Do you know a teacher who deserves a shout out for all that they do? Attention everyone, may I have your attention? A lot of you do. Today we're saluting all the educators out there and celebrating their awesomeness for World Teachers’ Day. I'm Bethany Van Delft. It's October 5th, and this is The Ten News.

World Teachers' Day was first celebrated in 1996 as a way to recognize the work of educators all across the globe. It's taken on a bigger meaning this year, as many teachers tirelessly adapted to keep their classes going during the global pandemic. To recognize the challenges of this past 18 months and the role that teachers play in getting our schools back up and running. This year's theme is teachers at the heart of education recovery. Nice. From zooming from their closets, adapting to new rules in the classroom, and balancing teaching with their own kids at home. Teachers have overcome big obstacles to keep school going during the pandemic. This school year, many teachers returned to their classrooms after being away for 12 months. And they've worked to keep students engaged while navigating the increased threat of the Delta variant. And students not yet old enough for vaccines. The theme speaks to this important role of educators to help us move past the pandemic and the support that they need to return to their thoughts in classrooms all around the world.

Teacher Shoutout  1:42

Thank you very much. Hi, my name is India Philosophia, I'm fourth grade and age nine, and I want to give a shout out to my new teacher, Paige for welcoming me to my new school. I'm so happy to be with her and she's overall my favorite teacher I've ever had.

Teacher Shoutout  2:03

I'm Owen and I'd like to thank all my teachers for just being really nice and really supporting this year.

Teacher Shoutout  2:11

Hi, I'm Harper. I'm Frankie. And I'm Avery. We want to give a special shout out to our teacher, CJ who left us last year. He was a great teacher. And we really miss him. Happy World Teacher Appreciation Day!

Teacher Shoutout  2:26

Hello, we are twins, Ethan and Isaiah. We are 10 years old and in fifth grade, we want to give a shout out to our mom. She started homeschooling us last year because of the pandemic and we want to say thank you because she makes our school really fun.

Since this holiday is World Teachers' Day, here are a few ways the day is celebrated around the world. Number one, in Czech Republic teachers compete to be crowned the most popular teacher in the whole country. Some teachers perform skills, music, even puppet shows in front of a cheering crowd. The winner is awarded the Golden Amos Crown, named from a 17th century philosopher who promoted education. Number two, in India students go to school on Teachers' Day, but it's no ordinary day. What does that mean? Students spend the day celebrating their teachers with singing and dancing competitions, poetry and even imitating their teachers. In some places the oldest students take over teaching for the day to give their teachers a break. Oh. Number three, in Mexico on DΓa Del Maestros, many schools take off for the whole day. In others students bring their teachers gifts. The most popular gifts include flowers or apples to symbolize knowledge. Number four, in the Philippines, they don't just celebrate National Teachers' Day they celebrate an entire national teachers month from September 5th to October 5th. Awesome. In addition to celebrations and events at school, this year, they even released a postage stamp so students could honor their teachers while sending mail. That's great. Not everyone has a whole month off of celebrations or has school canceled for teachers day. But, if you appreciate your teachers, the easiest thing you could do is tell them or better yet, write them a note. They'll love that. Hey, grownups. Are you in the family enjoying The Ten News? If so, could you please do us a big, big favor. All you have to do is go to Apple Podcasts and give us a rating and a review. Hopefully five stars but no pressure. You don't even have to stop listening. You could do it right now. Don't worry, I'll wait. Just kidding. Take your time, do it though. It may not seem like a big deal, but it really helps other listeners find The Ten News so our community can grow. Thanks again for listening. We really appreciate it. Now let's check in on what else is happening.

A big first for the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Marian Croak and Dr. Patricia Bath will make history as the first two black women inducted and will join 27 other honorees as the class of 2022. Marian Croak is an accomplished engineer and Dr. Bath was an ophthalmologist who invented a device that's used to perform eye surgeries. It's great to see these amazing women get the recognition they deserve. No pun intended. Excellent. October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month. It's a time where we shine the spotlight on the abilities and talents of people with down syndrome and celebrate them as we should every day. To learn more about down syndrome, check out our episode from March 18. Sounds good. Some sad animal news. The US Fish and Wildlife Service announced last week that more than two dozen animal species will be declared extinct and removed from the endangered species list. One species that might soon be declared extinct is that Ivory-billed Woodpecker. Although some scientists still have hope that there are a few of these birds left in the wild. And speaking of extinct animals, a new species of dinosaur has been discovered in Morocco. The dinosaur is an Ankylosaurus, a type of dinosaur that had spikes on its back for self defense. The spikes on this newly discovered dinosaur were directly attached to its skeleton, something scientists have never seen before. Can't imagine that anyone would have wanted to mess with those spiky dinos. Coming up next.

What, what, what's the big idea?

Bethany Van Delft  7:24

Trivia on The Ten. Teachers have gone above and beyond to make students feel comfortable and excited about returning to classrooms this year. What did one New York school do to welcome back its kids? Was it a) have the students walk into the classroom in big dance line? b) dressed up as big Zoom screens to say goodbye to virtual school? or c) dress as superheroes and bust out their best dance moves?

Bethany Van Delft  7:59

Did you guess it? The answer is C. The teachers were so excited to have students showing up in the first day that they dressed up in superhero costumes. Yes, it was a big first day for the students in September. And they were met with high fives from multiple Captain America's at the doors to the school. I can do this all day. Here The Ten News we think teachers are superheroes. Time's up, but before we go, here is a quick note for the grownups. Thanks for listening to The Ten News. Look out for our new episodes on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and extras on Saturdays. The Ten News is a co-production of Small But Mighty Media and Next Chapter Podcasts and is distributed by iHeartRadio. The Ten News creative team is planning a thank you teacher puppet show. I can't wait to see that includes Tracey Crooks, Pete Musto, Andrew Hall, and Nathalie Alonso. Our production director is Jeremiah Tittle. And our executive producers are Donald Albright and show creator Tracy Leeds Kaplan. I'm Bethany Van Delft, and thanks for listening to The Ten News. To be honest, I didn't even know that there are multiple types of Ankylosaurus. Learn something new every Ten.
