Hey Ryan, what generation are you?
Ryan Willard 0:03
Um, I believe I'm a millennial. Right? I think, are you?
Bethany Van Delft 0:07
Actually um, generation, nunya... nunya business! Aha. Most of our Ten'ers are alphas or Gen Z. A lot of their parents are Xennials or Gen X.
Ryan Willard 0:21
What the... what is a Xennial and an alpha?
Bethany Van Delft 0:24
I am so glad you asked. Because today we're breaking down generations. We're gonna go over the who's who and the what's what? I'm Bethany Van Delft. It's Thursday, April 28th. And this is the Ten News.

What is a generation? And how do they affect every person on the planet? Ten News correspondent Sarah Namias is here with the answers.

Try to imagine life without cell phones, without Tiktok, Netflix, or without your favorite Ten News podcast available anytime you want it. It's hard to imagine because this is just the world as you know it. Have you ever tried to explain Tiktok to a grandparent, I don't even know what that means, or heard someone much older than you start a story with "back in my day", or "well, when I was a kid", cue the eye roll right. But when you stopped to think about it, the year in which you were born plays a big part in shaping your personality, your interests, and your outlook on things. In short, the year you were born defines what generation you're grouped into. A generation is defined as an entire group of people born and living at approximately the same moment in time. The span of a generation is deemed to be somewhere between 20 and 30 years. Ten'ers, did you know that you're likely part of generation alpha? What does that mean? That means you were born sometime around or after the year 2010. It's like being a member of your own special club. No parents allowed! Cool. That's because your parents are part of a generation of their own. If they were born between 1981 and 1996, then they're part of the millennial generation also known as Generation Y. Or, if they're a tad older and born between 1965 and 1980 then their Generation X. I for one am grouped into a neat little microgeneration known as Accentenials. Born between 1977 and 1983. My generation is described as having an analog childhood, meaning the internet didn't exist when we were kids. Oh. And we were thrust into digital adulthood. So we were the first kids to have computers in our houses as high schoolers. The first to use email, Facebook and so many other tech luxuries that we take for granted today. Every generation shares a unique bond that's formed by common experiences and attitudes. How each generation sees the world around them has a lot to do with what was going on in the world when they were growing up. Your grandparents are likely grouped into the generation known as the boomers, people born between 1946 and 1964. Time hostilities must say Germany and Britain would be at war. This generation was born in the aftermath of World War II. And the name boomers was given because of the huge baby boom that happened after the war ended. The Boomer generation had a front-row seat to many defining chapters in history, including the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, the dawn of television, and so much more. That's incredible for you tenors of generation alpha, the influence of social media, advances in technology, and even the impact of Covid are all things that will undoubtedly define your generation. So, someday you too can be that old person saying, "well, when I was a kid, we made silly videos of ourselves and posted them for everyone to see."
Bethany Van Delft 4:18
No matter what generation you are, you probably know science technology, engineering, arts and math, aka STEAM subjects are the future. A new Netflix show based on the book Ada Twist Scientist is making STEAM fun for everyone. And guess what? I got to sit down with Kerri Grant the showrunner of Ada Twist in the studio, so exciting. What's a typical day like for you?
Kerri Grant 4:55
What's cool about this job is no day is typical. So, some days it's crazy busy and I'm doing a million things like I'm working on stories with the writing team or giving notes on scripts. Sometimes we're in record sessions and that's just recording the voice actors who are playing the roles. Sometimes I'm listening to auditions. So, no day is typical and that makes it really exciting.
Bethany Van Delft 5:20
Ada Twist is super curious. What are you most curious about?
Kerri Grant 5:25
So, I'm curious about a lot of stuff. But I would say I think a lot about the existence of alternate universes, and if it's real.
Bethany Van Delft 5:35
Yeah, can we be best friends? Oh my gosh, that was so cool. Ten'ers, you can hear the rest of my interview with Kerri on Saturday. Tessa, have you got any fun facts about the various generations?
Tessa Flannery 5:56
You know it, Bethany. Here's something that might make Ten'ers smile. Your generation, generation alpha, is expected to be the best-educated and wealthiest generation. Excellent. So enjoy that!
Bethany Van Delft 6:10
Nice. I know who will be taking care of us. And now, here to give us the news rundown is our head writer Ryan Willard.
Ryan Willard 6:28
What up, Ten'ers? Elon Musk is buying Twitter. Musk, the CEO of both Tesla and SpaceX is the richest person in the world according to Forbes magazine, and just used some of his wealth to purchase the social media platform for $44 billion. Musk has stated that he believes Twitter has quote tremendous potential and called for changes including relaxing its content restrictions, eradicating bots and fake accounts, and verifying all humans on the platform. Ten'ers, do you want us to do a bigger story on this topic? If so, go to thetennews.com and let us know. Let's do this. A Gaza farmer found a 4500-year-old statue. The farmer was digging in his backyard in Coneunice, Palestine when he found the statue. Palestinian archaeologists say that the limestone statue is the head of Canaanite Deity Anat and is wearing a serpent crown and it dates back 4500 years to the late bronze age. The statue of Anat is now on display in Kasur Alba Shaw's historic building that serves as one of Gaza's few museums. That's great. And now to the present day, two sequels to the animated film Spider-Man into the spider-verse will be coming in the next two years. Spider-Man across the spider verse will be released in June of 2023. And the third film in the trilogy will be Spider-Man beyond the spider-verse, which will be released sometime in 2024. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller called it the biggest animated film ever with 1000 people working on it. The trilogy will take place across six dimensions and will have 240 characters in it. I know it's animated, but I can't help but wonder, will Tom Holland pop up in this trilogy? I don't think we'll know until we see the film. So we've got a while until we find out if anything. It's kind of your fault that I'm here. I'm Ryan. And that's your rundown. Back to you, Bethany.

Trivia on the Ten. Now you know a little bit about the different generations. So, it's time for a trivia question. Which generation was shaped by the Great Recession? Is it a) Gen X, b) Millennials or c) Boomers? Did you guess it? The answer is b. The 2007 economic downturn caused a worldwide recession starting in 2009.
Sound Bit 8:56
Major financial institutions have teetered on the edge of collapse. Credit markets have frozen and families and businesses have found it harder to borrow money. We're in the midst of a serious financial crisis.
Bethany Van Delft 9:07
That happened just as millennials were entering the workforce. The recession meant fewer jobs and fewer savings. Things are looking up for millennials now. They're the most likely to be opening businesses and saving for a home or another goal. Way to go. Time's up. But before we go, Mother's Day is coming up. Do you want to be on our episode?
