TRANSCRIPT:
00:00 PAM: Good morning, world! Ahhh, Summer break is over, time to go back to workā¦I do love the first day back, I wonder what time Ryan willā¦
RYAN: Youāre late, Pamela.
PAM: AHHHHHHH! Ryan, you scared the cupcakes out of me!
RYAN: Well itās game time, Pamela. It was a craaaaazy Summer, and weāve got a new team member!
PAM: Wait, what?
RYAN: I present to you, CHADIMUS MAXIMUS, THE EDITING GENIUS.
CHAD: Hi Pamela. Umm, you can just call me Chad. Ryan added all that other stuff.
RYAN: He is a genius, though. Listen to what Chad can do to my voice.
PAM: Wow. Heās like a wizard! Great to meet you, Chad! Welcome to the team! Whatās been so crazy about your Summer, Ryan?
RYAN: If you want me to answer that, we gotta start the show.
PAM: Alrighty then. Iām Pamela Kirkland.
RYAN: and Iām Ryan Willard. Nope, donāt like that, Chad. Ahem, thatās better. Itās Thursday, August 31st.
01:21 PAM: Welcome back to the Ten News. Did you know, that according to Nasa scientists, July 2023 was hotter than any other month in the global temperature record?
RYAN: Did you know that itās likely the hottest in about 120,000 years according to Scientific American magazine?
LAINE: Are you two talking temperature right now?!
RYAN: AHHHHH! Laine Farber. Sweet sassafras.
PAM: Hi Laine! We were just talking about how crazy hot this Summer was.
LAINE: You know I love everything about the planetā
RYAN: āNature Nerd Alert!
02:48 LAINE: āso iāve got a lot of insight about the Summer heat waves. And yes, Iām a big Nature Nerd! This summer, countries across the globe experienced extreme weather and record-breaking heat. In a monthās time, over 10,000 heat and rainfall records were set globally. In other words, your mind wasnāt playing tricks on you; it really was THAT hot this summer. But why? Well the answer is really quite simple; the summer scorcher was caused by El Nino, heat domes and human-caused climate change. Confused? I was too when I first started hearing reports on the extreme heat this summer. But Iāve brushed up on my climate science, and Iām here to break down how temperatures have been going up this summer.
Letās start with El Nino. Meaning, little boy in Spanish, El Nino is the name of the naturally occurring, non-predictable climate pattern that shifts the normal flow of warm water and wind in the Pacific Ocean. In early June, the National Weather Service announced that El Nino was present. So whatās the big deal with this little boy? Well, the Pacific Ocean is basically a weather generator and even small changes in wind, water temperature and ocean currents can alter global weather patterns for months. Depending on the strength of El Nino in a given year, these changes can include longer harsher winters, flooding, drought and elevated temperatures.
This summer, El Ninoās shifting winds and warm waters have been helping fuel heat waves, lots and lots of heat waves. {SFX: sizzling noise or person going whew it's hot.} A heat wave is defined as two or more days of elevated temperatures, and all along the equator, countries have been feeling the heat-literally. In the United States a historically large and long heat wave spread from California to Florida and lasted over three weeks! Scientists have a special name for heat waves of this magnitude; theyāre called heat domes.
Heat domes form when atmospheric pressure pushes away clouds allowing in more sunshine and trapping in warm air - sorta like a giant hot bubble or a lid on a pasta pot. And I donāt know about yāall, but it definitely felt as hot as a pot about to boil over down in New Orleans! And unfortunately for Ariel and friends, things were not much ābetter, down where itās wetterā this summer as marine heat waves drove the planetās average sea surface temperature to near record breaking highs. Weāre talking 100 degrees Fahrenheit, friends - thatās bathtub temp. According to U.S. government data, a water temperature buoy in the Everglades National Park, showed a high of 101.9 degrees fahrenheit! Now that is a hot tub.
Climate scientists state that El Nino is partially responsible for the elevated sea temperatures, but not entirely. Ocean temperatures as well as global average temperatures have been slowly increasing since humans began burning fossil fuels in the early 1900ās. There is a lot of concern right now about the impact of these warm temperatures on coral reefs, and NOAA, thatās the National Oceanic Atmospheric Association, is keeping a close eye on what the warmer water means for hurricane season. Hopefully things will cool down a bit before then and we can go back to cool dips in the ocean.
07:01 RYAN: Cool, but not cool, actually. Thank you for breaking that down, Laine! Iām gonna go make a fort by the air conditionerā¦
PAM: Ryan, I like your pink top today, it matches my pink shoes.
RYAN: My Dad always told me, āreal men wear pink!ā And Iāve been wearing this shirt since I saw Barbie.
PAM: Ryan, wasnāt that in Julyā¦?
RYAN: Yup! And the shirt still smells amazing. I also wore it to watch Oppenheimer. Or should I say, Barbieheimer.
PAM: Barbieheimer has been HUGE. It was the nickname given to the release of the Barbie movie happening at the same time as the release of Oppenheimer. Lots of adults did back to back viewings on release day and helped each movie get record earnings.
RYAN: I know a bunch of our Tenāers saw Barbie with their parents or other grown-ups, our friends over at Common Sense Media rated it as good for 11 year olds and older.
09:41 RYAN: Hey Owen do you want to hit up the Trivia Room?
OWEN: Yeah, of course! Dear Tenāers, Iām currently away on a secret mission to explore the world and Iām not sure when or if Iāll returnā¦ I bequeath the Trivia Throne to Owen, in my absence. He may select others to use it as well! I hope you all have a great school year! Cheerio! Sincerely, Tessa.
OWEN: Oh sick.
CHAD: Hey Owen, is this the snack roomā¦?
OWEN: No, butā¦ Welcome to the Trivia Room.
CHAD: Whoa. Iāve never seen an actual throne in real life. Can I sit on it?
OWEN: You sure can, as long as youāre ready to answer todayās Trivia Questionā¦ You ready?
CHAD: I think Iām ready, but I donāt actually know if Iām readyā
OWEN: It was so cool to go to the movies this summer and Barbie dominated the box office . When Barbie was invented in 1959, the creator, Ruth Handler wanted the Barbie doll to have an impact. And it sure has! But do you know what Barbie is named after? Is it:
Ruth Handlerās dog
A doll-obsessed friend
Ruth Handlerās daughter
CHAD: Ooooh, thatās a tough one. A lot of people name things after their dogs.
OWEN: The answer is C! The inventorās daughter. The original Barbie was named after Ruth Handlerās daughter Barbara, and Ken was named after her son Kenneth. The Barbie dollās full name is Barbara Milicent Roberts. Pretty cool name.
OWEN: Tenāers, do you want to join me in the Trivia room and drop some knowledge? Visit The Ten News Dot Com Slash Contact to get in touch, and we might have you on the show!
PAM: Ryanā¦wake upā¦
RYAN: --hey there Barbie let's go partyā oh, hi Pam. Thereās been so much to catch up on this Summer, Iām pretty pooped.
PAM: I know, we still need to wrap up the show.
