Ryan Willard  0:01

Alright, Pete. Do you have the button ready?

Pete Musto  0:03

Yeah, we're good to go.

Ryan Willard  0:05

Hey, Ten'ers, Ryan Willard here and I came in early to let you know that your host Bethany Van Delft is suffering from a mild fart attack. The constant and uncontrollable farting began today after.

Bethany Van Delft  0:16

Hey, Pete. Hey, Ryan. Wait, why are you early? And why are you sitting in my chair? Bethany, that smells like hot garbage. Oh, wait, what? What is going on?

Ryan Willard  0:30

Oh, good gravy. Bethany. That smell is making my teeth hurt.

Pete Musto  0:34

Bethany, your farts are making my beard fall off.

Bethany Van Delft  0:37

Well, Ten'ers you know what they say? He who smelt it, dealt it. Also, he would the cool fart box. Can I borrow that? I'm going to see my dad later, he would get a kick out of that.

Ryan Willard  0:50

We wish you well in your battle against this epic fart attack. I am not Bethany Van Delft. It's Friday, April Fool's Day and this is the Eleven News.

I'll give it to you. That was a good one. I probably should have checked the date on the calendar before I left the house. April Fool's Day is a fun day full of pranks and jokes. But when did it start? Some historians have compared it to the hilarious festival in ancient Rome and holy in India, both of which happens in early spring. But modern April Fool's Day might be linked to a big change in the French calendar in the 1500s when New Year's Day moved from Easter to January 1st when we celebrate it now. Anyone who still celebrated the new year in April was considered a “poisson d’avril aka an April fish. Why? It seems like being a fish to them was being a fool because if a French kid pins a fish to your back, they're pulling an April Fool's Day prank. Okay. In Scotland, April Fool's is called Goki day. A Goki is cuckoo bird. Even other historians have suggested that it's just a confusing time in the world of weather, meaning you might be made into a fool if he gets it'll be sunny, then get drenched with rain. But the truth is, no one is really sure why we celebrate April Fool's Day on April 1st. One thing's for sure whether you're full of fish or a cuckoo bird, it's highly likely someone will try to prank you on April Fool's Day. Just like Ryan and Pete.

Pete Musto  2:46

Hey Bethenny, I think the flux capacitor in your mic is broken. Can you go to the control room and fix it?

Bethany Van Delft  2:53

Sure. A Flux Capacitor isn't that from Back to the Future.

Ryan Willard  3:00

Back to Ryan actually, I've only got a few minutes before Bethany charges back in here. So, I thought I'd take a moment to tell our Ten'ers some of my favorite pranks you can pull on April Fool's Day. Well, you can pull them any day really, but it's extra fun on April Fool's. First up the Phantom controller.

Bethany Van Delft  3:22

Hey, Pete, I want to play Mario Kart. Yeah, sure.

Pete Musto  3:26

Oh my gosh. Whoa. I've never done this. Well, whoa. Ryan, this is my personal record. Wait, where are you going? Left? No, no, no. Oh, what happened? Pete the controller just started acting crazy. And Luigi just fell off Rainbow Road.

Ryan Willard  3:46

Here's what really happens. I gave Pete the second controller and I played with the first controller. I let him think he was doing all of the things but I hid my controller under a blanket so he couldn't see it. And I was actually controlling everything. This prank works very well on grownups who aren't very good at video games. This one is called the lamp spider. Hey, Tessa, would you turn that lamp on for me? Of course right. There's a giant spider in the lab. All you need to pull this off is a pencil some black or dark construction paper, some scissors and some tape. Draw or trace a giant spider. Cut it out and then tape it on the inside of a lampshade and when someone turns the lamp on Alright, last but not least, is the sloppy sneeze. Ooh, Pete that sandwich looks delicious.

Pete Musto  4:46

You don't you just sneezed all over me. It's so wet.

Ryan Willard  4:53

I don't even get a bless you. Pause. Here's what happened. This one's pretty simple. Actually. I walked up behind Pete with wet fingers, I pretended to sneeze and flick the water off my fingers and onto his neck. Feels like a real sneeze and is totally McNasty, but it works like a charm. I hope these pranks helped and that you have an awesome April Fool's Day.

Bethany Van Delft  5:20

I knew it, Ryan Get out of my chair. Okay, Ten'ers, I'm back. Did you know that 90% of Rubik's Cubes are left-handed editions? No way. April Fools. Could you please.? What's that over there? I think it's a...

Various Voices  5:39

What, what, what's the big idea?

Bethany Van Delft  5:43

Trivia on the Ten. One common prank on April Fools is to be sent on a fool's errand. Someone, probably a grown up will send kids to get or do something that isn't actually possible. Do you know the other name for fool's errand? Is it a) a wild duck chase? b) a wild boar chase or c) a wild goose chase? Did you guess it? The answer is c. A wild goose chase is when you're sent to look for something that doesn't exist. Kind of like when Pete told me to fix the flux capacitor. The first mention of a wild goose chase is from the diary of a kid from Boston named Anna which she wrote in 1771. Well, just 10 more minutes ago on our show. Kidding, that's it for today. But before we go, here's a quick note for the grownups. Thanks for listening to the Ten News. Look out for our new episodes on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and extras on Saturdays.
