Here are Ten Things You Need to Know. Our lead story is a big change at TikTok. TikTok has announced it is limiting daily screen time on the app for under 18-year-olds. After an hour on the app, kids will see a message telling them to enter a passcode to keep scrolling through TikToks. The social media platform is responding to concerns about how long teens spend on the app and on social media in general, health experts helped come up with a 60-minute limit. And while TikTok tries to protect kids, some teens are taking matters into their own hands by getting rid of their smartphones altogether. High schoolers in Brooklyn, New York have formed a Luddite club. What does that mean? Luddites are people who reject technology. Club members traded in their smartphones for flip bones and meet weekly to read paint so have conversations and listen to music. This trend is also being called the smartphone liberation movement and could have health benefits for kids who feel addicted to their phones.

And another place teens love coffee chain Starbucks was in court for union busting unions are organizations formed by employees to help protect employees from being fired without reason ensure employers pay them fair wages and negotiate for better benefits. A federal judge in New York State found that Starbucks broke the law by firing employees who were trying to unionize Starbucks will have to rehire the workers or compensate them. This is a win for labor organizations around the country who are fighting for fair contracts and union protection for employees. The weather around the US has continued to baffle meteorologists. Last week, more than 75,000 California residents were snowed in or lost power. Yosemite National Park saw a record-breaking 40 inches of snow and is now closed indefinitely. Over the weekend tornadoes wreaked havoc in the Midwest and southern states. The extreme weather we've seen this winter was caused by unusual weather phenomena including bomb cyclones, atmospheric rivers and Lake effects.

In international news, the G20, a coalition of 20 of the most powerful countries in the world, met last week in India. Together, these 20 countries represent two-thirds of the global population and 85% of the world economy. delegates from each nation get together several times a year to discuss world events. Tensions were high over the war in Ukraine, but leaders are also discussing the COVID pandemic and the high prices and inflation facing many nations.

In Canada, the women's national soccer team is fighting for fair pay. The players agreed to interim pay but are hoping to be paid the same rate that the men's team earned. A few weeks ago when the women's team threatened to strike the Canadian soccer organization told players they would sue if the players went on strike. March 8th is International Women's Day a day the UN celebrates each year to advance women's equality and equity. This year, the theme is innovation and technology for gender equality. The UN found that women make up only 22% of the AI workforce and that 44% of AI programs have gender biases, and 73% of Women Journalists have been victims of online violence while doing their jobs. Making digital spaces not only safe for women and girls but welcoming will change the future of technology. Let's do this.

Archaeologists are extremely excited because a never before seen tunnel has been found in the Great Pyramid in Egypt, one of the only surviving wonders of the world. People have been studying the Great Pyramid for hundreds of years, the tunnel was discovered using new technology that scans the interior of pyramids without needing to excavate or damage them. Egypt's former antiquities ministers that he has lost said the quarter may lead to the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu, the pharaoh who built the Great Pyramid. And paleontologists are also excited because a Jurassic-era bug was found at a Walmart in Arkansas. Why the giant lacewing is a species of insect that lived at the time of the Dinosaurs and hadn't been seen in North America for almost 60 years. A bug expert found the giant lacewing sitting on the side of Walmart in 2012, but only just realized what species the bug was.

Holi, the Hinduism Spring Festival of Colors, starts March 8th. The festival has ancient origins in India and celebrates the triumph of good over evil and the first harvest of spring during Holi. People throw colored powder and water on each other to celebrate and each color has a special meaning. Blue represents the Hindu God, Krishna, and green represents the return of spring. Cool. That was Ten Things You Need to Know.
