TRANSCRIPT:

00:00 RYAN: Hey Mom, yeah, I brought my lunch, thanks. But I’m looking at it now and don’t see any breakfast. You didn’t pack me any breakfast delights!

PAM: Happy Back to School Day, Ryan!

RYAN: Whoa! I thought school started next week. Or last month. Wait. When does school actually start?! AM I LATE FOR CLASS?!

PAM: You’re not in school anymore, so calm down… If you want to know, we gotta start the show.

RYAN: As you wish. I’m Ryan Willard.

PAM: And I’m Pamela Kirkland. It’s Thursday, September 7th.

1:59 RYAN: This is the Ten News. HAPPY BACK TO SCHOOL! I can’t believe it’s finally back to school again.

PAM: Actually, Ryan, back to school started last month.

RYAN: Wait, I thought school started after Labor Day? You know, the holiday that falls on the first Monday in September.

PAM: It does. But some schools start before Labor Day…

RYAN: I’m confused. I thought all school started at the same time?

PAM: Kids in the US actually go back to school at different times, back to school has been every week since the start of August!

RYAN: Really? Schools don’t all start at the same time?

PAM: It all depends on the state. More than two-thirds of students in Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee went back to school the week of August 7th. And about 94% of students in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas went back to school between August 7th and August 18th. And if you are in New England, you just got back to the books last week and Tuesday was the start day for most students in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

RYAN: So some students have been in school for a month already while others are just getting started?

PAM: Exactly, but it will all work out at the end of the year when schools let out.

RYAN: That’s a long time to wait! Time to play football!! Labor Day was Monday, September 4th and it’s pretty much the ‘unofficial NFL season kickoff.’ The NFL plays their first game on the Thursday after Labor Day, 99% of the time. Today, Sept 7th, the Detroit Lions will play against the defending Superbowl Champions, the Kansas City Chiefs. Let’s GOOO!

PAM: Ha, yes Ryan. Time to get your jersey out and favorite snacks ready. But Labor Day is also a day to celebrate the achievements and efforts of the 155 Million Americans in the workforce. The holiday was first celebrated in New York City on September 5th, 1882. It then became a national holiday when President Grover Cleveland signed a law in 1894 making it the first Monday of September each year.

RYAN: Got my snacks, my drinks, and I’m ready to say thank you to everyone in the US workforce. I’m personally hoping that the writers and actors strike ends fairly soon and with a good outcome for everyone.

RYAN: Did you know that the very first Waffle House opened to the public on Labor Day in 1955? Waffle House started in Avondale Estates, Georgia and is one of my favorite places to eat! So much so that when I get a dog, I want to name him Mr. Waffles. If I say waffles one more time, I’m going to need to get some waffles. Ahhh! I just said it. BRB!

7:04 RYAN: Sup Everett, want a pecan waffle?

EVERETT: Obviously. Ry, do you want to make a donation? I’ve been to Maui and loved it and I want to help.

RYAN: Of course I do! I was in Maui a year ago and actually in Lahaina! I played at the 808 Ping Pong Club and met a bunch of locals, they were some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Do you want to give us an update on what’s happening with Maui?

EVERETT: Bet. On August 8th, 2023, Lahaina Maui experienced the deadliest US wildfires in more than a century. It was the worst natural disaster in Hawaii since it became a state. The fire is believed to have started because of a severe drought and a strong storm and impacted at least 2,710 acres of land, and destroyed at least 2,700 structures. As of right now, the Lahaina fires are 100% contained. The Kula fire is 95% contained and the Olinda fire is 90% contained. President Biden and the federal government put together a plan of action to help. He pledged $95 million dollars to help rebuild Maui’s infrastructure. They also approved more than $16 million in assistance to 4,200 affected households and sent over 1,000 federal personnel to assist the residents. You can see the full list of what they did, if you click the link in our show notes. Also, celebrities like Jason Momoa have been very active in helping the people of Maui. Dwayne Johnson and Oprah Winfrey set up the People’s Fund of Maui which gives financial assistance directly to the residents of the affected communities.

EVERETT: Ry, doesn’t our production director, Jeremiah live in Maui?

RYAN: Yeah he does! Let’s send him a voice note.

EVERETT: Hey Jeremiah, it’s Everett and Ryan. Can you tell us what it’s like in Maui right now and how the people are doing? Should tourists be coming to Maui? Is there anything we can do to help?

RYAN: WE GOT THREE DOTS. He’s sending something back!

[JEREMIAH VOICE NOTE]

EVERETT: Thanks Jeremiah, you rock.

RYAN: And thank YOU Everett for that Maui update. Ten’ers, check out the links in our show notes if you want to help! 10 Seconds of Facts about… Hawaii
