TRANSCRIPT:
RYAN: PAMELA! What is that?
PAM: What’s what?
RYAN: That! It smells like… wisdom and dry erase markers…
PAM: Ummmm, it’s ummmmm…
RYAN: Are there teachers in the building?!
PAM: Well today, October 5th is World Teachers’ Day, a day to celebrate all that teachers do.
RYAN: I thought teachers aren’t allowed in the Ten News Studio!
PAM: That’s not a real rule. Owen invited them in to give them a tour!
RYAN: Well, I need to have a word or two with these Teacher people.
PAM: You can do that, after we start the show. I’m Pamela Kirkland.
RYAN: And I’m Ryan Willard. It’s Thursday, October 5th.
PAM: This is the Ten News.
RYAN: (in the distance) Where are you teachers…? I know you’re heeeeeere.
PAM: Corinne, this snack buffet looks scrumptious. Here, I made this Happy World Teachers Day sign.
CORINNE: Thanks Pam, that looks awesome!
PAM: Do you have to answer those texts? And are you studying right now?
CORINNE: Yeah…We’ve been getting a lot of messages from Ten’ers, asking for an update on Ukraine. And since its World Teachers’ Day, I’ve been thinking alot about what’s going on around the world.
PAM: Ah yes, we haven’t talked about that in a while. Do you want to do a quick brain dump?
CORINNE: Yes! Lemme get out the facts…
Russia's invasion began with dozens of missile strikes on cities all over Ukraine before dawn on February 24, 2022.
A year and a half in, fighting continues and has left thousands of innocent citizens in the middle of the battle…
The invasion has caused massive civilian casualties and destruction of homes and other civilian infrastructure…
And now there are over 6 million Ukrainian refugees around the world., according to the United Nations Refugee Agency.
And now, coming to today, the Ukrainian President has been making the rounds to keep Ukrainian’s allies, the other countries that have been helping Ukraine with money and military support, focused on what is happening and still invested in stopping the Russian invasion. On September 19th, Zolensky spoke at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. During his speech, Pres. Zolensky encouraged United Nations states to come together against Russia's assault against his country and emphasized that unity among the states can prevent wars. Back in Ukraine, the fighting continues, and more than a year since the invasion, Ukraine is now hoping its latest counter-offensive can turn the war in its favor
PAM: I wonder, Corinne, what is the U.S government doing about all of this?
CORINNE: Good question, Pam. On September 21st, U.S President Joe Biden said that the US will be giving an additional $325 million to Ukraine to help them with their military needs.
CORINNE: According to a report by NBC News, this latest aid package is an addition to the $43B that America has already sent to Ukraine. But with the current fighting in Congress over government spending, the amount of support may change. And since we are celebrating teachers today, I want to give some Ten News Snaps to all the teachers in Ukraine who are finding ways to keep teaching. The teachers and students in Ukraine have to deal with power outages, unsafe conditions, and the fear of attack. As of this past Spring, only 25% of schools were open. But they are finding ways to persevere! Teachers are holding remote virtual classes when it isn’t safe to be in a school building and when the power is out, they find places with generators like gas stations and grocery stores to use as locations for filming virtual lessons that can get sent out once the power is back. Their commitment is inspiring
PAM: That was awesome, thanks so much Corinne.
RYAN: Total sidenote. It’s October 5th and Loki Season 2 drops on Disney + today! Season 1 was my favorite Marvel TV series so far, so I’ve been hyped for Season 2. I’ve been pretty spoiler free but I do know that it’s 6 episodes long and that Victor Timely will be in it, which is a variant of Kang the Conqueror. I. Am. PSYCHED.
OWEN: And here is the break room where we keep all the snacks. But anyway, which set do you want most right now?
JALEN: I’m hoping I get the Lego Hogwarts set for Christmas, that would be–
RYAN: I FOUND YOU! Are you the teacher people?
JALEN/DANIEL: Hey Ryan!
RYAN: Hi! Hello! Sweet Summer child, this is so cool. I, I-I-I’m a big fan. I think teachers are awesome and they’ve made such a big impact on my life. And I’ve always wanted to be one, but I wasn’t the best student, so I never thought it was possible. But I dig what you do, I can’t believe you’re in the studio and I’m GEEKING OUT right now.
OWEN: They’re teachers but they’re also just normal people, Ry.
RYAN: NO THEY ARE REAL LIFE SUPERHEROES TO ME.
JALEN: That’s so kind of you Ry!
DANIEL: Yeah, it was so nice of Owen to invite us.
RYAN: I have so many questions about your life as teachers.
TRACY: Well, Ryan, you are in luck.
Ryan: Tracy! You are here too.
ALT: KAP? What’re you doing here?
TRACY: I couldn’t miss Daniel and Jalen visiting the Ten News studio. And while we are celebrating teachers for World Teachers’ Day, I thought it would be fun to see if they would answer anonymous questions from some students. Because we all want to know what you teachers are really thinking about your students.
Ready for an AMA?
DANIEL: For sure.
JALEN: Absolutely, Ask Me Anything.
PAM: We wanted to give Ten News Snaps to our homeschooled Ten’ers. Homeschooling is parent-led home based education, which lets parents customize their curriculum and learning environment for each child. I think it’s really great to have different learning options! If you’re a teacher or a student that listens to the Ten News in your classroom, we’d love to hear from you! Leave us a voice message at 877-TEN-NEWS and we might just have you on the show!
OWEN: Welcome to the Trivia Room!
JALEN: Whoa! I like what you’ve done with the place! Did you rebuild the throne out of Lego bricks?
OWEN: You know it. You’re normally teaching me things, so today I get to quiz you. Can you handle it?
JALEN: Absolutely.
OWEN: Teachers often go above and beyond for their students. They spend an average of $750 a year on school supplies for their classrooms. But how many hours do they spend teaching in a classroom every school year?
OWEN: Is it:
747 hours
998 hours or
3,250 hours?
OWEN: The answer is… B! On average teachers spend 998 hours in their classroom teaching. That’s a lot of hours, and the average teacher will impact more than 3,000 students through the course of their career! A survey showed that 87% of people wish they told their teachers how much they appreciated them, and I appreciate you and all the teachers in the world!
JALEN: Well I appreciate you and what you bring to the classroom.
OWEN: Hey Ten’ers, do you want to join me in the Trivia room and drop some knowledge? Visit The Ten News Dot Com Slash Contact to get in touch, and we might have you on the show!
PAM: Ryan, did you write your World Teachers’ Day card for Jalen and Daniel?
RYAN: Nope! I built full scale, lego statues of both of them. aaaand I’m done.
PAM: Whoa. That’s wildly impressive. But ummm, how are they supposed to take the statues home?
RYAN: Oh they’re not, it’s so we can always have some of my favorite teachers right here in the studio!
PAM: I love it. Before we show it to them, let’s give Ten News Snaps to one of our listeners.
RYAN: But before we do that, here’s a quick note for the grown-ups.
RYAN: Time for Ten News Snaps!
PAM: An unnamed Ten’er left us this review on Apple Podcasts and said: “MY FAVORITE I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!! (bunch of emojis) me and my family listen in the car all the time and I love the new schedule my sis has swim on Tuesday and Thursday so it works soooooo well”
RYAN: That’s cool because I swim on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays! Thank you, unnamed Ten’er. And thanks for listening to the Ten News. Ten Things You Need to Know drops every Tuesday and our in-depth reports drop every Thursday. And if you want some bonus content, you could join the Ten’ers Club on our website or on Apple Podcasts.
