TRANSCRIPT:
RYAN: Whatâs up Chaddy Chaddy Chaaaadimus?
CHAD: (Sings a line from a song or show tune)
RYAN: Pamela what is happening
PAM: Ryan, itâs âBring your favorite beats day,â you made up this holiday and put it on everyoneâs calendarâ
CHAD: âand said anyone who didnât bring their favorite beats would get hit with a water balloon.
RYAN: Ohhhh, I think I spelled beats wrong, I meant the vegetable, beets.
PAM: Yeah, no one brought those kinds of beets.
CHAD: What beats are you sharing today, Ryan?
RYAN: Iâve got beats that yâall probably have never heard of.
PAM: Oooooh really? Who is it?
RYAN: Itâs ummmmmâŠ
CHAD: Is it AJR? Or Imagine Dragons?
PAM: OrâŠ
RYAN: NopeâŠitâs umm, ummmmâŠ. time to start the show! Iâm Ryan Willard.
PAM: And Iâm Pamela Kirkland. Itâs Thursday, October 19th.
RYAN: This is the Ten News.
RYAN: Ryan needs banana bread, where is my banana bread?
NIAH: Hey Ry!
NAOMI: Happy Bring Your Own Beats Day!
RYAN: Hey Naomi, whatup Niah! I didnât know you were coming in today. Great to see you. Whatâre you listening to?
NIAH: Weâre listening to the Eras tour setlist, obv.
NAOMI: Weâre going to see the movie soon.
RYAN: What is the Eras tour?
NAOMI and NIAH: you havenât heard?
NIAH: Itâs Taylor Swiftâs world tour!
RYAN: But sheâs toured before, why is this a big deal?
NAOMI: A lot of reasonsâŠ
NIAH: Allow us to explain!
NAOMI: Since March of 2023, Taylor Swift has been traveling around the US and now the world, performing for 3 hours at each show!
NIAH: Itâs amazing. On October 13th, a movie version of the US tour released worldwide, just like after her first stadium tour in 2019.
RYAN: What happens at the show?
NIAH: she performs songs from 9 of her 10 albums and includes surprises that arenât part of the setlist
RYAN: So you donât know what youâre going to get?
NAOMI: No, but thatâs what makes the surprise songs fun! Sheâs starting to repeat songs too. The tour started in March, and itâs ending in November 2024!
RYAN: Is anything special happening for the movie?
NIAH: Yeah! Movie theaters have special branded popcorn buckets and 5 movies have changed their release dates so that they donât have to compete with the Eras movie.
NAOMI: And the movie had a huge opening weekend. It made $130 million worldwide and was one of the biggest opening weekends of the year for movie theaters. A giant deal for a concert film.
Ryan: Woah! So, why did it come out on the 13th? Is it a significant date?
Naomi: Common Swfitie knowledge is that 13 is Taylor Swiftâs favorite and luckiest number. She adds 13 to many of her major easter eggs and she was also born on the 13th.
Niah: Thatâs why the movie came out on the 13th of October. That date also happened to be Friday the 13th.
Naomi: Hey Niah, we gotta get going.
Ryan: Already?! Where are you going?
Niah: To buy our tickets!
Ryan: Ahhh can I come?!
Naomi: Too late, we already invited Pam.
RYAN: WHAT!
NIAH: Sorry Ryan. Maybe next time!
RYAN: Hmm, maybe I shouldnât have eaten all their popcorn the last time we went to the movies.
RYAN: Oh, I think this is a Tener calling, one sec while I grab this.
ELLA: My name is Ella, I'm seven years old, and I live, and I live in California. I'm a big Taylor Swift fan.
RYAN: Oh hey Ella, Did you see the movie? How was it.
ELLA: Yes, I did. I am so good. I got so excited when I first saw it, cause that was my first time that I have seen it. Taylor Swift. I dressed up as Miss Americana and my cousin Dean, he was the Heartbreak Prince.
RYAN: Do you have a favorite Taylor Swift song?
ELLA: Shake It Off. I love her songs, and my mom and my Nana Candace, they actually went to the concert, and that was the concert that was in the movie that we went to.
RYAN: Thatâs so cool Ella. I really need to go see this movie. But what Era should I dress as?
RYAN: Weâve got some big news about the National Football League. The newest star in the NFL is NOT one of the players⊠Taylor Swift was spotted at a Kansas City Chiefs game to support player Travis Kelce and has had an immense and immediate impact.
Taylor was first spotted at a Chiefs vs Bears game which drew in 24.3M viewers. The matchup also had a 63% viewership increase with women.
Travis Kelce jersey sales jumped 400% afterwards and became a top 5 selling jersey in the whole NFL. Kelce also gained more than 300K Instagram followers the next day and his podcast to No. 1 overall on Apple.
All of which makes me wonder, what would happen if Taylor Swift came on the Ten News? What would you want to ask Taylor Swift? Leave us a message at 877-TEN-NEWS
CORINNE: Ummm, Ry, why are you under my desk looking at Spotify?
RYAN: Hey Corinne! So ummm, weâre supposed to bring in new music today and I canât remember any new music I like. And someone might hit me with a water balloon.
CORINNE: Ooooh, well what genre are you going for?
