00:00 RYAN: PAM PAM PAAAAAAMEEEEELAAAAA. Big news. Have you heard?!

PAM: Hi Ry Ry, what’s the news?!

RYAN: A bull was pulled over for riding in the front seat of a car. Coco went loco at the US Open. And someone made a hole in the Great Wall of China.

PAM: Oh my goodness, well,I’ve got a bunch you might not know…

RYAN: Alright, then we gotta start the show.

01:01 PAM: I’m Pamela Kirkland.

RYAN: and I’m Ryan Willard. It’s Tuesday, September 12th.

PAMELA: This is the Ten News and here are Ten Things You Need to Know!

01:39 RYAN: This week’s Word of the Week is COVID It is still with us and There has been a late Summer Covid surge in the US; First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden tested positive last week. Hospitalizations have increased 31% in the last two weeks, federal data shows, though that’s far below their pandemic-era peak. Dr. Biden is doing well and we wish her a speedy recovery!

PAM: Here at The Ten News we love sharing, especially when we get to share some of the top headlines around the world with you! But, that’s not the case for our second story today. A koala in Australia has been caught red-handed eating nearly $4,000 worth of plants! Claude, the koala, named for his sharp claws has been munching on eucalyptus seedlings that are actually meant for farmers & landcare groups building koala habitats.

RYAN: Speaking of building, did you know that it took over 2,300 years to build the Great Wall of China? And, only a measly portion of that time for two people to damage it? Two construction workers widened an existing hole in the wall as a shortcut to get their excavator to their worksite. They were detained for causing irreversible damage to the Great Wall of China and the case is still under investigation.

PAM: Those construction workers aren’t the only ones making a breakthrough. Scientists believe they have found a link between human-related climate change and polar bear survival. You see, Polar bears depend on ice sheets to access their main prey, and when ice melts polar bears are forced onto land where they’re deprived of food. Researchers from Polar Bears International, the University of Washington and the University of Wyoming found that the number of days polar bears went without food increased alongside greenhouse gas emissions. Checkout our show notes for resources on how you can help the polar bears!

RYAN: Sports fans may have had issues finding their favorite games this past week. For Spectrum users, a big cable provider in the U.S., the Disney-owned channels, like ESPN & Disney Channel, went dark after Charter Communications and Disney failed to reach a new agreement in their contract. This leaves about 15 million people without their favorite channels, sports, and shows.

RYAN: A rare and powerful earthquake shook Morocco last week. The 6.8 magnitude was the biggest quake the North African country has experienced in 120 years. Because earthquakes are so rare in that region, many buildings were not constructed to cope with the natural disaster. Rescue efforts are still underway, but more than 1000 people have died from the event. Our thoughts are with the people of Morocco and we hope for a safe recovery effort. We’ll be right back with a new tennis great and Queen B after this message for the grownups!

05:59 RYAN: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Coco went LOCO.  Coco Gauff has popped off at the US Open and won her first Grand Slam singles Title. Gauff defeated no. 2 seed, and top ranked WTA player, Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling final. Coco Gauff rose to fame in 2019 when she was 15 years old and four years later, she is the 11th teenager to ever win a Grand Slam Singles title. Let’s go Coco!

PAM: And in the tech world, there’s a new tracking device that could have a major impact on children with Autism! The eye-tracking technology could allow early-diagnosis and intervention in children between 16 and 30 months old and provides automated measures of children’s looking behavior that can help spot signs of Autism. According to Warren Jones, director of research at the Marcus Autism Center and a chair in autism at Emory University School of Medicine, this can help speed the time of diagnosis and the start of treatment plans which has shown better outcomes for children.

RYAN: Now, looking at the situation in Ukraine. On September 6th, Ukraine experienced their most fatal attack in months after a Russian missile crashed into a market. The explosion claimed the lives of 17 people and injured 32. The attack happened at the same time as a visit from the U.S. Secretary Antony Blinken as a gesture of support to Ukraine. Before we head to our next story, we want to send well wishes to the people of Ukraine. And, If you’re looking for ways to support Ukraine as the war continues, checkout our show notes for additional resources.

PAM: Alright, Ten’ers, for this next headline I want you to imagine your favorite birthday party you’ve ever had and multiply it by a gazillion. Because that’s probably what Beyonce’s 42nd birthday was like last week! Queen B was joined on stage by the legendary Diana Ross at her ‘Renaissance World Tour’ concert in LA. Ross surprised the crowd when she stepped on stage and sang a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ to Beyonce.

RYAN: For our last headline of today’s show, you might call bull hockey but I can promise you that it’s true. We’ve all heard of bull riding, but have you ever heard of a bull riding shotgun? Howdy Doody, a Watusi bull, and its owner were pulled over on a main highway in Nebraska after a 911 call was made about a bull riding in the passenger seat of a sedan. The car has been rebuilt so that there is no roof and a yellow cattle gate serves as the passenger side door giving Howdy Doody plenty of legroom.

RYAN: That was 10 things you need to know!

PAM: Check out Thursday’s episode where we’ll celebrate Rosh Hashanah and the Harvest Moon. I’m Pamela Kirkland,

08:02 RYAN: And I’m Ryan Willard. Thanks for listening to The Ten News.
