Hey, Ten'ers, do you love sports, wondering how March Madness is going? And why are some grownups trying to stop some kids from playing sports? Today we're grabbing our sneakers and tagging in. I'm Bethany Van Delft, it's Thursday, March 24th. And this is the Ten News.

The March Madness tournament is in full swing and Ten News correspondent LizaBanks Compagna has an update on the NCAA men's and women's college basketball tournaments.

March Madness has lived up to its name this year as the tournament has been jam-packed with major upsets buzzer-beaters and incredible underdog stories. St. Peter's from Jersey City, New Jersey pulled off one of the biggest upsets in March Madness history. They were seeded 15th and they beat number two seed Kentucky, what does that mean? Before the peacocks defeated Kentucky and yes, St. Peter's mascot is a peacock. Kentucky was expected to make it all the way to the Final Four. Not only did the peacocks win their first-ever NCAA Tournament game, but they also won their second game against Murray State. Now they're headed to the Sweet 16. The sweet 16 is the regional semi-finals of the tournament and will take place in Chicago, Philadelphia, San Antonio, and San Francisco. The games will be this Thursday and Friday and the teams that win we'll move on to the Elite Eight. The St Peter's peacocks are the official Cinderella team of the 2022 March Madness tournament. Except this Cinderella story includes a mustache instead of a missing glass slipper. Why Doug is one of the heroes of the St. Peter's team and their win over Kentucky has a fantastic mustache. That is actually the haircutting work of one of his teammates Matthew Lee. Matthew started cutting his teammate’s hair during the pandemic when barbershops were closed. And when he gave his teammate Doug a haircut in January. He decided to leave the mustache. Whatever Doug said he thought it was just going to be a temporary thing but after he dropped the career-high 20 points over number two Kentucky he said maybe the mustache is giving me powers sounds like a pretty magical mustache to me the stashes cash. Here's another fun fact about St. Peter's that puts into perspective how crazy their upset of Kentucky really is. St. Peter spends $1.6 million on funding for its basketball program every year. I know that sounds like a lot, but that's actually really low for a division one basketball program. But get this Kentucky, Kentucky spends $16.7 million a year on its men's basketball program. In financial terms that make the peacocks win the biggest upset in the history of March Madness like ever. On the gender equality front. The NCAA seems to be doing a better job leveling the playing field this year. Sedona Prince to the hall on our tick-tock of all the goodies gifted to her by the NCAA and made sure to note that the men's team got the exact same gifts as the women's team. Nice. While the NCAA did address the inequalities when it comes to swag and amenities for athletes at the tournament. Many are still calling for the NCAA to do a better job addressing the bigger issues at hand, like media coverage and exposure. Here is a rapid-fire round of all the other highlights from the tournament so far. Coach K and the Duke Blue Devils survived a scare from Michigan State and are headed to the Sweet 16 This is the last season for the legendary coach. So many are wondering how Duke will continue to perform with all the emotion surrounding Coach K's last dance. The Iowa women's basketball team lost a Creighton in a super tight game on Saturday after they were heavily favored to make it to the final floor. The player who hit the game-winner for Creighton, Laura Jensen, transferred to Creighton from Iowa last year. Awkward. The most exciting game so far was between TCU Frogs and Arizona Wildcats which went into overtime. The game went way past my bedtime late into Sunday night and Arizona ended up coming out on top. Let the madness continue.

Thanks, LizaBanks. Personally, I'm rooting for the Yankees. Wait, that's not a March Madness team. Anyway, I cannot wait to see how it all plays out. Do you know who else loves basketball? Kids! And Navi Huskey? Okay, what's that you said? Why is Navi Huskey a name to know? Because she is a trans nonbinary college basketball player, Ph.D. candidate, and activist. And right now, there are some grownups who want to make trans kids play on teams that align with the gender they were assigned at birth rather than their actual gender. Here are some important terms to know cisgender is the word for someone whose gender matches the gender they were assigned at birth. Transgender is a word for someone whose gender is not the same as the one they were assigned at birth. Some people mistakenly believe that trans girls have advantages over cisgender girls in sports but science has shown that that is not the case. There are many ways athletes can have advantages that have nothing to do with their physical traits. For example, if their families pay for private coaching. Wow. State legislators in Texas, Georgia, and Indiana along with dozens of other state representatives want to keep trans girls out of sports by passing laws that say trans girls have to compete with cisgender boys, but that subjects trans girls to unfair treatment and discrimination. Okay, that's bad. Plus, the Republican Indiana state senator who wrote the bill to protect cis girls’ opportunities in sports couldn't name a single cis girl athlete who missed out on an opportunity because of a trans athlete. Are you kidding me? And there you have it. If you want to stand up and support trans youth, check out the National Center for Transgender Equality. We've included a link in the show notes. Let's do this. Hey, Tessa, do you have a tidbit about basketball?
Rebecca 6:21
You're darn right. I do. I love basketball. And here's a wild fact. Did you know that slam dunks were once banned? That's right. The show-stopping basketball move wasn't allowed from 1967 through 1977. There was even a time when dribbling wasn't allowed. No way. Luckily the game we know today is full of dribbling and slam dunks. As for me, I'm a fan of layups.
Bethany Van Delft 6:53
And now, here to give us the news rundown is our head writer Ryan Willard.
Ryan Willard 7:05
Thank you, Bethany. The building has been removed from fortnight for at least the first nine days of chapter three season two of the hit game. The building mechanic is not in battle royale public matches. Epic Games has also added in tactical sprinting and mantling though it's unclear how long these features will last. So if you see a player named ride will at tilted towers run away, just bring, trust me run away. On Tuesday, March 22nd, Disney employees staged a day-long walkout to boycott their company's response or lack thereof to Florida's don't say gay bill which would restrict discussion of LGBTQ issues in classrooms statewide. The walkout organizers representing Disney's LGBTQ community have demanded that Disney immediately and indefinitely stop all campaign contributions to all politicians involved in the creation of the passage of the bill to go. According to NASA, we now have more than 5000 confirmed planets beyond our solar system. NASA added 65 new planets to the NASA exoplanet archive, which is an archive where exoplanet discoveries from peer-reviewed scientific papers have been confirmed using multiple methods of detecting the planets. We know very, very little about the 5000 confirmed planets, but I'm hopeful that we're one step closer to discovering which planet our editor Pete Musto is actually from. I'm from Earth, Ryan. I'm an Earthling. That's exactly what a Martian would say. Be. Back to you, Bethany.
Bethany Van Delft 8:42
What's that over there? I think it's...
Sound Bit 8:44
What, what, what's the big idea?
Bethany Van Delft 8:48
Trivia on the Ten. Same as all athletes, trans athletes excel in many different sports. Chris Mosier is the first trans athlete to join Team USA as the gender he identifies with rather than the gender he was assigned at birth. But can you guess his sport? Is it a) the men's sprint duathlon, b) the men's 100-meter hurdles or c) the men's pole vault? Did you guess it? The answer is A. Although he certainly had to jump hurdles in order to compete Chris Mosier represented Team USA as a men's sprint to f1 athlete in the 2016 world championships. And he founded transathlete.com, a website that supports trans athletes. Chris also heads up Go Athletes, an organization for LGBTQ+ folks in sports. Excellent. Time's up, but before we go, here's a quick note for the grownups.
