TRANSCRIPT:

INT. TEN NEWS STUDIO

RYAN: Pam, you’re telling me: you don’t hear Tuesday.

<SFX Meow>

PAM: I heard her. I love that she’s a Tuxedo cat.

TUESDAY: Mr. Ryan. Why aren’t you celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act?

RYAN: I-I-I don’t know a lot about the Endangered Species Act, why should I celebrate its 50th anniversary?

PAM: That’s a great question, Ry! Endangered Species Day is actually the third Friday in May…BUT, There’s a podcast party right now celebrating the Endangered Species Act 50th anniversary! We did a podcast party last year. It's when we get together with our favorite podcasts to talk about a topic and this year.  Our friends over at Wow in the World have a fun episode about Orangutans! And now back to The Endangered Species Act, or the ESA, it provides a program for the conservation of threatened or endangered plants and animals and the habitats in which they are found.

RYAN: So it basically helps to make sure plants, animals and their habitats don’t go extinct? Aka wiped from existence?

PAM: Yup, and the Endangered Species Act has a stellar success rate: 99% of species listed on it have avoided extinction! Let me get Ryan Nerz, he loves to talk about this stuff!

<SFX: Calling Ryan Nerz >

PAM: Hey Ryan

PAM: Yup we are doing a podcast party. Can you tell us about Endangered Species? I’m going to put you on speaker.

RYAN: It’s nice to hear good news about endangered species, thank you Ryan Nerz. Talk to you later!

TUESDAY: I love your name, other Mr. Ryan!

RYAN: Yeah, he really does have a great name. One animal that Ryan Nerz mentioned that I LOVE, is the Delmarva fox squirrel. Thanks to conservation, it was removed from the endangered species list in 2015. The Delmarva fox squirrel can grow up to 30 inches long and weigh up to 3 pounds and it’s bushy tail can reach 15 inches in length! It’s a subspecies of fox squirrels which are the largest tree squirrels in the western hemisphere. My favorite fact about the Delmarva fox squirrel is that it can use it’s bushy tail as a blanket to wrap around itself during cold weather!

TUESDAY: Mr. Ryan, please may I have another treat?

RYAN: You’ve had enough treats for today, Tuesday.

TUESDAY: WHAT! Well I guess I’ll just have to find them myself.

PAM: We love animals here at the Ten News. We’re celebrating the Endangered Species Act, it makes us think of all the animals that are close to home for you. And I know some of you Ten’ers might want to be veterinarians when you grow up, so I sat down with Shelby Carter; she’s studying to be one and is a Banfield Pet Hospital NextVet Intern!

SHELBY: My name is Shelby Carter. Um, I'm a sophomore on the pre veterinary track at Duke University. Um, and I was part of Banfield Pet Hospital's Class of 2023 of Next Vet interns. I've honestly pretty much spent my entire life wanting to be a veterinarian. Um, I've really never considered anything else. Um, I know that's, that's odd or unusual. Um, but from the time I was a child, I was really just drawn to animals. Um, my bond with [00:00:30] animals was... It's just innate. Like, it just feels like second nature to me. Um, yeah, and this summer I had the opportunity to be a Next Vet Intern, which is a really amazing program, um, that's tailored to the next generation of veterinarians.

PAM: That's very cool. And when you're passionate about something, it feels less like a job and more like you get to do something that you enjoy. So you told us a little bit about the NextVet program. Can you tell us a little bit about what you did as a NextVet intern?

SHELBY: I was matched with Banfield's Uptown. which is the Banfield in New York City in Manhattan. Um, and what's unique about being filled up tap is that I was actually able to work under a black female veterinarian and a black female practice manager. It was truly just a unique opportunity to be a part of a team of passionate and driven individuals who. Also understand the particular experience of being of being a black woman in the industry. Um, and in particular, the doctor I worked [00:02:30] with, Dr. Mark Lee, um, was incredibly inspiring. Um, and you know, the significance of having a mentor and leader who looks like you really just cannot be overstated. I know my inner child is absolutely floored to be able to work this closely with a veterinarian who looks like me and who is also so willing to help foster my growth in this field that I've pretty much been preparing my entire life to enter.

PAM: Ok, last thing Shelby. Since you are a student, we’re going to give you a little quiz. I’m going to play an animal sound and you are going to guess it. First one…

Shelby: Okay. I'm excited about this one

SFX: Cow

Shelby: I know that one, that was a cow.

Pam: Next one..

SFX: Moose

Shelby: I think it's some sort,

Shelby: it's some sort of farm animal. Is it like a sheep? Goat?

Pam: A moose!

Shelby: A moose? Really?!

PAM: Ok, last one.

SFX: Hyena

Shelby: One more time.

SFX: Hyena

Shelby: It's some sort of bird.

Shelby: Like a monkey?

Oh, is that, is it a hyena?

Shelby: I hear it. I hear the laughter.

PAM: Thank you Shelby for playing our quiz today.

Shelby: Thank you so much for having me. This was a lot of fun for me.

PAM: Hopefully a moose won’t be coming into the pet hospital anytime soon! Before you go, I think you need to check out the Trivia room…

<SFX Trivia Room door opens>

<SFX shiny sparkly magical>

OWEN: Welcome to the Trivia Room <SFX Booming voice>

SHELBY:  Oh you must be Owen. I’ve heard about this Trivia Room and I’m excited to be here.

OWEN: Yes! And today, you get an extra special treat. Midnight, The Ten News cat is here too and willing to sit on your lap and help you out with today’s trivia. Ready?

SHELBY: <Midnight meows>

OWEN: We’ve talked about a lot of different animal species today, and yes Midnight, felines are my favorite, but do you know how many different animal species scientists estimate exist in the world?

OWEN: Is it:

  1. 1-2 Million

  2. 8-9 Million or

  3. 1 Billion!

OWEN: <SFX drumroll> The answer is B, 8-9 Million species. Scientists estimate that there are over 8.7 Million species in the world and have only discovered 1.2 Million of them. That leaves a lot more to learn about! A mini fun fact for the Ten’ers, my favorite animal species isn't even an animal, it's the Argentine ant, one of the smallest ants yet holding the biggest territory in the world.

OWEN: Thanks for joining us Shelby! <Midnight meows> And you too Midnight.

<sfx shimmer/shine fades and door closes> <SFX cat steps> <SFX cat meow>

TUESDAY: Oh hello! A fellow cat! I’m Tuesday.

MIDNIGHT: Nice to meet you, Tuesday. I’m Midnight.

TUESDAY: I saw you kickin about and was wondering, are we going to be friends or foes?

MIDNIGHT: Well, I’m the Ten News cat, so we should probably be friends. Do you know where Ryan hides the treats?

TUESDAY: I’m thinking we should have a gander at his desk and see what’s poppin off.

RYAN: Pam. You really don’t hear Tuesday and Midnight talking to each other?

<SFX meow from both cats>

PAM: I think they’re saying we need to give Ten News Snaps to one of our listeners…

MIDNIGHT: But before we do, here’s a quick note for the grown ups.

RYAN: THAT’S MY LINE! Time for Ten News Snaps!

PAM: An unnamed Ten’er left us this review on Apple: “I love this podcast! I listen to it every night before I go to bed. Anyways, love the podcast, keep it up Ryan and Pam.”
