Bethany Van Delft: [00:00:00] What was Julie Andrews favorite picture book of 2020? Which TV shows did we love the most this year? And what was the year's most popular ice cream flavor? I'm Bethany Van Delft. And we'll get into a few of our favorite things on today's The Ten News, our final episode of the year.

[00:00:24] Okay, let's get into The Ten News.

Various voices: [00:00:27] Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.

Bethany Van Delft: [00:00:35] 2020 has at long last come to an end. And it's certainly been an unforgettable year of ups, downs, sideways, I mean, really you name a direction and it's been that. So throughout December, we've been looking back at some of our favorite things from 2020, 'cause who doesn't love ending things on a positive note?

[00:00:59] In our [00:01:00] final episode of the year, we're sharing our favorite TV shows of 2020. Here are The Ten News Top 10.

[00:01:07] Number 10 - Connected. Hosted by science journalists, Latiff Nasser. This series examines all the ways. Humans are connected to the world around them.

[00:01:19] Number nine -  Last Kids On Earth. "We made a home, we built a community." For fans of the book series this series watch as a young teen and his friends fend off zombies and monsters alike during the apocalypse.

[00:01:34] Number eight - Ashley Garcia, Genius in Love. "Hi, I'm Ashley Garcia." The titular character is a teenage rocket scientist hired to work for NASA. I mean that alone is enough to make you want to watch it. Huh?

[00:01:49] Number seven - Fuller House. "This wedding it's one that I never thought would happen." This is a reboot of the classic eighties family sitcom that shows the Tanner kids and friends all [00:02:00] grown up raising families of their own. I bet there are some parents out there they're going to be watching this on their own.

[00:02:06] Number six - Marvel Hero Project. "Through doing what I love I've been able to help people and do something that's considered extraordinary." Don't be fooled by the name cause this shows about real life young heroes make positive change in their communities every day. Look out Luke Cage,

[00:02:24] Stick around till the end of The Ten to hear the rest of our list.

[00:02:30] Did you know that media magnate, Oprah Winfrey has been sharing her famous annual favorite things list for 24 years? That's like two or three of you. It all started in 1996 with a pair of pajamas she loved so much. She gave a set to every member of her talk show studio audience. Who doesn't love free pajamas?

[00:02:55] Since then, landing a spot on Oprah's favorite things list has led to [00:03:00] massive sales of the featured products and even helped some small companies become household names.

[00:03:08] One of my favorite things about The Ten News this year was getting to hear from some pretty special guests. Like when we spoke with the legendary Julie Andrews, her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton, and granddaughter Hope Hamilton, about their amazing podcast Julie's Library.

Julie Andrews: [00:03:28] Oh, the love of the books, the feel of books, the joy that comes, I mean, Hopi, you are the best example. I've you read how many books a week? You are a great reader and it's such a joy to see how passionate you are about it.

Hope Hamilton: [00:03:49] Yeah. Um, I. I mean, since I was little, I've always grown up around books and people who love to read. And I grew up with my [00:04:00] mom reading to me every night before bed so it became like a, it's just something I love to be able to get swept away into another story for a little bit, to kind of get away from real life is so fun.

Emma Walton Hamilton: [00:04:14] It's true. And, you know, I think also another piece in addition to really hoping to convey the, the joy and the pleasure of reading, uh, and reading together as families is the idea of enriching an experience or reading experience in multiple ways.

[00:04:30] So thinking of not just reading the book, that's of course the most wonderful and best part, but then perhaps. You know, doing a drawing or an activity related to the book or having an inspiring conversation about the themes that the book raises or the questions that the book raises.

Bethany Van Delft: [00:04:48] We asked the multi-generational team to tell us what books they enjoyed most in 2020.

Julie Andrews: [00:04:53] There's a book by Sophie Blackall, or I think that's correct uh, [00:05:00] pronunciation called "If You Come To Earth" and it's wonderfully illustrated, and it's about what you'll find and what we are is what humanity is all about. And it's a charming book and I was thrilled to read it for myself.

Emma Walton Hamilton: [00:05:18] That's a favorite of mine of 2020 as well. It's so beautifully done and with such humor and grace. Another favorite of mine for 2020, since we've been talking about Jane Yolan and Heidi Stempele, their newest book is called "I Am The Storm" and it's an absolutely exquisite book about trauma and about natural disasters in the world, but about resilience and how we survive and how every time there is a tornado or a hurricane or a storm or a fire, um, we can take care of each other and ourselves and be creative. And how we can have internal storms and [00:06:00] how our own emotional life can be like a storm and we can take care of ourselves in that way as well. It's, it's multilayered and rich and, you know, classic Jane and Heidi.

[00:06:11] Julie Andrews: [00:06:11] And yet deceptively sweet and simple.

Emma Walton Hamilton: [00:06:15] Yeah. It's just beautiful .

Bethany Van Delft: [00:06:16] Hope, what is your book choice of 2020?

Hope Hamilton: [00:06:21] First of all, I'm I'm a huge fan of classics. Um, so. I always enjoy a re-read of "Weathering Heights" or "Little Women," as I said before. But, um, this year I got into, um, "Dune" by Frank Herbert. My brother, Sam, put me on it. He read it last year and loved it. It's a very kind of dystopian future, if you will. So it's a little bit scary sometimes, but, uh, yeah, it's really good.

Bethany Van Delft: [00:06:50] Such great recommendations. I sure hope the beginning of 2021 gives me a little bit of downtime so I can check them all out. Thanks for [00:07:00] the recommendations.

[00:07:05] Earlier in the episode, we started counting down our favorite top 10 TV shows of 2020. Here are the final five.

[00:07:13] Number five  - Lego Masters. "So Lego Masters is an elimination competition show." For fans of Lego's or anyone who likes to build. This reality competition show pits innovative minds against one another to see who can build the best.

[00:07:29] Number four - Diary of a Future President. "This is my old diary. What is in there?" The title lets you know that the lead will one day become president, but this one series examines what her life was like in middle school.

[00:07:44] Number three - Earth to Ned. "For thousands of years, we've searched for intelligent life. What we're about to discover is that we should keep looking." Alien, Ned and his Lieutenant Cornelius are sent to invade earth, but instead become [00:08:00] obsessed with his culture and start a late night talk show. Hilarious.

[00:08:05] Number two - The Baby-Sitters Club. "It all started at the very beginning of seventh grade." Based on the children's novels that debuted in 1986. This Netflix series is fun, fun, fun. You'll end up rooting for the young group of girlfriends as they launched their own business, The Babysitter's Club.

[00:08:22] And our number one, pick The Mandalorian.

[00:08:28] Star Wars fans of all ages will love this Disney Plus show that depicts lawless life in the wake of the fall of the galactic empire it's action packed. Visually stunning. And the bond between Mando and Grogu, AKA Baby Yoda will give you all the feels. Did you have a favorite show this year that didn't make our list?
