Hello, hi. You ain't nothing but a hound dog, crying all the time. It's time for the summer movies takeover and Elvis is here. And all you hound dogs got to watch the Elvis movie.
Pete Musto 0:19
Sorry, not sorry, to interrupt you, Tessa, but if you look out the studio window you will see me coming in hot.
Tessa Flannery 0:27
Good gravy, Pete, Did you just fly by in a jet pack?
Pete Musto 0:31
That's an affirmative. Tessa, if we're talking about summer movies, we need to talk about the Buzz Lightyear film. So I'm gonna take over just like Buzz would.
Ryan Willard 0:41
Enough. It is I, Ry. And my mighty hammer mule, says the only movie that is worthy is Thor: Love and Thunder. So, I shall be the one to take over today.
Pete Musto 0:55
Pete light years here, and we're doing it my way.
Ryan Willard 0:59
Well then, I guess there's only one way to settle this. Minions, tickle fight them!
Pete Musto 1:08
What? Minions?
Ryan Willard 1:14
Great, now that that's settled, let's talk about the summer movie season because I am hyped. I'm Ryan Willard filling in for Bethany Van Delft. It's Tuesday, May 31st. And this is the Ten News.

You want to hear something crazy? Back in the day, people used to go to the store to rent movies. And when Netflix first came along, they would send movies through the mail not email your physical mailbox. Nowadays, streaming seems to be the new normal. But Do people still want to go to the movie theaters? Is it still a thing? Ten News correspondent Sarah Namias is here to break down streaming versus theaters.
Sarah Namias 1:59
I don't know about you. But going to the movies is one of my all-time favorite things to do. Settling into your seat hoping no one blocks your view of the giant screen. The lights dim the sound surrounds you, you shovel handfuls of popcorn and candy into your mouth. And for the next two hours, you're transported to another world. But in the time of COVID, our living rooms have become our theaters, and the only popcorn we've been shoveling has likely been popped in a microwave. This is all thanks to the big movie studios and streaming sites like Disney plus Netflix and others scrambling to keep up with the changing times. Hollywood studios have typically relied on big theatrical releases to score box office gold. Basically, they make millions sometimes billions of dollars when people buy tickets at the movie theaters. But with audiences largely staying home, the model for delivering movie magic to the masses, and cashing in on them is changing. Disney Animation Studios recent hit and Konto was in theaters for 30 days, but only found true success once it's streamed on Disney plus, and people could watch it from the comfort of their couches. With the realization that people haven't been as keen on going to the movies, Hollywood has brought more and more of them straight to us. But this isn't always welcome to News. When Disney announced that its recent Pixar movie turning red would premiere exclusively on Disney plus, it was reported that many who worked on the movie were saddened and frustrated that their hard work wouldn't be shown on the big screen. But now with summer approaching and COVID restrictions lifting Hollywood is once again listening to audience demands, and bringing some pretty big blockbusters to the theaters. And there's something for everyone. Whether it's the latest Minions movie, Marcel the Shell with shoes on Pixar is Lightyear, or the much anticipated Jurassic World dominion. And of course, there's plenty for superhero fans to cheer about with Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Thor: Love and Thunder. So, what about you? Will you be running to the theater this summer? Or do you enjoy watching a new movie snuggled up on your couch? If you're looking for me, I'll be at the theater with a bucket of buttery popcorn and m&ms. Have you ever tried mixing those by the way? Give it a try. You'll thank me later.
Ryan Willard 4:35
Thanks, Sarah. If I spent a year working on a film, I would definitely want to see it in theaters. And I know streaming is more accessible. Ah, it's real quandary. I love going to see big blockbuster movies in the summer. I could talk about them all day. If you're wondering what to watch this summer. We've got you covered. The podcaster known as Son from the Middle School Mind is here to tell us all about where he wants to watch. We don't know his real name, because that's what he goes by on his podcast. What up, Son?
Son 5:04
What up, Ryan? First off, thank you for having me. Secondly, I want to see Chris Pratt team up with the original casting of Jurassic Park, while he saves a baby velociraptor.
Ryan Willard 5:13
Wait, are you talking about Jurassic World Dominion? Don't the dinosaurs invade our world in that one?
Son 5:19
Yeah, it's going to be awesome.
Ryan Willard 5:22
No, that's not cool. Dinosaurs don't like humans. This is not going to end with waterslides and cupcakes.
Son 5:28
Take it easy. It's just a movie. You can still have both after you watch it.
