It's the winter holiday season. Hanukkah begins on December 18th. Christmas is celebrated on December 25th. And Kwanzaa begins December 26th. One thing many kids look forward to this time of year is gifts. Ryan, are you wrapping something?

I'm not wrapping holiday gifts for you or the Ten News Team. Nope.

You might want to use something other than wrapping paper. It's actually not great for the environment.

You think you have what it takes to work here? Time for your first-day pop quiz. Corinne? Question one. What's the most educated country in the world? Question two. What does a bird fart smell like? Question three. Who's the best video game player on the Ten News team?

Well, first off, Canada is the most educated country in the world. More than half of its residents have college degrees. And the second question was actually a trick question. Birds don't fart. And lastly, um, Ryan is the best gamer on the Ten News team.

Told you, Corinne, what are you saying about holiday waste?

Well, the holiday season is upon us. Not only is it the busiest time of the year, but it's also one of the most wasteful. I love wrapping up gifts but feel a little guilty when I see the piles of leftover paper. I need someone who knows even more than I do about waste and recycling. I wonder if my friend Ryan could help me out.

No, no, I've got a cooler and smarter, Ryan. I'm gonna call Ryan Hickman from Ryan's recycling. He was selected by MSN in their top 15 Kids Changing the World for his extensive passion for recycling bottles and cans. Ryan. Hi, it's Corinne from the Ten News. You're passionate about the environment, right?

Yes, I am passionate about the environment. I have a recycling company Ryan's Recycling based in Southern California, Orange County. I go to my customer’s houses that call for a pickup, pickup from them and take it to the recycle center. I sort it out there, and I give the recycling to them to recycle properly.

Remind me, how did you get into it? And what about it makes it so much fun for you?

Ryan Hickman 3:18

I started when I was three and a half my dad took me to the local recycling center for the first time. I loved it so much. I wanted to keep doing it. It was fun and I saw it was helping the planet.

That is so cool. I knew I came to the right person. Okay, I want to learn about how I can be more eco-friendly this holiday season. So, it's time to play Fact or Fiction. Recycling doesn't actually work.

Ryan Hickman 3:54

Fiction, imagine you're drinking a soda out of a soda can and you throw that in the trash. That's one more item in the landfill taking up more space, harming the planet more. If you're recycling, like I've said 1.7 million cans and bottles. Just imagine that not in our landfills and oceans. Think of all the animals I'm saving. So it does actually help.

Corinne Catibayan 4:15

Your report says more than 50% of global industrial emissions can be traced to just 25 companies. This means that big corporations hold the key to climate change. So, there's basically nothing we can do about it.

Ryan Hickman 4:28

Fact & fiction. Corporations do create the most waste, but we can make a difference to just try telling them like hey, recycle. Instead of having coke like, pump out a bunch of new plastic bottles, give them old ones to reuse, rinse them out, make new bottles out of those bottles make even new things out of those bottles, big companies could do it too, you and me, the big companies, doesn't matter.

Corinne Catibayan 4:51

I don't need to care about recycling. Someone else will separate it for me anyway.

Ryan Hickman 4:55

Fiction. No one will separate it if you throw it in the trash. Just go straight to the landfill. So again, like with all your bottles and cans and cardboard and stuff and you go straight into your garbage can, it won't get recycled, that's even worse for the planet.

The holiday season is the most fun time of the year so it can't harm the environment

Ryan Hickman 5:14

Fact, it is the most fun time of the year. But fiction, can harm the planet. With all of the wrapping paper and stuff, some of it's not recyclable, styrofoam, things like that, that could harm the planet.

Corinne Catibayan 5:27

Papers recyclable. So, wrapping paper is obviously recyclable, too.

Ryan Hickman 5:32

Fiction. It depends on like the foil type of paper with like old sparkles and glitters and stuff that cannot be recycled, printed wrapping paper. Yes, but it's low-grade paper, so it makes it hard to recycle. The third type of paper is a craft or plain paper, which is the best alternative because it can be recycled, and it's even compostable. How cool is that?

Giving gifts is also one of my favorite things to do. Some of the most eco-friendly gifts are homemade beauty products, reusable shopping bags, and food.

Ryan Hickman 6:02

Fact. Because all that people use, it could biodegrade too, if like if it gets worn out like the food too, you eat it, you could compost it, and it's not generating new stuff.

Real Christmas trees are better for the environment than fake trees

Ryan Hickman 6:16

Fact. The most eco-friendly choice between the two. Buy a real Christmas tree sprayed with little to no pesticides. And make sure to compost or recycle it at the end of its life. If you must buy a fake tree, make sure you commit to using it for like 10 to 20 years for it to even come close to being like an eco-friendly tree.

Ryan, can you share with me one more time what you do and why you do it? How did you start again?

Ryan Hickman 6:42

My name is Ryan Hickman. I'm 13 years old. I like to recycle. And I started when I was three and a half. My dad took me to the local recycling center for the first time. I loved it so much, so I wanted to keep doing it, it's just fun, and I saw it was helping the planet.

No comment. But I will say Tessa's voice in the game bumped it up to my top 10 games of the year.

Speaking of I need your help. I want to talk about the coolest and best games and movies that came out this year. Everett 7:58 Now that is worth pausing for.