RYAN: Iâm kinda lost, do you have any suggestions?
CORINNE: Well, Indigenous Peoplesâ Day was on October 9th, have you ever listened to any indigenous artists?
RYAN: Oh my gosh, I have actually!
CORINNE: Letâs do A Playlist Playoff!
RYAN: Alright, Iâm up first: Number 1: I like this hip hop artist named Supaman. Heâs a rapper and does fancy dance, which is a style of Native American dance. Supamanâs a member of the ApsĂĄalooke Nation and lives on the Crow reservation in Montana. I found him through this cool music video for âAlrightâ where he travels around in the Delorean from Back to the Future (one of my favorite movies). Check it out: Song clip from Alright
CORINNE: Supamanâs awesome! For Number 2: Raye Zaragoza has been on repeat for me. Sheâs a protest singer-songwriter whose lyrics speak about her experience being mixed-race because her mom emigrated from Japan and her dad is of Mexican and Indigenous descent. I love her songs, âfight like a girlâ, âstrong womanâ and âfight for youâ because it talks a lot about social justice, womenâs rights, and issues that Indigenous communities face today.
RYAN: Number 3: I also have been feeling Digging Roots. ShoShana Kish and Raven Kanetatka are an Anishinabe duo that blends Pow-Wow with Blues and Hip Hop. And theyâre awesome activists: they founded the Indigenous Music Summit, which is a safe and sacred space that nurtures indigenous talent and connects them with music industry professionals.
RYAN: Number 4: Ooooh, Iâm also digging J25! Jazelle Childs-Evans was the first Indigenous woman to be inducted into the Recording Academy, the organization behind the prestigious Grammy Awards. J25 represents the Chickasaw Nation and is determined to keep their stories and culture alive through music and songwriting.
CORINNE: And Number 5: Is Laura Niquay. Sheâs from the Indigenous community of Wemotaci, Canada and her Atikamekw identity is at the core of her music. Her lyrics, for me, are so meaningful and well thought of because she consults with linguistic experts and elders to make sure she sings properly in Atikamekw, her native language. She says one of her favorite songs to sing is âMoteskanoâ, which means âThe paths of our ancestorsâ. This song highlights the importance of the passing down of their culture and how it should never stop.
RYAN: Okay, that was an awesome Playlist Playoff. Thank you so much for your help Corinne!
CORINNE: Youâre welcome Ry, and ummm, good luck with that water balloon situation.
PAM: A big anniversary is coming up on October 23rd. The anniversary of the first Apple ipod. Youâve probably heard of an iPhone, but have you ever heard of the iPod? The iPod was a revolutionary music player from Apple that debuted on October 23rd, 2001. The first iPod had 5 gigabytes of storage and was able to hold about 1,000 songs, which was more than any other music player could hold at the time. Nowadays, the iPhone can do everything an iPod could do and has anywhere from 128 gigabytes to 1,000 gigabytes of storage. And if you have Apple or Spotify, you can stream an infinite amount of songs. A lot has changed since the iPodâs debut in 2001, what do you think our phones will look like in another 22 years?
NAOMI: Welcome to the Trivia Room!
OWEN: Hey, Naomi, that's my line. Tessa gave me the trivia throne.
NAOMI: Well, I got here first today. And, if you want the throne back, you're gonna have to answer some Taylor Swift trivia.
OWEN: Fine. Bring. It. On. Taylor Swift trivia? Maybe three different quick questions?
NAOMI: What was the only album without any co-writer?
OWEN: Um, well. Firstly, I know about three albums, so I'll just eeny, meeny, miny, moe it. Red.
NAOMI: Uh, incorrect. The answer is, speak now. What year was Taylor Swift born?
OWEN: Well, I don't know that much. And the only album with, like, a time in it is 1989. Is that it? Ding ding ding!
NAOMI: What is Taylor Swiftâs favorite color?
OWEN: Oh. Is it... blue?
NAOMI: Uh, incorrect. It's purple. One out of three. Not bad. Although, I don't know if that's enough to give you back your spot. Hey Tenâers, do you want to join me in the trivia room and drop some knowledge? Visit thetenews. com slash contact to get in touch and we might have you on the show.
OWEN: Yeah, and I'll be back in charge next week.
NAOMI: Really?
RYAN: Okay, I think I made it through Bring Your Own Beats day without getting water ballooned.
PAM: Yeah I think youâre good. I really dug those indigenous artists you shared!
CHAD: Ryâ you never showed me your beets.
RYAN: Oh I actually did a whole segmentâwait, Chad, are you holding actual vegetables?
CHAD: Yeah I brought Red Ace beets, like your message said. It sounds like you brought the wrong kind of beetsâŠ
RYAN: Yes, but no, I actuallyâ
CHAD: Sorry. Your message said I could do that to anyone who didnât bring beets.
RYAN: Well played, Chadimus. Well played. I earned that.
PAM: Maybe you should dry off and give Ten News Snaps to one of our listeners.
RYAN: But before that, hereâs a quick note for the grownups.
RYAN: Time for Ten News Snaps!
PAM: A Tenâer named ybrjgbyglgrnyouurtj left us this review on Apple Podcasts and said: âI think the Ten News is good because it is kid friendly and funny but it is also kind of confusing. I love the show.â