Ryan Willard 5:35
Okay, well, I can't wait for DC League of Super-Pets. It's an animated film with all our favorite DC superheroes except it's about their pets.
Son 5:45
What kind of super pet would you want, Ryan? I'd want a flying dog so I can fly around with my best friend.
Ryan Willard 5:52
Ooh, flying dog. That is a good choice. I'd go with a teleporting dolphin because it could take me to every beach in the world.
Son 5:58
Nice. Next on my list. Oh, hey, Buddy. Yeah, I was just about to leave. Okay, yeah. I'm clearly not the only one excited about Minions: The Rise of Gru. You get to see Gru as a kid, and when he gets kidnapped the minions have to save him.
Ryan Willard 6:19
Ah, yeah, that does sound cool, right, my little minions? Now, go raid the snack room and pretend it's an all-you-can-eat buffet. The Toy Story movies are some of my absolute favorites. But, now we're getting Lightyear, a movie all about the person that Buzz Lightyear was based on. And Chris Evans aka Captain America is Buzz? Yes to the please! Hey, Son. How far would you go to see that movie?
Son 6:47
To infinity and beyond! Okay, last but certainly not least is the movie I'm most hyped about Thor: Love and Thunder. Thor is traveling the universe with the Guardians of the Galaxy. When his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster shows up, she might be the new Mighty Thor!
Ryan Willard 7:07
That will be so awesome, dude. And, Tycho YTT is directing it he directed Thor Ragnarok and is also directing the new Star Wars film. He's like my favorite director in Hollywood right now. I am so hyped.
Son 7:19
I already got my tickets for it. Do you want to come, Ryan?
Ryan Willard 7:23
Obviously, but after we finished the show.
Son 7:26
Cool. Sounds good. I'll go get some snacks.
Ryan Willard 7:29
Well, thanks for stopping by Son. Son hosts the Middle School Mind podcast with his dad. And now here to give you a special movie rundown is someone who actually worked in a movie theater, and she also happens to be the creator of the Ten News, Tracy Leeds Kaplan.
Tracy Kaplan 7:45
I did work in a movie theater. My job was at the concession stand selling popcorn and candy. The best part was seeing lots of movies for free. So let's talk movies. I'm Tracy Leeds Kaplan and this is your rundown. Fantastic Beasts: The Secret of Dumbledore is now streaming on HBO Max. The third film and the Harry Potter spin-off explores Dumbledore's untold past as he teams up with Newt Scamander to battle against the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. The Secrets of Dumbledore was originally released in theaters on April 15th. And the wait to watch it at home is now over. Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has made over $800 million at the global box office, the Marvel and Disney movie became the second highest-grossing film since the start of the pandemic, and pass the previous movie leaders, the Batman and the James Bond movie, No Time to Die. Congratulations, Dr. Strange. The director of Turning Red has been promoted at Pixar. After the success of Turning Red, Domee Shi, a Chinese-Canadian filmmaker was promoted to be a vice president and will guide Pixar directors as they work on her own projects. I love Turning Red, so I can't wait to see what she does in her new leadership role at Pixar. I'm Tracy Leeds Kaplan and that is your movie rundown. Back to you, Ryan.
Ryan Willard 9:07
And, now it's time for Trivia on the Ten. There are a bunch of sequels coming this summer. It's so awesome to revisit beloved characters, but do you know which famous Pixar sequel almost didn't make it to theaters? Is it a) Cars 2 b) Monsters University or c) Toy Story 2? Did you guess it the answer is c) Toy Story 2. Right when the animators were finishing the movie, important files were accidentally deleted and the backup system didn't work. All their hard work seemed lost but Supervising Technical Director, Galen Sussman was home on maternity leave and had copies of all of the files at her house. Toy Story 2 was saved and Sussman is a producer on this summer's Toy Story spin-off last year. That's all for our summer movie takeover. But before we go, here's a quick note for the grownups. Thanks for listening to the Ten News. Look out for our new episodes on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and extras on Saturdays. The Ten News is a coproduction of Small But Mighty Media and Next Chapter Podcasts and is distributed by iHeartRadio. Sarah Namias has contributed to this episode. Our production director is Jeremiah Tittle. And our executive producers are Donald Albright and show creator Tracy Leeds Kaplan. I'm Ryan Willard, and thank you for listening to the Ten News. Wait, has anyone seen my hammer? Y'all know me? Oh. Oh, come on. Hey, Tessa. Have you seen the hammer?
