TRANSCRIPT:

PAM: Hey Ry, wanna play funny, scary, cool?

RYAN: Obviously.

PAM: Fat bears. Weinermobiles. And Spider Crabs. Go.

RYAN: Weinermobiles are generally funny, Spider Crabs are usually scary and Fat Bears are almost always coooool. Unless they’re trying to eat me.

PAM: Let’s get talking about them.

RYAN: For sheezy. I’m Ryan Willard.

PAM: And I’m Pamela Kirkland. It’s Tuesday, October 17th.

RYAN: This is Ten Things You Need to Know!

PAM: Today’s Word of the Week is Gaza. All eyes are on Gaza right now, the small strip of land between Israel and Egypt in the Middle East. Last week, Hamas, the terrorist group that governs Gaza, attacked Israel, killing over 1300 Israeli citizens and taking over a hundred Israelis hostage. Israel declared war on Hamas and has been fighting back over the past week by launching rockets into Gaza, killing 2,750 Palestinians since the air raids began. Israel is reportedly making plans to enter Gaza and try to eliminate Hamas. Over the weekend, Israel warned the 1.1 million residents of northern Gaza to evacuate. While meant to warn innocent Palestinians and get them out of harm’s way, it is almost impossible to move that many people out of an area in a short time period. In this case, it is even harder since roads and buildings have been destroyed by rockets. Israel’s goal is to get rid of Hamas and rescue the hostages that were taken by Hamas. This will be a very difficult operation and the Hamas leadership told the Palestinians in the area to stay put, further complicating an already tough situation. Tens of thousands marched in support of Palestinians in cities around the world this weekend calling for an end to Israeli bombing of Gaza.

RYAN: Tik Tok got a big warning this week from Europe. Tik Tok’s CEO was warned by a European representative that it wasn’t doing enough to stop misinformation on its platform. Under the EU’s new Digital Services Act, platforms like Tik Tok have to work to remove false content or face big fines. There is tons of misinformation and disinformation out on social media right now about the Israel-Hamas situation. Sometimes people share old videos or even videos from movies and claim that they are real. The EU also sent warnings to Elon Musk for X (formerly Twitter) and to Mark Zuckerberg for Facebook. Just a reminder: this is why we double check our sources before we share things!

PAM: Moving from world issues to the world series. The MLB playoffs are in full swing and this week is the American and National League Championships, the ALDCS and NLCS. In the NCLS, the Arizona Diamondbacks will try to beat the Philadelphia Phillies and in the ALCS, the Texas Rangers face off against the Houston Astros. Pretty cool to have an all Texas matchup for that one. Who do you think will end up in the World Series? Let us know!

RYAN: Splatfest is coming back in time for Halloween! Nintendo has announced the return of the popular event within Splatoon 3. The Halloween Splatfest, or should we say Splatoween, will run from October 27 to the 29th with costumes and fun for Splatoon players. And on a side note: Super Mario Wonder drops on October 20th and you can check our show notes for the episode where we preview it! Spoiler: it was awesome.

PAM: Were you watching the skies on Saturday? Over the America’s you may have seen a special “ring of fire.”  No not a real fire, it was a solar eclipse. It's called a ring of fire because unlike a full eclipse, the moon doesn’t fully cover the sun and some light peaks through in a ring around the moon. This type of eclipse is also called an annular eclipse. The sky event was visible over the western part of the U.S. and Mexico, Central America, and South America. Time for a quick break, and then we’ll be back with some king crabs and a hot dog on the move!

RYAN: RELEASE THE KING CRABS! The Caribbean King Crabs, also known as Spider Crabs, I mean. Scientists are hoping that they can help the coral in Florida that is suffering from the record warm temperatures that led to coral bleaching and algae blooms that are destroying the coral. The crabs will feed on the algae and give the coral a fighting chance to recover this winter.

PAM: And for actors, the fight continues. Negotiations between the SAG-AFTRA actors’ union and the tv and film studios have stalled out. This is a step back from progress after the writer’s union came to an agreement last month.

RYAN: Is it time for your annual check up at the doctor? Well, it is for a bunch of swans in Lakeland, Florida. This year is the 43rd annual swan round up for the swans that live there. The current 50 swans are descendents of two swans that were a gift from Queen Elizabeth II to Florida in 1957. The swans are checked every year to make sure they are healthy. I hope they all get a treat after.

PAM: The hot dog rides again! Last May, the weinermobile, the famous hot dog shaped car from the Oscar Mayer company changed its name to the Frankmobile. The name didn’t stick and after lots of fan complaints, the company changed it back to the weinermobile. The drivers of the hot dog car are all called hotdoggers, and no, we are not making this up.

RYAN: And lastly, did you get your votes in for Fat Bear Week? This year’s winner of the annual contest held by Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Reserve was announced. And the winner is…. Grazer! Also known as Bear 128. Over 1.3Million people voted in this fun contest that highlights the life of brown bears in Alaska. I think it’s time for a snack…

PAM: That was 10 things you need to know!

RYAN: Just a reminder, this Thursday is Bring Your Own Beets day at the Ten News Studio.

PAM: Wasn’t that supposed to be last Thursday?

RYAN: Yeah, so we bumped it!  And a reminder: anyone who doesn’t bring their own beets can get hit with a water balloon.

PAM: ALRIGHT. I’ll find some fresh beats. I’m Pamela Kirkland.

RYAN: And I’m Ryan Willard. Thanks for listening to The Ten News.
