I'm Bethany Van Delft. And this is The Ten News where we get the lowdown on what's up in the world. It's Tuesday, August 24th. Well, this week marks the end of summer and the start of the school year for many of you. For The Ten News, this is the final episode of our first season. So exciting! Okay, let's get into The Ten.
Alex 0:38
Hi, my name is Alex. I'm 10 years old and I live in San Francisco. This summer I had a lot of summer camps, like spray painting camp, skateboarding camp, and zoo camp. The most fun I had the summer was going to a waterpark for my birthday. Summer camp and summer were so much different than it normally is because of COVID because we had to wear masks all the time, I couldn't do very many indoor activities and that's basically different for me. Sometimes being outside is a little smoggy. Because there are fires happening. And it's kind of getting harder to breathe with all of the smoke. July and August this summer, were kind of like up and down like we had sometimes we had days where 75 sometimes we are dangerous, like in the low 60s. It was really up and down in the weather. I also went on a few trips during the summer, I went to Santa Cruz, I went camping in the woods. And I also am in Tahoe currently. And yeah!

Last fall, we spoke to a high school graduate who because of the pandemic decided to take a gap year, a year off from school to learn and explore independently, before going to college. Tyler Newman had lots of really cool ideas for how to spend a year learning on her own. From hip-hop to Mandarin, she had a lot of topics she wanted to tackle. Now that the year is over, we caught up with Tyler again to find out how it all went. We asked 10 questions on The Ten about her gap year.
Tyler Newman 2:29
Hi, everyone. My name is Tyler Newman. And I'm so excited to be back with The Ten News for some follow up questions on my gap year.
Bethany Van Delft 2:37
What is the number one coolest thing you did during your gap year?
Tyler Newman 2:41
I think by far the coolest thing that I have done was a program that I did with a company called OceanX, where I went on a research vessel for a two-week period and I was one of the media fellows for this program. So I was filming the experience that we had during this journey and also learning a lot about the science behind the marine biology component, of the research that was happening on the vessel. Additionally, it was such an amazing experience because a lot of the crew on the ship came from so many different places, so it felt like every single interaction I was having was some type of cultural exchange, which was amazing. I had so much fun, I really took away a lot of lifelong friends from that program. So, that's really something that stands out as a highlight of my gap year.
Bethany Van Delft 3:30
What's something you did that you're really proud of?
Tyler Newman 3:33
I think one thing that I did, that I'm proud of and one thing that I'm still trying to practice is being open to new possibilities and to change. I never anticipated taking a gap year. I never anticipated doing a lot of the things that I did during my gap year, like the OceanX Program, like helping out with The Women of Color Conference with doing a lot of the different things that kind of fell into my path. But I think that one thing I was proud of was that I was always open to different possibilities, even if they didn't align with the perceptions of what I should be doing or the goals or outline that I had for my future. Really proud of myself for being open-minded for what my future could become.
Bethany Van Delft 4:16
What's one thing you learned this year that you could not have learned at school?
Tyler Newman 4:20
I think that this one kind of is in line with number two. I think it's that life is just unpredictable. And sometimes you have to roll with the punches. You can't plan everything out. There's not a formula for everything you can't outsmart your way through life. Sometimes you just have to flow and I think not being so rigid about things is really beautiful at times and allows you to have a more full and fulfilled life.
Bethany Van Delft 4:45
Was there anything about this year that surprised you?
Tyler Newman 4:48
I think everything. If someone had said that I'd be where I am right now last year or like year and a half ago before the pandemic, I would have laughed in their face. I think that I everything was surprising because I was always being challenged during my gap year, and always being pushed to be a better version of myself.
Bethany Van Delft 5:10
How did you keep yourself motivated throughout the year?
Tyler Newman 5:13
I think I've always been a really driven and motivated person. But, it was definitely hard at times to keep that motivation up throughout my gap year, because during your gap year, it's like everything is kind of being formed and planned by you very much so. Not having someone say that you have to wake up at eight and like, go to school and like, do extracurriculars and do homework. And like, you're not working towards this massive undertaking, such as applying to schools. So there's no like, one path you have to follow, and you're very much kind of like, able to do whatever really calls to you. So that can be really overwhelming. I think by following a lot of the passions that I had, or passions that I didn't feel like I had time to kind of pursue in high school, I feel like that really kept me motivated. Because I, I knew I had a limited amount of time on my gap year that I could invest in some of these things I'm really passionate about. And, I was like, I'm going to make the most of this time that I have and do the best that I can to make that really worthwhile.
