RYAN: In case you missed it…in our last episode, we deep dived into some VIDEO GAMES. And I got Everett and Owen a little gift: a copy of Super Mario Party Jamboree and the chance to play it with people who work at Nintendo. Pretty cool, right? I’m Ryan Willard and this is a Ten News Sidequest.

<INTRO MUSIC>

RYAN: Alright, Owen, Everett. You’ve both worked very hard on the show this year, so now it’s time to game with our friends from Nintendo. This is Damian and this is Luna. Feel free to ask them anything about the game. You ready?!

Owen: . So ready.

GAME PLAY STARTS

Everrett: So, tell me, uh, Luna, what do you do at Nintendo, and can I hear a little bit about yourself?

Damiano: Yeah, sure. Um, so, I'm a member of a department at Nintendo called, uh, Treehouse, where we work, uh, pretty closely on the games. Um, and Luna here, she's my, um, colleague and teammate, and, um, She's also on the Treehouse team.

Damiano: And, spoiler alert, she's very good at Super Mario Party Jumpery, so, watch out. But today we're all gonna be playing on the same team, so, um, she's gonna be a powerful ally.

Luna: Yeah. Hi, nice to meet you.

<Game SF X>

Owen: Is your office actually in a treehouse since you work at the treehouse?

Damiano: I think I can confirm that, um, it's a metaphorical treehouse. So, we're not working from an actual tree top. Which would be pretty uncomfortable. Maybe. Also a little cold. [00:01:30]

Ryan: Speak for yourself. I would think you'd be awesome personally. And I've been asking my boss, Tracy Kaplan to build me a tree house and she hasn't done it yet.

Ryan: Well, there's always time, right? That's true. <SFX: Ding>

Owen: What was it like working on Super Mario Party Jamboree? And can you tell us some more about the game?

Damiano: Yeah. So, um, first of all, let me say that I'm very grateful to be able to work on games like Super Mario Party Jamboree. Um, I know you probably think that we play video games all day on Nintendo. Um, which unfortunately is not exactly the case, but we do get to play games. Um, and that's always nice. And. The Tree House team had so much fun playing this game altogether. Um, Luna here is, um, one of the main star Steelers, um mm-hmm. In the tree house. Um, I'm usually the one that gets really bad luck in Mario Party, so, you know, when everybody hits like a six or seven or an eight, I get a two or a one.

Damiano: but . Mm-hmm. He, so for, uh, about Super Mario Party Jambo, um, this is the latest installment in the Mario Party series and yeah. It's, uh, really jam packed with, um, so much content. So, just to give you an example, uh, this one has more than 110 minigames, which is more than any Mario Party game to date. So we can head over to the Hot Air Balloon, and today we're gonna be playing Bowser Kaboom Squad.

Owen: Fun.

Damiano: So you see here we have three different, um, stages. One with Charging Chucks, one with Bomber Bills, and one with Typhoos. I think I'm gonna go with the Charging Chucks one. All right, fine. Just to begin, should we go with an easy Impostor Bowser, or a normal Difficulty Impostor Bowser?

Damiano: Well, why don't we go with easy for our first round, and then we see how it goes. Great. Alright.

Owen: Works for us

Damiano: Where are you? I can help you. Let me get these bombs.

Everrett: The charging

Damiano: shocks, what am I supposed to do? Oh, Impostor Bowser! So

far, I feel like we're doing a great job. We got two attacks against

Damiano: Impostor Bowser in one run, guys. Wow! This is some Great teamwork.

Ryan: Just remember one thing, we're playing with two people from Nintendo and you got me on your team. We're gonna be okay no matter what happens, don't worry.

Damiano: Yeah, we got Luna on our team so, you basically don't need to do anything, she's gonna be winning the game. <twinke SFX or something like that>

Owen: Alright, what's the biggest difference between Super Mario Party Jamboree and other Mario Party games?

Damiano: Well, that's a great question. Um, so first of all Super Mario Party Jamboree is the biggest Mario Party ever. So over 22 playable characters.

Damiano: Um, like other Mario Party games, you can choose a character, roll some dice and compete in a variety of minigames to see who can get the most stars across seven different boards in Mario Party mode. But, uh, What really sets Super Mario Party Jamboree apart is that there's even more jam packed fun, including new online modes, as we were saying, like Copathlon, where up to 20 players compete online to see who can rack up the highest score, and Bowser Kaboom Squad that we're playing right now, which is an eight player co op mode, and that's why we like it, because we can work all together, and now the rhythm is picking up, guys.

Damiano: We're doing amazing for now. Plus, there are also new modes featuring motion controls like Rhythm Kitchen, Toad's Item Factory, Empire Trooper Festival. Those are some

Everrett: of my

Damiano: favorites. I like those too.

Damiano: Woof. I think we did pretty good in this minigame. We got a [00:05:30] rank B. That's not bad.

Everrett: We'll take it, we'll take it.

Everrett: Now about how many characters are in Super Mario Party Jamboree and how do I unlock the two set, the two shaded out characters.

RYAN: I gotta know, how do I unlock the two hidden characters, Ninji and Pauline??

Damiano: Oh, that's a great questionto unlock, uh, [00:06:00] Luigi and Pauline, we actually don't want to spoil the surprise for everyone, um, so we'll let people figure out where they're hiding, but you know, they might be hiding somewhere in plain sight,

and, uh, I'm sure that you're gonna be able to find them.

INSERT - RYAN: PAUSE! <SFX MARIO BROS PAUSE> Ten'ers, no spoiler but, I figured it out, if you want to know how to find Ninji and Pauline, the answer is on our YouTube and Instagram page...  OR there is a link in our show notes to the video spoiler!

