TRANSCRIPT:
00:00 RYAN: WHAT IN THE DEEP DISH PIZZA IS THIS?
PAM: What is it, Ry?
RYAN: I…I…just found a headline that might…make October my favorite month of the year.
PAM: Oooh, this I gotta hear. Wanna kick it off?
RYAN: I’m Ryan Willard.
PAM: And I’m Pamela Kirkland. It’s Tuesday, October 3rd.
RYAN: This is Ten Things You Need to Know!
RYAN: Alright Ten’ers the word of the week is shutdown, as in a government shutdown…But it didn’t happen! Just before the midnight deadline, the Senate got together and passed a bipartisan bill to keep the money flowing. Well, for 45 days at least. So yes, we’ll be talking about this again on November 17th if Congress doesn’t come to an agreement on a long term funding plan.
03:59 PAM: And now some sad news, California Senator Dianne Feinstein has passed away. Senator Feinstein had served in the Senate for 30 years and was the longest serving woman. Feinstein was considered a trailblazer and was also the first woman to serve as mayor of San Francisco. In our last episode, we discussed term limits, and Feinstein was expected to retire at the end of 2025. California Governor Gavin Newsom has named Laphonsa Bulter to Feinstein’s seat. She will become the second Black woman after Harris to represent California in the Senate
RYAN: And staying with political news, it's been a ruff week at The White House for the Biden’s family dog, Commander. The pure bred German shepherd bit another Secret Service officer last week making this the 11th known instance of Commander biting a Secret Service officer, and acting aggressive. The Biden’s had another German Shepherd, Major, that also behaved aggressively and now resides with family friends in Delaware. We hope that Commander can learn to be a good boy!
PAM: Up next, we have a pretty cheesy headline that proves that ‘absence makes the heart grow fondue…’ After SpongeBob SquarePants Kraft Mac & Cheese was discontinued in 2010, thousands of fans took to social media, emailed the Kraft CEO, and even started a change.org petition to bring back the beloved Bikini Bottom-themed pasta, and it worked! Kraft Mac & Cheese has announced that it's bringing Spongebob Squarepants shapes back to store shelves in October for a limited time.
RYAN: And, for our golf fans out there Charlie Woods is proving to be a stripe off the old Tiger. The 14-year-old shot the best round of his career to win his age group’s regional qualifier for the Notah Begay III Junior Gold National Championships. He shot a one-under par, 71 in his opening round, with an even more impressive second round score of 66 that included 9 birdies. Charlie was able to dominate the course with the help of his caddie, and better known as his father, Tiger Woods. Charlie describes having his father on the course with him as being in their own little world and being able to take the game one shot at a time. What a dynamic duo!
PAM: And, we’ll be right back with spider webs, phone notifications, and pizza right after this message for the grownups!
PAM: Hey Ryan, are you reading? We are doing the headlines, it isn’t really reading time.
06:37 RYAN: Well Pam, I’m reading a book that has been banned in some states because this is Banned Books Week. The Week started on October 1st and runs until the 7th and is meant to rally support to fight book bans across the U.S. And this year, one of my favorite actors and book lovers, LeVar Burton, is the honorary chair of Banned Books Week. If you want to find out more about the week and Let Freedom Read Day on October 7th, Ten’ers can check out our show notes for more details.
PAM: I love a good book and our next headline reminds me to limit my screen time. Research from our friends at Common Sense Media found about half of 11-17 year-olds get AT LEAST 237 notifications on their phones every day. Some even receive nearly 5,000 notifications within a 24-hour period! The study is based on surveys of 203 people from ages 11-17 who agreed to install an app on their phones for nine days for researchers to track their smartphone use.
PAM: It’s a bird… it’s a plane… It's a skydiver landing on a unicorn! Jan Zackl was among a number of skydivers who attempted the landing during the annual Skydive Langar in Nottinghamshire in the UK where he was the only one capable of the daring maneuver. Coming in full speed-ahead, Zackl landed directly on top of the inflatable unicorn, demonstrating his precision with a parachute. Checkout our show notes to watch the full video!
RYAN: Have you thought about what you want to be for Halloween yet? A unicorn might be kinda fun! Oh, and we should start decorating the office since we’re only 28 days out from the spookiest day of the year. Speaking of Halloween decorations though, Nebraska wildlife experts are warning residents to not put fake spider webs outside. Synthetic spider web decorations are made with plastic-based materials that aren’t biodegradable which poses threats to wildlife and can entangle small critters from squirrels to owls. So, to protect the animals, we’re decorating with pumpkins only this year that are safe, nutritious, and delicious for wildlife!
RYAN: And, no matter how you slice it, this is the best headline of today’s show. I just recently learned that: October is National Pizza Month! You know how I feel about pizza, whether it’s a cheese pizza, or pepperoni, or ham and pineapple. I LOVE IT. Pizza first surfaced in 1889 when it was made for Italian King Umberto I and Queen Margherita on a trip in Naples, and since then has been one of the world’s favorite foods. Pizza is perfect for many reasons, including that you can eat it at any time of day – even breakfast, some would argue it tastes better left over, and vegans, vegetarians, and those who are gluten-free can find a pizza that works for them! I’ve now said the word pizza so many times that I feel obligated to eat some IMMEDIATELY.
RYAN: That was 10 things you need to know!
PAM: Check out tomorrow’s episode where we’ll have some guests in the studio, and I don’t know how Ryan will feel about it…
RYAN: Oh no. Don’t tell me you’re bringing that <butterfly> back. Please no.
PAM: I promise it’s not a butterfly. I’m Pamela Kirkland,
10:14 RYAN: And I am a relieved Ryan Willard. Thanks for listening to The Ten News.