Bethany Van Delft 6:28
Did you ever get around to making that Mandarin hip-hop masterpiece we talked about? Because I would love to hear it!
Tyler Newman 6:35
No, I did not. But I really really want to. That's definitely top of my list for the next things that I want to achieve. I've definitely done a whole lot of Mandarin practice, that's for sure. I actually just came back from a mandarin restaurant where I was practicing my Mandarin with my friend. So I've been trying to incorporate Mandarin into more of my life and not being so shy or scared about making mistakes when learning languages and being more out there. And I guess sharing my language experience with those around me. So, I feel like that's a change that's happened since the last time that we talked on The Ten News. I'm definitely being more open and brave in my language learning journey.
Bethany Van Delft 7:20
What three words would you use to sum up your gap year?
Tyler Newman 7:23
I'd say magical, unprecedented and, and never-ending. I feel like my gap year is a never-ending process. I've developed a mindset that I feel like will carry with me long beyond my gap year officially ends.
Bethany Van Delft 7:45
What's next for you?
Tyler Newman 7:46
What's next is that I'm going to be going to Stanford in the fall, hopefully, being on campus and being able to get back to school and trying some different things where I'm still kind of having that mindset of like I'm owning my experience, but also being able to have a little bit of a more traditional educational experience, as well. So I'm really excited for that and to meet new people, be on the West Coast. There's lots of new exciting chapters that are ahead, and I'm so excited to experience them.
Bethany Van Delft 8:16
What are you most looking forward to about starting college?
Tyler Newman 8:19
I think I'm looking forward to a change of pace, a different experience. Like I've lived on the East Coast for the majority of my life. I've gone to the same schools and since I was five. I've always gone to an all-girls school, I've never gone to a coed school. I feel like a lot of my experiences kind of start with the word only. Like I've only done this, I've only done that. In terms of like, while I've had a wealth of amazing experiences sometimes and like the most basic ones in terms of location and education. They haven't changed. So, I'm excited to gain some more change in terms of those experiences.
Bethany Van Delft 8:58
And the last question in out 10 questions on The Ten. How do you think your gap year has prepared you for college?
Tyler Newman 9:06
I think that I'm definitely a more mature individual. I am more thoughtful. I had a lot of time during my gap year to think, reflect, develop new opinions on myself and others in the world and kind of define my way of being in my truth, a little bit more. So I feel like I'm forming my beliefs, while also being open to change and hearing other people's perspectives. And just being more clear about how I want to navigate the world and the person that I want to become while I do that.
Bethany Van Delft 9:40
Thank you so much for talking to us, Tyler. I know you have been so busy.
Tyler Newman 9:46
Thank you so much for listening to my episode. I'm so excited to share this conversation with The Ten News. Thank you so much for having me, bye!
Lulu 10:01
I'm Lulu. I'm nine and a half and I live in Boston. The most fun thing this summer is we went to Nantucket. I love Nantucket! It's the best thing in the whole wide world!
Bethany Van Delft 10:16
Up next, It's time for...
Various Voices 10:18
What, what, what's the big idea?
Bethany Van Delft 10:21
Trivia on The Ten. Today's date, August 24th is a big day in aviation history. It's the day in 1932 that Amelia Earhart made history as the first woman to fly across the United States. How long was her transcontinental flight? Was it a) 10 hours? b) 25 hours or c) 19 hours? Did you guess it? The answer is... C!
Bethany Van Delft 11:00
Earhart's history-making flight from Los Angeles, California to Newark, New Jersey took 19 hours and five minutes to complete. She then went on to beat her time and set a new speed record a year later, by making the journey in 17 hours and seven minutes. And you thought six hours was too long. I wonder what kind of snacks she brought with her on her flights. Were they eating Pocky sticks and 1932?
Bethany Van Delft 11:35