<Music Transtion back>

Owen: Does the, do the characters have any effect on the gameplay or are they just aesthetic? For example, my sister likes Rosalina, but she's really tall, so I was wondering if she's any better than like Goomba.

Damiano: That's a great question, and the character you choose, uh, to play as in Super Mario Party Jamboree, um, The short answer is no, they do not affect gameplay.

Damiano: However, I would recommend for you to switch up the characters that you pick. Um, because a little, some little details change based on the item on the character you're playing as, for example, the little jingle that plays at the beginning of each turn in Mario party mode changes based on the character that you're playing as, or, um, for example.

Damiano: The three base reaction stickers that you can use in Mario Party mode are different per character So it's really fun to like see all these little differences And one of my favorite is that their reaction when you win or lose a minigame are different and my favorite one is Luigi I don't know if you saw what he does when he loses a minigame But he throws such a tantrum and cries and he's fully on the floor, which is super cute Wow, you guys are very good at puzzles.

[GAME PLAY]

Damiano: Okay guys, now we need to throw continuous punches at Impostor Bowser to defeat him once and for all.

Everrett: Huh, I never thought I'd see DK with a superstar. It's really cool.

Damiano: Yeah, mash that A button. <SFX: Very loud game play> Nice. Look at the imposter bowser flying.

Ryan: I love how the four of us are all like, mashing the buttons, and Luna's just calm, collected, and somehow the most effective. I don't get this, how this all adds up. I don't get that either, I told you. Thank

Luna: you for noticing. Okay, so we got, we got 3. 5 stars out of 5, guys. That was pretty cool.

Ryan: Is this the first Mario Party game where you work together against something else? Because I feel like every other Mario Party game I've been competing against the people I'm playing with. But this is the first time it feels like I've worked together playing in a Mario Party game.

Damiano: That's definitely one of the nice aspects of Super Mario Party Jamboree. Um, this is not, uh, actually the only cooperative mode in the game. So if you want to take a break from the competition, you can play online Bowser Kaboom Squad, or locally Rhythm Kitchen and Toad's Item Factory are also cooperative, um, and Paratroopa Flight, , The part to promote can also be cooperative.

Damiano: So whenever you want to take a break from the competition, you can always head to one of these modes.

Everrett: Can you talk about the minigames and modes that use motion control? How do you play those?

Damiano: The three motion control only modes, um, Are Rhythm Kitchen, um, Toad's Item Factory, and Paratrooper Flight School.

Damiano: So in Rhythm Kitchen, you can cook to the rhythm using motion controls. In Toad's Item Factory, you and your friends can cooperate to help the Toads build Mario Party items by using motion controls. And in Paratroopa Flight School, um, as I was saying before, it's one of my favorite, and you can use two giant controllers per player to fly in the sky and work with your friend to act as a flying taxi, to carry different characters to their destination, or to compete, um, To see who gets the most parabidibas.

Damiano: And of course there are also motion-controlled minigames that you can enjoy in Mario Party mode if you toggle them on. If you don't like motion controls, you can toggle them off. And in minigame-based mode, where you can play all 110 plus minigames at your leisure. Cool, that's really nice.

Owen: Can you play Super Mario Jamboree in handheld mode as well as on the TV?

Damiano: Yeah, um, you can play Super Mario Party Jamboree in all three modes allowed by the Nintendo Switch system. So you can play in handheld with the controllers attached to the console, um, you can play in tabletop mode.

Damiano: with the console on a table and the Joy-Con controller is detached, or you can also play in TV mode, um, like I'm doing right now on my TV with the console docked and the Joy-Con controller is detached. Of course, if you're playing with motion controls, you will need to be either in TV mode or tabletop mode, because you're gonna be, you know, um, holding your controllers with your hands instead of the system itself.

Damiano: But yeah, all three modes are possible with Super Mario Party Jumbo ry. you guys want to do one more round? If Sure! Yeah?

Damiano: Sure, let's do it.

<GAME SFX>

Damiano: So

Everrett: do you have any tips, tricks, strategies to beat my siblings and friends?

Damiano: first of all, I would say that if you're playing Mario Party, um, definitely make sure to get those items and use them. So if you have coins, definitely, um, get the items. Of course, be sure not to, you know, use all of your coins and then you won't have enough coins to get your star, which is also important.

Damiano: Um, so definitely get and use those items.

Everrett: Do you play like Jamboree at your house? Like maybe with your family?

Damiano: Yeah, I mean, I do like playing Super Mario Party Jamboree. My family, actually, I live pretty far away from my family, but the fact that you can play online, um, really helps, because then I can play both Mario Party mode and the other online modes with them, which is really nice. What about you, Luna? Do you like to play Mario Party, Super Mario Party at home?

Luna: I do. I played plenty with my friends, actually. I haven't tried the online mode yet, but I invited a couple of friends over to play the Mario Party and we had lots of fun.

Damiano: Did you win?

Luna: Of course I did. You don't even have to ask. Come on. Shocker.

{After Luna’s laugh Game over SFX}

Everett: Thank you guys so much. It was really cool playing with you guys and hearing some Nintendo insights from people who work there.

Damiano: Yeah. Thank you for playing with us guys.

Ryan: Uh, honestly, this has been one of the coolest experiences I've ever had as a gamer, uh, before we go Luna, since you're obviously the best of all of us.

Ryan: Do you have any last minute tips on Super Mario Jamboree that I need to know about to beat my sister?

Damiano: Steal the stars. That’s the way.

Ryan: Got it.

RYAN: If Luna says it, then the STARS WILL BE STOLEN. Alright Ten’ers, that concludes our Ten News Sidequest.
