TRANSCRIPT:
00:00 PAM: Ry, is it warm enough to still be wearing shorts?
RYAN: Pam. Tay Tay Swift is on fire, tech leaders are in the hot seat, and a president is feeling the heat. Itโs been a hot week.
PAM: Okay thatโs fair. But can we turn the AC down?
RYAN: Fine, but only if we start the show.
PAM: Iโm Pamela Kirkland.
RYAN: and Iโm Ryan Willard. Itโs Tuesday, September 19th.
01:25 PAMELA: This is the Ten News and here are Ten Things You Need to Know!
RYAN: Todayโs Word of the Week is impeachment, yup, that word again. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced that the U.S. House of Representatives will open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. The inquiry on โallegations of abuse of power, obstruction, and corruptionโ comes following months of hearings finding no concrete evidence of misconduct by President Biden. But, with the inquiry, congressional investigators will have the legal power for a more extensive investigation.
PAM: While it might be a long road ahead for the president, US Astronaut Frank Rubio is nearing the end of his record-breaking space mission! Rubio and his crew mates have been in low-Earth orbit for more than 355 days and aren't expected to return from Earth until September 27th. This means that Rubio is on track to spend 371 days in orbit, reaching another milestone of becoming the first American to spend more than one calendar year in microgravity! And, speaking of records, did you see that Taylor Swift tied the record for most VMA wins in ONE night!? At the 2023 Video Music Awards, Swift was nominated for 11 awards and swept 9 of them including an album and artist of the year, song of the year, video of the year, and show of the summer! This brings her to 23 VMA awards in her lifetime with the only person ahead of her being the one and only, Beyonce.
RYAN: Tay Tay isnโt the only one in the spotlight right now, did you see that Apple debuted the new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro Max!? According to Apple, the new iPhone represents the very best of their innovations with features like aerospace-grade titanium design, a customizable action button for users to personalize their iPhone experience and a camera upgrade. And, the design is better for the environment, such as its 100 percent recycled aluminum substructure, and 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery! Visit the link in our show notes to learn more!
PAM: There are all kinds of things happening in the world of tech right now. Last week, top tech executives including Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Sundar Pichai, Mark Zuckerberg and more met with lawmakers in Washington D.C. to discuss the pros and cons of artificial intelligence. Gaining popularity in the past year, AI and its chatbot, ChatGPT has caused lawmakers and regulators to question how this technology could alter jobs, spread disinformation, maybe even develop its own kind of intelligence. And, while AI could pose risks, it could also help solve health and energy problems around the world. We should see an update on AI from the White House as soon as this year, but in the meantime, if you have any questions, give us a call at 877-TEN-NEWS and listen to our episode all about ChatGPT linked in our show notes!
RYAN: And, weโll be right back after this message for the grownups!
06:01 RYAN: Tech isnโt the only industry using AI. Coca-Cola put artificial intelligence to the test, and to work, to create their newest limited-edition flavor. Thatโs right, Y3000 is Cokeโs latest mystery flavor that tastes like normal coke with a hint of the future. Coca-Cola gathered real human insights to find out what flavors people associate with the future but left the flavor pairings and can design to AI. I wonder if tasting the future means that you can see the future!?
PAM: Iโm not sure but if thatโs the case, Ry. But itโs a good thing the couple getting married in our next headline couldnโt see the future. It wouldโve totally ruined the surprise! Last week, Ed Sheeran crashed a coupleโs wedding at the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas after his concert was canceled due to safety concerns. He came through the doors of the chapel serenading the bride and groom with his unreleased song, โMagicalโ and even signed as the eye witness on their marriage license!
RYAN: On Thursday last week a strike was looming as the United Auto Workers Union awaited negotiations on pay, benefits, and job protection, and as the deadline expired, autoworkers began their walkouts early Friday morning. Itโs the first time in its history that the UWA is on strike against all of the Big Three automakers, Ford, GM, and Stallantis at the same time. In a last ditch effort before the deadline, automakers offered the union pay hikes but it just wasnโt enough as they fight for a better future for themselves, their families, and their jobs.
PAM: Standing up for what you believe is right is so important, Tenโers, whether that means a strike, a peaceful protest, or even a 300 mile swim. Thatโs right, Lewis Pugh, founder of the Lewis Pugh Foundation, swam over 300 miles across the Hudson River from Adirondack Park to Manhattan. The Lewis Hugh Foundation has a goal to fully protect 30% of the worldโs oceans by 2030. Recognizing that the Hudson River was once one of the most polluted rivers in the world, Pugh swam the Hudson to highlight the progress that has been made and promote the need for clean rivers.
RYAN: And for our last headline of the day, meet Tally the Turtle. Tally is a Kempโs ridley turtle, one of the worldโs rarest, and endangered, species, that was swept 4,000 miles across the Atlantic ocean from Texas to Wales. She washed ashore on a north Wales beach where she was rescued and cared for for months at the Anglesey Sea Zoo. Tally the turtle is expected to make a safe return to the US and will be transferred to the Houston Zoo to make sure she is healthy enough before being released back into the wild.
RYAN: That was 10 things you need to know!
PAM: Check out Thursdayโs episode where Ryan will get to celebrate his favorite things!
RYAN: YES! I LOVE MY FAVORITE THINGS!
PAM: Iโm Pamela Kirkland,
10:23 RYAN: And Iโm Ryan Willard. Thanks for listening to The Ten News.
