When underdogs become heroes, the crowd goes wild. Today we're talking about some of the GOATS of sports movies, not goats. GOATS, greatest of all time, and racing off the field to tell you which ones we think are the greatest of all time. I'm Bethany Van Delft. It's Saturday, January 8th, and this is no ordinary episode of the Ten News. This is the Ten News Gets Extra.

Bethany Van Delft  0:41

First things first, Ten News snaps to Steph Curry, the pro basketball player who broke the record for most three-pointers. Steph plays for the Golden State Warriors and on Tuesday, December 14th, he scored the 2,974th three-pointer of his career!

Sound Bit  1:01

Steph, three, there it is! NBA three-point history. Stephen Curry stands alone as the most dominant distance shooter the game has ever seen.

Bethany Van Delft  1:12

And on January 2nd, he broke another record, his own. He broke the record for most consecutive three-pointers in NBA history. In order to do it, he scored three-pointers in 158 games in a row. Steph’s been playing in the NBA for 13 years and has been the most valuable player twice. And it's looking like this year he could be MVP again. They should make a movie about Steph Curry because who doesn't love a good sports movie? The music, the montage is the magic in the sports. And now here's Ten News correspondent Kenny Curtis with our top 10 sports movies to warm your heart on a cold January weekend.

Kenny Curtis  2:03

What's the best part of winter? Is it the snow, the cozy vibes, the hot chocolate, the extra screen time? Yep, one of the greatest things about winter is the opportunity to cozy up and watch some movies with the whole family. And because we're big sports fans, we've compiled a list of sports movies that are perfect for everyone to enjoy. So, in no particular order. Here are our top 10 sports movies to watch in the wintertime. Number one, Remember the Titans.

Sound Bit  2:37

When you put that uniform on, that Titan uniform, you better come to work.

Kenny Curtis  2:41

This iconic film is based on the true story of the 1971 Virginia football team from TC Williams High School. It's an important story that extends far beyond sports touching on our country's history of racism and segregation. It's a must-watch for all families and could serve as a good conversation starter about important topics that are still going on in today's world. And of course, it's got plenty of football streaming now on Disney Plus. Next, Air Bud, there's not much better than a cute dog who can play sports. The Air Bud movies are perfect for any sports fan who just happens to be a pet lover. Now the original movie Air Bud is all about a golden retriever who dominates on the basketball court. I mean seriously, that dog can make more free throws than I can. Of course, that's not saying much but still, the additional movies focus on other sports, like football and baseball, and soccer. You can rent Air Bud now on Amazon. Number three, Bend It Like Beckham.

Sound Bit  3:47

Where do you normally play? In the park? I mean what position Oh sorry, I usually play all over. But upfront.

Kenny Curtis  3:52

This film has it all. A romance, a family drama, and girls kicking butt on the soccer field. Jess is a talented soccer player but her family doesn't support her dream and would prefer that she spend her time on things that are more quote, lady-like. She's torn between making her family proud and following her dreams to become a professional soccer player. You can watch this one now on Disney Plus. Next, The Blind Side.

Sound Bit  4:19

This team is your family Michael You have to protect them from those guys.

Kenny Curtis  4:23

Now, this is the true-life story of how NFL outside linebacker Michael Ore managed to become a professional football player against all odds. This story of family faith and football is as inspiring as it is entertaining. And it was even nominated for Best Motion Picture of the Year when it debuted in 2010. You can stream it now on HBO. Number five, the Mighty Ducks. Who doesn't love a good underdog story? The Mighty Ducks is all about a struggling kids ice hockey team. Under the direction of a new coach, he manages to go on a winning streak. The whole series is great, but the original Mighty Ducks is a must-watch. Stream it now on Disney Plus, Next Soul Surfer.

Sound Bit  5:13

You get tired of waiting for the waves out there. Take it with us. We don't have to wait for the action. But when you get tired of hype, come surf some real waves.

Kenny Curtis  5:20

Based on the true story of American surfer Bethany Hamilton. This movie is an epic tale of perseverance and redemption. After losing her arm in a near-fatal shark attack, Bethany refuses to give up surfing. She continues to train as she finds new meaning and purpose in her life as a result of the accident. This movie is inspiring, exciting, and filled with brilliant surfing scenes. You can run it now on Amazon. Number seven, The Sand Lot.

