TRANSCRIPT:
Ryan Willard 00:00
It's Ryan Willard vs. Pamela Kirkland in this epic 1:1 Ten News matchup. Pamela leads 20 - 18. This is gamepoint. Will she buckle under the pressure?
Pamela Kirkland 00:10
Ryan, part of the reason I'm winning is because you've been commentating the whole game.
Ryan Willard 00:16
Ryan is officially in Pamela's head as she dribbles relentlessly behind the three point line. She's questioning everything. Should I have eaten a bigger breakfast? Can I really beat Ryan? What time is it?
Pamela Kirkland 00:28
She shoots, she scores! And actually, I know what time it is Ryan, it's time to start the show. I'm the winner of this basketball game, Pamela Kirkland.
Ryan Willard 00:41
And I'm the person demanding a rematch, Ryan Willard. It's Tuesday, May 30th.
Pamela Kirkland 00:46
This is The Ten News.
Ryan Willard 00:48
Here are Ten Things You Need to Know.
Pamela Kirkland 00:55
First up, Monday, May 29th was Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a US holiday to honor current members of the military and veterans as well as remember those who lost their lives while serving their country. Many towns and cities hold parades and memorial events. And of course schools and many businesses are closed to commemorate the holiday.
Ryan Willard 01:17
Here at The Ten News. We thank all current members of the military and our veterans. We are so grateful for their service and their sacrifices.
Pamela Kirkland 01:25
And in somber news, the queen of rock and roll, Tina Turner, died last week at the age of 83. Her hit songs like 'Proud Mary' and 'What's Love Got to Do With It' earned her seven Grammy Awards, a Kennedy Center Honor, and membership in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In fact, Tina Turner is the first black woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, twice. Even though Tina Turner is gone, we know her music and her legacy will keep on rolling.

Pride Month is coming up in June and many companies demonstrate their support for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer community with pride-themed clothing and merchandise. But after some customers in Target stores threw pride items on the ground tipped over displays and confronted employees, Target moved and in some cases removed their pride merchandise. In a statement, Target said since introducing this year's collection we've experienced threats impacting our team membersโ sense of safety and well-being while at work.
Pamela Kirkland 02:38
Over 500 Anti-LGBTQ plus bills have been introduced across America this year. So, the fight for equality still has a long way to go.
Ryan Willard 02:51
And some good news for the environment. France has banned short flights within the country. Under the new law, if a train can get you there in two and a half hours or less, there's no need to fly. Critics say it's not enough and activists had proposed cutting flights where the train time is up to four hours but this is still a step in the right direction for lower emissions. Taking a train instead of a plane can cut emissions by up to 54%.
Pamela Kirkland 03:19
Kind of makes you wish we had high-speed rail like Europe and Japan here in the US, right? Totally. In exciting news from the world of medicine, a paralyzed man received brain implants that allowed him to walk again. Wow, Gert Jan Oskam is from the Netherlands and was paralyzed in a bike accident 12 years ago. The implants in his brain transmit messages to his nerves. So when he thinks about walking, he can. That's easy for most people. But for folks with brain injuries, strokes or spinal injuries, the messages our brains send can get mixed up or stop working. This breakthrough could change the lives of millions of people with paralysis from spinal or brain injuries.
Ryan Willard 04:11
A 10-year-old kid in the UK changed her family's iPad password and made in app purchases in Roblox without her mom's permission. She racked up a bill of 2,500 pounds. That's about $3,000. Her mom was eventually refunded but she warned other parents to be very careful of what their kids can do on tablets and in apps.
Pamela Kirkland 04:50
That is an insane amount of money. Yeah, it's important to get permission before making any purchases.
Ryan Willard 04:59
In politics, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that he will run for president in 2024. He's hoping to beat out Donald Trump and a number of others for the Republican nomination. He made the official announcement on Twitter in a conversation with Twitter owner Elon Musk after major technical issues on Twitter impacted the announcement. DeSantis has championed strict conservative legislation in Florida including the so-called Stop Woke Act and Don't Say Gay Law.
Pamela Kirkland 05:26
Speaking of laws affecting education in Florida, and Miami School District has restricted access to youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman's inauguration poem, The Hill We Climb. Why the book, even though it's approved for all grade levels, has been moved to an area of the library for middle schoolers and up, a parent complained that the poem contained, quote, "indirectly hate messages." The parent also incorrectly stated that Oprah wrote the poem. Amanda Gorman responded by pointing out that queer and non-white writers are most affected by school book bans. Now we invite you Tenโers to judge for yourselves if this section includes hate messages. Here are the lines the parent referred to.
The Hill We Climb 06:13
We've braved the belly of the beast. We've learned that quiet isn't always peace. In the norms and notions of what just is, isn't always just is. And yet the dawn is ours before we knew it. Somehow we do it, somehow we've weathered into. Witnessed a nation that isn't broken, but simply unfinished.
Ryan Willard 06:40
Ten News Snaps to Amanda Gorman for standing up for her work. Now, on to some exciting news from the Mesozoic Era. That's when the dinosaurs lived. Paleontologists in Argentina unearthed one of the largest dinosaurs to ever live the 100-foot-long Titanosaur. Its bones were so big and so heavy that while transporting them from Patagonia to Buenos Aires, the bones cause the vehicle to tip. The bones went flying and when those humongous fossils landed, they broke the road. Luckily, no one was hurt. Even with road-breaking bones Titanosaur isn't the biggest dinosaur of all time. That honor goes to the supersaurus which was around 128 feet long.
Pamela Kirkland 07:33
Yikes. And last but certainly not least, the NBA Finals are coming up starting June 1st. The surprise breakout team this year has got to be the Denver Nuggets. They just made it to their first-ever NBA finals after last week's massive win over the LA Lakers. That game was also the most-watched conference game on any network. The Denver Nuggets will play up to seven games against the Miami Heat. And the first team to get four wins will take home the NBA championship trophy. That was Ten Things You Need to Know.
