INT. TEN NEWS STUDIO

RYAN: Serious question, Pamela.

PAM: I’m ready, Ry.

RYAN: Would you rather wrestle a kangaroo, or be lost in New York like Kevin from the Home Alone movies?

PAM: Well I certainly don’t ever want to wrestle a kangaroo.

RYAN: I thought you’d say that, so I might know a way for you to relive a Home Alone movie…

PAM: Okay, I’m all ears. I’m Pamela Kirkland.

RYAN: And I’m Ryan Willard. It’s Tuesday, December 12th.

PAM: This is Ten Things You Need to Know.

Pam: Happy Tuesday, Ten’ers, we’ve got a lot to cover this week so let’s hop right in! First up, Durham Regional Police Service received an unusual call from a member of the public claiming they had seen a kangaroo hopping around in Ohsawa, Canada. Sure enough, a kangaroo on the run had escaped while being transferred between zoos. Officers were soon dispatched to safely capture the animal and briefed to ‘grab it by its tail’ as the best way to subdue the kangaroo. Officers were able to grab the female kangaroo but she didn’t go down without a fight. After punching one of the officers in the face, the kangaroo peacefully surrendered and was put into a K9 kennel where she was transferred back to the zoo.

Ryan: From one rescue to another, the Pacific Northwest was left under flooded waters after a massive atmospheric river storm drenched the region. Last Wednesday, the storm brought record rains and caused widespread river flooding that prompted several dangerous rescues. Including a man who was rescued by the Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue crew from the Skykomish River, which is known for whitewater rafting. They found him in the evening, in a small aluminum boat without paddles or a headlamp. After a failed rope rescue attempt, the man was able to scramble near shore where the crew was able to grab him from the rushing waters. We always love hearing about successful rescue missions in the news.

Pam: Meanwhile, Ukraine’s US help seems to be slipping away. Several weeks ago, President Joe Biden asked Congress for $60 billion in aid to support Kyiv’s weaponry lifeline, in addition to $14 billion in support of Israel. But, the aid package remains stalled in Congress and leaves the White House issuing warnings about the critical situation and states that a vote against supporting Ukraine benefits Russian President, Vladimir Putin. This comes as the U.S. government is trying to figure out how to keep helping Ukraine while also balancing the support for other problems happening in the U.S., as well as in Israel.

Ryan: Now for some National Day news! Did you know that today is National Gingerbread House Day AND National Gingerbread Decorating Day!? Gingerbread baking is one of the oldest holiday traditions that began in Europe and eventually evolved from just baking, into painting and decorating. But, instead of houses, at first the gingerbreads were used as window decor! Baking and decorating gingerbread is traditionally done leading up to Christmas and is a holiday tradition for children and grown-ups around the world. Some ways you can celebrate today is by decorating gingerbread cookies or building gingerbread houses, and even making a contest out of your activity!

Pam: Up next, we have another holiday activity for all of you ‘Home Alone’ movie fans out there. The Plaza Hotel is offering a ‘Home Alone 2’ package to run around New York City just like Kevin McCallister! The package is called, ‘Home Alone 2: Fun in New York’ and includes a stay at the Plaza Hotel with a four-hour private limousine ride around NYC to ‘Home Alone 2’ filming locations, a large cheese pizza to eat along the way, and a ‘Home Alone’ sundae for dessert. In order to receive the package, you have to book at least 3 days prior to your stay and directly though the Plaza, plus it has to be a new reservation. Don’t worry though, if the package sells out for the holidays, you and your family can still live out the “Home Alone” holiday magic year-round.

Ryan: Time for a quick break for the grown-ups and then we’ll be back with the word of the year and penguins!

Pam: We’re back from the break and Taylor Swift has done it AGAIN! The pop star has been named Time’s (and seemingly everyone else’s) 2023 Person of the Year! She came out on top against quite the pool of finalists that included Barbie and the recently crowned King Charles III. In addition to Time Person of the Year, Taylor Swift was also named Most Intriguing Person of the Year by People and ranks number 1 on the Forbes’ world’s most powerful women in media and entertainment.

Ryan: ‘Swift’ was also in the running for Oxford’s 2023 word of the year but didn’t quite make the cut. Instead, ‘Rizz’ took the number 1 spot, a term that describes a person’s ability to attract a romantic partner through their style, charm, or attractiveness. ‘Rizz’ was selected from a list of eight different words after receiving over 32,000 public votes. You may have also heard the term from Spider-Man actor, Tom Holland, when he used the phrase, ‘rizz up’. What do you think the 2023 word of the year should have been? Let us know your answers by giving us a call and leaving a voice note at 877-TEN-NEWS!

Pam: We have two more big wins to share with you this week but first let’s take a look at some animal s-news (snooze). A new study published by the journal Science, shows that Nesting Chinstrap Penguins take more than 10,000 mini naps per day. Each nap lasts for about 4 seconds and allows the arctic penguins to catch up on nearly 11 hours of sleep while still watching over their chicks. Researchers from multiple countries, led by the Neuroscience Research Center of Lyon in France, conducted the study by breeding chinstrap penguins and using an EEG monitor to detect the animals brain activity. These penguin parents seem to have it all figured out!

Ryan: Your grown-ups know that college can cost a lot of money, sometimes. But, when the time comes you do have the opportunity to apply for scholarships, or in some cases win a $100,000 scholarship by throwing a football into a giant Dr. Pepper can. During the halftime of the Texas vs. Oklahoma State game, college students Gavin White of Ohio State and Ryan Georgian of Penn competed in Dr. Pepper’s annual halftime contest for their chance to win. While Georgian appeared to win after a second tie breaker, fans took to social media about a scoring error that occurred in the first round where White should have won. After all of the controversy, Dr. Pepper decided to recognize both finalists as grand prize winners and they both received the $100,000 toward tuition.

Pam: And, for our last win of the day, after 65 years Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’ has finally been named No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was written by Johnny Marks who is also known for ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’ and ‘A Holly Jolly Christmas’, and sung by Brenda Lee when it was first released during the Eisenhower administration in 1958. To celebrate the song's 65th anniversary, Brenda Lee (who also celebrated her 79th birthday on Sunday!!) recorded “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’s” first official music video, that has also become a recent hit on TikTok with 8 million views and counting!

RYAN: That was Ten Things You Need to Know.

PAM: Check out Thursday’s episode where we’re doing our Secret Friend Holiday Gift Exchange!

RYAN: That’s on Thursday?

PAM: Yup! Did you get a gift for your secret friend yet?

RYAN: C’mon Pam. I would NEVER forget something like that. I’m Ryan Willard.

PAM: And I’m Pamela Kirkland. Thanks for listening to the Ten News!