Sound Bit  5:51

It was signed by Babe Ruth. You keep telling me that, but who is she? Babe Ruth!

Kenny Curtis  6:01

A classic coming-of-age tale perfect for family movie night. It's the story of a young baseball team who gets into a series of wild adventures, some of which involve a gigantic dog, appropriately named the Beast. This group of misfit kids has a lot of different personalities, but they all have one thing in common. A love for baseball, streaming now on Disney Plus. Number eight, A League of Their Own. There's no crying in baseball. This classic movie tells the story of the first female professional baseball league, starring great actors like Tom Hanks, Gina Davis, and Rosie O'Donnell. It's an empowering take on women's athletics. It's fun. It's got great baseball, and it highlights amazing women athletes who played an important part in American history. You can rent this one on Amazon. Number nine, the Karate Kid.

Sound Bit  7:02

Sweep the leg. Do you have a problem with that? No mercy.

Kenny Curtis  7:08

Okay, we couldn't make the best of the sports movies list without the Karate Kid. It's a classic, both the original and the reboot with Jaden Smith. Another underdog story. This film teaches kids patience, resilience, and how to stand up to bullies. You can rent it on Amazon now. And lastly, Cool Runnings. A perfect film to get you in the mood for the Winter Olympics. This movie is all about a bobsledding team from Jamaica. Despite never having seen snow. The team trains hard to make it all the way to the Olympics. And once they're there, they make their mark on the rest of the world. True story streaming now on Disney Plus. And there you have it. Just a few of the many sports movies that you can watch this winter. Now, these movies are all good for families in general, but grownups might want to check the rating information, especially if you have younger kids watching. And if you decide to watch one, do us a favor and let us know what you think. Are there any sports movies we missed? That should have made the list? Let us know. We would love to hear from you. Until then pass the popcorn and the hot chocolate and maybe some of those little marshmallows. I love those.

Bethany Van Delft  8:29

Thanks, Kenny. Now that we've covered our must-see classic sports movies, let's get pumped for some new releases. In theaters right now. The movie 83 celebrates India's unexpected 1983 win in the Cricket World Cup. Whether you're a fan of cricket or not, or don't even know that much about the sport you will appreciate this story of victory against all odds. Also currently in theaters is the new movie American Underdog. It's based on a true story of quarterback Kurt Warner and the challenges he faced on the way to becoming a football hall of Famer touchdown, and later this month Home Team comes out his Super Bowl-winning NFL Coach returns to his hometown and starts coaching his son's Pop Warner league team. It's inspired by New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton. Did you know The Monster wrestling movie Rumble stars real wrestlers no way WWE performers Roman Reigns and Becky Lynch are wrestlers who play monsters? I guess the filmmakers were unable to teach monsters to play wrestlers. All right, it's time for...

Various Voices  9:49

What, what, what's the big idea?

Trivia on the Ten. The Winter Olympics are coming up later in 2022 Yay. Which winter sport was discontinued from the Olympics? Is it a) curling b) skeleton or c) ski ballet Did you guess it? The answer is c) Ski ballet. Also known as acro-ski, was featured at the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992 but was discontinued after that. Ski Ballet looks a little like figure skating but on skis with flips, jumps, and dance moves. Maybe TikTok dancers and skaters can work together to bring back ski ballet. As for curling and skeleton, you'll see those two sports this year the Winter Olympics. Curling is a team sport played on ice where players push a stone weight, brushing the ice ahead of the stone skeleton is a head-first sledding sport. Athletes can reach speeds of over 90 miles per hour. I hope they have helmets made of Vibranium. Time is up, but before we go, here's a quick note for the grownups. Thanks for listening to the Ten News. Look out for our new episodes on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and extras on Saturdays. The Ten News is a coproduction of Small But Mighty Media and Next Chapter Podcasts and is distributed by iHeartRadio. The news creative team is practicing their ski ballet and includes Tracey Crooks, Pete Musto, Adam Barnard, Tessa Flannery, and Nathalie Alonso. Kenny Curtis contributed to this episode. Our production director is Jeremiah Tittle and our executive producers are Donald Albright and show creator Tracy Leeds Kaplan. I'm Bethany Van Delft, and thanks for listening to the Ten News. Can I be honest about something? I don't get curling, but I love watching curling. In fact, I think I'd be pretty good at sweeping the ice in front of the thingamajigger over there.
