TRANSCRIPT:

00:00 RYAN: Pam! It’s a bear! It’s a probe! It’s a… government shutdown?!

PAM: It’s definitely been a unique week. You ready to get down with the get down?

RYAN: Let’s boogie. I’m Ryan Willard.

PAM: I’m Pamela Kirkland. It’s Tuesday, September 26th.

RYAN: This is Ten Things You Need to Know!

RYAN: Today’s Word of the Week is Seasonal! That means items, events, things that are available for a limited time during a particular season, like the yummy seasonal Pumpkin Spice Lattes that we keep talking about (but that Kap surprisingly does not like).

PAM: Well, the holiday season is right around the corner and retailers are gearing up to ensure they are 100% prepared for shoppers this year. Amazon being one of them, is hiring 250,000 workers across full-time, part-time, and seasonal positions throughout the U.S. to help serve customers. While the holiday season is special at Amazon, they ensure their employees are taken care of year-round. Amazon is the leading job creator in the U.S. and plans to invest 1.3 billion dollars to bring the company's average hourly pay to over $20.50 an hour!

RYAN: Time to head to outer space! NASA’s OSIRIS-REx probe is set to arrive back to Earth in Utah on September 24th. The OSIRIS-REx mission launched in 2016 and headed toward Bennu, a 1,650 foot wide, potentially hazardous, near-Earth asteroid. Finally reaching the asteroid in 2018, OSIRIS-REx studied the space rock for nearly two years and collected material from Bennu’s surface for NASA’s Johnson Space Center to curate and store. And, eventually share it with scientists around the world to study for clues about the solar system’s earlier days! You can watch OSIRIS-REx return to Earth at space.com, thanks to NASA TV.

PAM: From space to sports, Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Brusador Graterol always hoped that his mother would get to attend a game and watch him pitch in the major leagues. And, this finally came true. Graterol’s mother arrived from Venezuela to catch her son’s game against the Detroit Tigers where he pitched a scoreless eighth inning for a 3-2 victory! That evening in Dodger Stadium was the first time in 7 years that Graterol and his mother had seen one another, making the win even more spectacular.

PAM: And, for all of those who celebrate, Yom Kippur was on Monday, September 25th! Yom Kippur is a Jewish holiday that serves as the Day of Atonement and follows 10 days after Rosh Hashanah. The holiday is a really special time to celebrate with family and friends. To learn more about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur be sure to tune in to our episode of “Celebrating The Jewish Holidays & Hispanic Heritage Month” where Jewish educator, and Hebrew teacher, Miriam Kanani, explains everything you need to know. Shanah Tova!

RYAN: And, we’ll be right back after this message for the grownups!

RYAN: We’re back with some wild news about a black bear that decided to spend the day at Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Florida! An adult female black bear was spotted in a tree prompting temporary closures in parts of Adventureland, Frontierland, and Liberty Square. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, biologists and law enforcement were able to safely capture the bear, and she is set to be relocated in or around the Ocala National Forest in Marion County, Florida.

04:38 PAM: There’s no question that the bear was probably searching for a Mickey pretzel or a giant turkey leg in preparation for hibernation this winter but there are questions after a F-35 jet went missing in South Carolina. The F-35 stealth fighter jet took off from Joint Base Charleston and was said to have been left in autopilot when the pilot ejected from the aircraft, landing safely in the backyard of a home. The jet was missing for more than 24 hours before the wreckage was found. The investigation is ongoing as they search for answers of whether it experienced mechanical or software failure & why the pilot chose to eject the aircraft.

RYAN: Back on land, Swifties were frustrated this past week when Taylor Swift’s Google puzzles’ system crashed. In the midst of re-recording her old albums with “Taylors Version” she has also created 33 million Google puzzles for fans to solve and reveal the vault track titles! But as fans Google searched ‘Taylor Swift’ and clicked on the blue vault to crack the codes, it jammed. Google immediately went into its fix it-era and fans were able to begin again.

RYAN: We’ve got some BIG news out of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. ‘Tis the season for Dollywood’s Harvest Festival that features different types of pumpkins, even colossal ones that weigh between 400 - 2,000 pounds! There are 27 gigantic pumpkins at the seasonal festival this year and 8 are coming from a family farm in Tazewell County, Virginia after two young boys, Caden & Nolan Edwards, were inspired to grow their own. And, this year the Edwards family delivered their biggest pumpkin named “Godzilla” that weighs a total of 1,048 pounds to Dollywood.

PAM: That sure does sound like a gourd time, but now onto some more serious news. The White House has issued a stark warning as a government shutdown looms. With funding set to expire on September 30th, lawmakers are scrambling to reach an agreement to avoid a shutdown. In a shutdown, the government stops paying its employees, which would leave federal employees like law enforcement, active-duty military, TSA officers, and more working without pay.

RYAN: And, for our last headline of the week, we have some bear-y funny animal news. A momma bear and one of her cubs raided a Krispy Kreme doughnut van that was making a delivery on Joint Base Elemndorf-Richardson in Alaska. The two bears spent about 20 minutes chowing down on doughnut holes and pastries paying no mind to the delivery driver banging on the doors in an effort to shoo them away. After bringing in base security to sound sirens in an effort to scare them away, the bears wandered back into the woods with full bellies. I cannot blame them, I eat like a bear when there’s donuts around.

RYAN: I thought I was done, but I’m actually not. I have a bonus 11th thing you need to know! On Sunday, the Writers Guild of America and the AMPTP, came to a tentative agreement that could potentially end the Writers Strike that has been going on since May 2nd. We’ll have more details in the coming days, but this is great news for the film and television industry. Hopefully this means the Screen Actors Guild and the AMPTP will restart their negotiations soon as well!

RYAN: That was 10 things you need to know!

PAM: Check out tomorrow’s episode where we’ll explore one of Ryan’s greatest fears.

RYAN: Wait. What? My greatest what?

PAM: Don’t worry about it.

RYAN: Pam?? My greatest what?!

PAM: I’m Pamela Kirkland,

07:58 RYAN: And I’m Ryan Willard. Thanks for listening to The Ten News.
