Why didn't the dog want to play football? Because it was a boxer. Aha. I'm Bethany Van Delft, it's Saturday, February 12th and this is no ordinary episode of the Ten News. This is the Ten News Gets Extra.

Is your family making seven-layer dip and stocking up on chips to get ready for the big game? The Super Bowl is Sunday, February 13th and while there are no actual bowls involved, other than snack bowls, it's one of the biggest days in American sports. Ten News correspondent Kenny Curtis is here with some surprising facts about the Super Bowl.

Are you ready for some football? Yes! This weekend is one of the biggest sporting events of the year, Super Bowl Sunday. So without further ado, here are 10 fun and slightly random facts about the Super Bowl to get you ready for the big game. Number one, the first Super Bowl was played on January 15th, 1967, and featured the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers. Since not much was known about the event they only played in front of 61,000 fans and the average ticket price was $12. Not too shabby considering the prices for this year's game average between $4,000 and $10,000 each. Number two, the Green Bay Packers are the first-ever Super Bowl champions. They went on to beat the Chiefs and win the first Super Bowl game from 35 to 10. And in case that wasn't enough, they also won the second Super Bowl against the Oakland Raiders. Number three, the winning trophy is named after the Packers head coach Vince Lombardi. I guess if you lead a team to victory and back-to-back Super Bowls, it only makes sense to get a trophy named after you.

Everybody has to work as a team. The more you run, the more the heart knows you are.

Number four, Super Bowl Sunday is the second-largest day for food consumption in the United States. The only day ahead of it is Thanksgiving. In 2020, the National Chicken Council projected that Americans would eat more than 1 billion chicken wings over the Superbowl weekend. So, while the Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events of the year, it's also pretty great for eating. I guess that explains why it's one of my favorite days of the year. Number five, the NFL doesn't pay artists to perform in the halftime show. Crazy right? But, for most performers just getting in front of such a large audience is payment enough. halftime shows are often more popular than the game itself. Musical icons like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, and Beyonce have all performed during the halftime show. Number six, not every NFL team has made it to the Super Bowl. Since there have been 55 soon-to-be 56 Super Bowl games played, you might think that all 32 NFL teams have managed to win the big kahuna, but that is not the case. There are 12 teams that have never won the Super Bowl, the Browns, the Bills, the Chargers, the Bengals, the Cardinals, the Falcons, the Lions, the Jaguars, the Panthers, the Texans, the Titans, and the Vikings. And of that list, four teams, the Browns, Jaguars, Lions, and Texans haven't even made it to the game at all. It's true what they say, getting to the Super Bowl isn't easy. Blue-22-hike! Number seven, two teams are tied for the most Super Bowl victories. The New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers. They've both won six Super Bowls. The Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49-ers are right behind them with five apiece. Wow. Number eight, companies pay millions of dollars to advertise during the Superbowl. Another great part about Super Bowl Sunday is the commercials. Sometimes they're more exciting than the actual game itself. And they should be because they cost an arm and a leg to make. In 2020, companies paid approximately $5 million for a 30-second spot. Show me the money. But, I guess it's a good business investment since millions of people watch the Superbowl every year. The most-watched Superbowl of all time was in 2015 it had 114.4 million viewers, now that's a lot of eyeballs. Number nine, the roman numerals are used to avoid confusion. You might have noticed that the Superbowl uses roman numerals as a way to refer to each year's big game. This is because the NFL officials didn't want to refer to the Super Bowl by year since the game is played in the year after the corresponding football season. I'm not sure why they didn't just use regular numbers but you got to admit the roman numeral thing definitely ups the cool factor. And number 10, a one-of-a-kind customized coin is used for the coin toss at the start of the Superbowl. It's inscribed with pictures of the helmet of the two teams, as well as the Lombardi trophy. Replicas of the coin are actually sold after the game in case you want to build up their collection. So, don't forget to tune into this year's Super Bowl on Sunday, February 13th when the Cincinnati Bengals take on the Los Angeles Rams. The Bengals have never won a Super Bowl, as we said, and the Rams have the unique opportunity of playing in their home stadium for the big game. Find a good spot in front of the TV and see who becomes this year's Superbowl champion.

Thanks, Kenny. I'm rooting for the commercials. I'm a commercial person. The Superbowl is an epic day in American sports. But there's one athletic competition that's even more glorious than the Super Bowl. And that's the Puppy Bowl. The 18th annual Puppy Bowl will be on Animal Planet Sunday, February 13th right before the Super Bowl. Team Ruff and Team Fluff will display their athletic puppy prowess by chasing balls up and down the field. Encouraged by their coaches, Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart. It sounds like must-see TV to me. Do you know what the best part of the puppy bowl is? You got it when the puppies get distracted. Expect some ear nibbles, tail-chasing impromptu snoozes, and extreme cuteness. In the Super Bowl, teams compete in playoffs to make it to the big game. I bet you're wondering how puppies make it to the Puppy Bowl. Well, all the puppies are adoptable shelter pups looking for their fur-ever homes. People highlight the awesome animal shelters in rescue organizations that help pets across the country. You can see the full pup lineup by visiting the link in the show notes.

Trivia on the Ten. Super Bowl Sunday is the second biggest eating day in the United States right behind Thanksgiving. But which particular food do Americans eat 8 million pounds of on Super Bowl Sunday? Is it a) hamburgers b) guacamole or c) cake? Did you guess it? The answer is b. Guacamole only is a huge hit with Super Bowl snackers and 15,000 tons of chips go along with all that avocado goodness. Got a favorite Super Bowl snack to share? Mine are pigs in a blanket.