All right, we're gonna give some Ten News awards out to our favorite movies and games that came out in 2022. Let's start with movies. The movie is most likely to need a box of tissues for: Black Panther Wakanda Forever. I cried in the first two minutes of this movie. I was a big Chadwick Boseman fan and was so sad when he passed away. And this movie not only honored him but took the Black Panther legacy to another level. The story was great. The action was insane and the introduction of the mourn his people was so cool. And then the mid-credit scene also made me cry. So bring your tissues, Ten'ers.

Best soundtrack to get stuck inside your head: Ecanto. Look, we don't talk about Bruno. I know. But we have to because that song lives in my head rent-free. At first, I wasn't sure if it was my kind of movie. But it's a movie about a family with magical gifts. So there's definitely a character you'll relate to. And the music from Lin Manuel Miranda made the story come alive in a whole different way. And I can't stop soon. And that soundtrack a year later.

The movie most likely to make you want to fly: Top Gun Maverick. I'm a big fan of the original Top Gun and I'm usually very skeptical when it comes to sequels. But this movie exceeded all my expectations. First off, there were no green screens or CGI. So everything you're seeing in the movie they actually did, which is wild since they're flying fighter jets. Tom Cruise was awesome as Maverick but Miles Teller playing rooster really stole the show and made me excited for the next film that's already in the works.

Best boy band featured in a film: Turning Red. Turning Red was awesome for multiple reasons. Mei Lin was Pixar, his first Asian American main character, and she poofs into an adorable red panda whenever she gets excited, which is like, all the time, and the boyband in the film Four Town had such cool music that I thought it was real group. Turns out it isn't. But you can still hear them on the soundtrack which meant from on a poof into a big red panda.

The best video game adaptation: Sonic 2. Okay, this is a big deal because video game movies aren't always great, but Sonic two was somehow better than the first one. Ben Schwartz is Sonic and Jim Carrey is Dr. Robotnik is a winning duo. But when you add in Clara O'Shaughnessy is tails and Aegis Elbaz knuckles. It gets bonkers, and it was a faithful adaptation of the game with Easter eggs all over the place. As a gamer and a film lover. This gets too enthusiastic thumbs up. Everett 10:58 Okay, now it's on to my favorite video games. Ryan Willard 11:02 Let's go.

Best game that combines a bunch of things we absolutely love LEGO Star Wars the Skywalker Saga. LEGO, Star Wars, and with friends and family? Yes, please. LEGO Star Wars the Skywalker Saga features all three trilogies, so there's plenty of gameplay to get through and a ton of easter eggs to find. But if you play co-op, it makes it way easier. And I really love the way it tells the stories of each trilogy. It's like watching the movies, but I get to play through them.

The most realistic and weird game that I never thought I'd like but love: Stray. I never thought I'd have so much fun playing as a cat in a futuristic world. I thought I'd be doing crazy super moves with the cat but you're just a normal cat trying to get home. The story that unfolds is pretty bonkers. But when it comes down to it, you're just a brave little kitty trying to get back to his litter. Stray is adorable, exciting, and really fun.

Biggest game changer. Pokemon Legends Arceus. Pokemon Legends Arceus has completely changed the way Pokemon games are played. Arceus, is an open-world game that is less about battling other trainers and more about catching and learning about Pokemon. You get to explore vast landscapes and catch pokemon until you get to battle the powerful noble Pokemon. Don't get me wrong. I love Pokemon Scarlet and violet. But Pokemon Legends Arceus really hit different.

The best game to play with your family that lets you do things you can't actually do with your family: Splatoon 3. My mothers still against me and my siblings having paint fights in the house. So instead, we splatoon. Splatoon 3 improves upon the last two versions and has new weapon classes moves multiplayer boards, abilities, and gear modifications. And it's a lot easier to play with your friends now. Splatoon just launched its inaugural big run event so there are plenty of opportunities to co-op with your friends and family.

Best game that helps me be really good at sports. I might not actually be good at Nintendo Switch Sports. Nintendo Switch Sports is a follow-up to the best-selling Nintendo game of all time. Wii Sports. You can play with your family or friends and play a wide variety of sports including golf, soccer, volleyball, bowling, tennis, badminton, and Jumbo. Jumbo was my favorite, which was basically sword fighting, which is also something I grew up for when we do maybe next year.

Nintendo Switch sports is also the only game that Tracy Kaplan can beat her kids Naomi and Owen at how do I know this? She brings it up every single chance she gets. Everett 13:58 Dude, when I played Kap on the soccer game, she showed up with a leg attachment. Kap was kicking like a Rockette. She's outta control.

That is one of the many reasons I call Kap the boss. And my honorable mention is the most anticipated game that still hasn't come out yet, but hopefully will in 2023 The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The sequel, The Breath of the Wild is set to come out in 2023 and I will be crying on the inside until I'm playing it. I really want to play.

I mean, honorable mention is the best game that's not new, but I'm still obsessed with: Minecraft. I'm still obsessed with Minecraft, obviously. But one actress was way ahead of everyone else. Mabel Cadena, who plays Namora, can hold her breath for an astounding amount of time - do you know how long? Is it: 3 ½ minutes? 6 ½ minutes? or 9 ½ minutes? Ten’ers, did you guess it? Corinne, what’s your answer?
