Hi Ryan, we still have a show to do.
Ryan Willard 0:11
We just did the show, right?
Bethany Van Delft 0:12
But, we're doing two shows today because it's Tuesday, February 22nd. In 2022 tu tu tu tu tu tu tu tu. I'm Bethany Van Delft and this is the Ten News.

In honor of this doubles day in the Olympics, the Ten News team is putting the spotlight on our favorite figure skating and ice dancing pairs. The ice dancing skills of Team USA Zachary Donahue and Madison Hubbell are ahh-mazing to watch.

Reaching out for every step, covering so much, and maintaining great speed.

They've been competing together for more than a decade and the athletes are best friends on and off the ice. Team USA figure skating pair Evan Bates and Madison Chuck are setting records. Brilliant performance from Chuck and Bates, it had such a claim. Evan is the only figure skating athlete to compete in four Olympic Games. That's right. He skated in the 2010 Olympics before you were born. Another record-breaking team is Gabriela Papadakis and Guillaume Caesarone.

These team France ice dancers set a world record for the highest first stage score ever. And another world record for you. Team China's Sui Wenjing in Hong Kong, teamed up at 27 and just set the record for the highest score in short program quality. A lot of the pressure was on the short programs only two minutes and 40 seconds. The free skate is longer. And finally, team Japan ice dancing pair, Tim Kaleido and Misato Kumatsubara are actually married. And they get to spend Valentine's Day together at the Olympic Village. Well, the Olympics are wrapping up, there have been some amazing feats and a bit of controversy. Here's Ten News sports correspondent Kenny Curtis with the recap.

Well, folks, the day is finally here. After two weeks of nonstop competition. The 2022 Winter Olympics are officially over, man. But before you get too sad, let's talk about some of the sheer amazingness that occurred over the past two weeks, we saw some of the world's greatest athletes competing at the highest possible level. It was entertaining and thrilling and heartwarming. All the things we have come to love about the Olympics. And there was also a good amount of drama. Yep, we have a lot to unpack here, especially with the controversy surrounding Russian figure skater Camilla Valliava. Now Valliava helped Russia win the team figure skating event, but was later suspended from competing when it was revealed that she had previously tested positive for a banned substance. What does that mean? That means drugs that would give her an unfair advantage in competition. That's unbelievable. After an investigation, Valliava was ultimately allowed to compete again but didn't manage to earn any additional metals even though she was favored to win gold in the individual competition. And if that wasn't dramatic enough, there was also a normal level of competition between world-class athletes. The rivalries in the Olympics are legendary, and this year was no exception. Here are some of the best rivalries that came up during the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Let's do this. On your marks, get set.

First up is the U.S. versus Canada women's ice hockey face-off. When it comes to the Winter Olympics, there is no greater rivalry than the US and Canada's women's ice hockey teams. The two teams have competed against each other in the gold medal match for almost 20 years. Wow. Since this sport was introduced in 1998, they are the only teams ever to win the gold. Before this year, Canada had won three gold medals while the US had won two. Team the USA came into Beijing as the defending champ after beating Canada in 2018. But, they weren't to hold on to their title. Canada defeated the US in the gold medal match 3-2. It was a hard-fought game featuring two incredibly talented teams and although Canada may have won this round, the rivalry is certainly not going anywhere anytime soon. There's also the snowboarding rivalry between Shaun White and Hirano. American snowboarder Shaun White faced a rivalry of his own this year except while he was up against an entirely new generation of snowboarders White has dominated this sport for two decades, but has struggled in recent years. He faced similar issues in this year's Olympic Games and ended up not winning a medal at all. Still, White's final performance was met with cheers from everyone in the crowd, including judges and opponents. One of White's biggest rivals, Japan's Ayumu Hirano took home the gold and at 23 years old Hirano represents the future of snowboarding. A couple of other emerging stars Australia Scotty James and Switzerland's Dion Sharer went home with silver and bronze medals respectively. And although White's rivalry with his younger opponents has been fierce, he made sure to congratulate all of the winners. There was an iconic moment when white hugged Hirano at the end of the competition, and to many, this signified the ending of one snowboarding era and the beginning of another. And then there's the figure skating rivalry between America Nathan Chen, and Yazoo Hiniu you and Shumu Onouno from Japan. Chen had a lot to prove coming into this year's competitions. He was one of America's most promising figure skaters competing in the 2018 Olympics, but after an unfortunate fall, he didn't win any medals. Chen was determined to mount a comeback at this year's Olympics, but he knew the road wouldn't be easy. 2018 Gold Medalist Yazoo Futuna U of Japan had trained tirelessly to defend his title and become the first skater to win three consecutive gold medals. And Shoma Uno also from Japan was just as determined not to let Chen come out ahead, but Chen was prepared to do whatever it took to win. After a nearly flawless routine. He received the highest score in history for the men's short program and won the gold medal by a 22 point margin ready to go. Chen, a 22-year-old Yale student is now the first American figure skating champion since 2010. So as you can see, there's no shortage of rivalries and drama when it comes to the Olympic Games. The 2022 Beijing Olympics were filled with all the excitement and drama we've come to expect from the world's biggest international sporting event. And hey, there's only about 2920 days until the next Winter Olympics, but who's counting?
Bethany Van Delft 7:57
Thanks, Kenny. It's been an awesome Olympic Games and I'm already daydreaming about the next one. On February 22nd in 1980, the US Men's Olympic hockey team beat the Soviet Union team. People were so surprised the underdog US team won that since then it's been called the Miracle on Ice.
Ryan Willard 8:25
Awesome, alright Ten'ers, Ryan here with the rundown. North Korea's internet might have been taken down by a single hacker. Last January North Korea's internet was observed to be down with reports suggesting quote "an attack against North Korean servers took the entire country off the internet." And in an interview with Wired magazine, a single hacker named p4x claims to be behind it. Wired Magazine says they've seen the evidence to back up p4x's claims. The western half of the United States is experiencing its worst drought in 1200 years. A study in the journal Nature Climate Change utilizes data from rings and trees and preserved wood beams. The 22-year long drought is the worst dry spell since 800 AD. That's when the Vikings and Mayans were around. So if you're on the west side of the US talk with your grownups about watching your water usage. Scientists built a robotic fish and it's powered by human heart cells. Scientists at Harvard University engineered a biohybrid fish using paper, plastic, gelatin, and two strips of living heart muscle cells. The contractions from the heart muscle cells make the fishtail sway from side to side allowing it to swim. Crazy, right? But I'm Ryan, and that's your rundown. Back to you, Bethany.
Bethany Van Delft 9:58
Lucky you, it's...

What, what, what's the big idea?

Trivia on the Ten. We've got a tricky little space question for you today. How many stars are in a binary star system? Here's a hint. Think about the number in today's date. Is it a) one, b) two, or c) 200? Did you guess it? The answer is B. A binary star system has two stars at the center of the solar system. There would be like Earth having two suns instead of one. Come on. You may remember a famous planet in the Star Wars universe. That's part of a binary star system. That's right. Do you have any trivia you would like to share with us? Visit thetennews.com/contact and share what you've got. We might feature the trivia or you on the show. We hope you enjoyed your 2/22/22. I think it's finally time to go tobogganing.
