INT. TEN NEWS STUDIO - DAY

<SFX KNOCK KNOCK, Door Opens>

<SFX Game Controller> <SFX video game background>

PAM: Good morning, Ry…

RYAN: Pam, I’m playing through my backlog of Switch games, getting ready for the Switch 2…is this important?

PAM: It is. I’ve got some great news and… some not so great news. <SFX Ryan PAUSES>

RYAN: Oh good gravy. I don’t love this.... Okay, ummm, give me the not so great news first, so the great news makes me feel better afterwards.

PAM: Okay. It was just announced that the Switch 2 pre-orders are pushed back and the price might be increased because of the tariffs–

RYAN: NO! NO PAM! NOOOOOOOOO! The tariffs are coming for me? That’s not fair!

PAM: Hmm, not how they work but we’ll cover that in a bit. The great news is…we won something. And it’s a pretty big deal.

RYAN: IS IT A MINI PONY THAT WILL LIVE IN THE STUDIO?! OR A PUPPY TO HANG WITH OUR KITTENS?!

PAM: Okay, yeah, no. It’s none of those. I could tell you but, we should just jump right into it. I’m Pamela Kirkland.

RYAN: And I’m Ryan Willard. It’s Thursday, April 10th.

PAM: Here are Ten Things You Need to Know.

RYAN: Alright the suspense is driving me bonkers. What did we win?!

PAM: Remember when we announced that The Ten News was nominated as the Best News Podcast by The Ambies!?

RYAN: The Ambies are presented by the Podcast Academy, right?

PAM: Yup, and they celebrate excellence in podcasting, elevating awareness and status of podcasts as a unique and personal medium for entertainment, information, storytelling, and expression.

RYAN: And we were nominated in the Best News Podcast category, against grown up news shows, like the Wall Street Journal, NPR, Vox and bunch of others–

PAM: Well last Monday, at the Ambies, this happened…

<SFX CLIP FROM AMBIES>

<CLIP> RONAN: the winner for Best News Podcast is… the Ten News. <SFX applause>

RYAN: SWEET SPAGHETTI SAUCE! WE BEAT ALL THE GROWNUP PODCASTS?!

PAM: We did! We are SO excited and honored to have won the Best News Podcast award and couldn’t have done this without our amazing Show Creator, Kap, our incredible team, donors and supporters, and, of course, you our Ten’ers.

<SFX Roaring applause>

RYAN: Up next, a record-breaking 24-hour speech. Now, to put that into perspective, 10 Things You Need to Know episodes are ehhh, roughly 15 minutes long. So, according to my calculations, in the span of a 24-hour speech, you could listen to 96 episodes of 10 Things - that’s a lot of news…And, New Jersey Democratic Senator Cory Booker had A LOT to say.

<SFX CLIP FROM BOOKERS SPEECH?>

PAM: Senator Booker gave his marathon of a speech last Monday evening, protesting the actions of President Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Over the span of exactly 25 hours and 4 minutes, Booker spoke about a number of topics like changes to USAID funding, Social Security cuts, the Russia- Ukraine war, and more. Senator Booker never took a break to eat or sit down, only drinking two glasses of water from beginning to end.

RYAN: The previous record was held by Senator Strom Thurmond, who spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes, filibustering the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

PAM: That is a lot of talking. Something else we can’t stop talking about, tariffs! Tariffs are taxes on goods that are brought into a country from another country. Last Wednesday, or ā€œLiberation Dayā€ as President Trump called it, the president proposed implementing ā€œreciprocal tariffsā€ that would match the import taxes that other countries impose on U.S. products. His goal is to boost U.S. manufacturing and level the playing field with other countries that are placing higher tariffs on U.S. imports. But, some economists warn that the tariffs could be hard to structure, all the while potentially driving up costs for consumers and businesses in the United States. It’s more likely that the reciprocal tariffs would mean added costs for businesses, which would then turn into higher consumer prices. The group of nations referred to by the Trump administration as the ā€œDirty 15ā€ are the 15% of countries expected to be hit hardest by the reciprocal tariffs, including China, the European Union, Mexico, Vietnam, and more.

RYAN: And let me just take a moment to tell you all how this affects ME..and possibly you.

RYAN: The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to arrive on June 5th, but because of the Tariffs, Nintendo made this statement: "Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged."

RYAN: So we have to wait to pre-order it and the price of the Switch 2 could be even higher because of the tariffs…Nintendo moved their manufacturing from China to Vietnam a number of years ago, to avoid tariffs from the last Trump administration. Nintendo is not announcing any price changes just yet, as they wait to see how everything unfolds. I DON’T FEEL GOOD ABOUT ANY OF THIS.

PAM: While Ryan deals with his feelings, the Yankees are making big moves in the MLB. <SFX Soccer Ball Kick, then Baseball Bat Crack, then Basketball Net Swish and a Stadium Crowd Roar> The New York Yankees set a team record when they recorded nine home runs in a single game, totaling up to 3,695 feet in distance. But, the big league hitters weren’t using just any old baseball bat. They used torpedo-shaped bats where the wood is moved lower down the barrel and shaped at the end to look kind of like a bowling pin. The torpedo bat was developed by former Yankees front-office staffer Aaron Leanhardt to bring more mass to the baseball bat's sweet spot while enhancing its balance. Players like Cody Bellinger and Anthony Volpe used the bats during their 20-9 win over the Milwaukee Brewers, while other players like Aaron Judge stuck with the traditional bat to stay consistent with his past performances.

RYAN: And over in Tech news… <SFX RYAN: Tcky Tcky, Tech Yourself, Before You Wreck Yourself>

PAM: TikTok lives to see another day in the United States. President Trump announced on Friday that he is signing an executive order to keep the social media app running for another 75 days. This comes after White House officials believed they were nearing a deal where TikTok would be owned and operated by a new U.S.-based company and investors, with ByteDance holding only a minor position in the app. But, due to the recent tariff debacle, ByteDance notified the White House that they would no longer approve the deal until further trade and tariff negotiations are made. Trump’s executive order is the second time that the president has blocked the law that banned TikTok in the U.S. Now, we wait another 75 days to find out the social media giant’s fate! Stay tuned. And now, a quick break!

RYAN: Hey Ten’ers…We’re still very excited that we won the  Ambie for Best News Podcast, so I wanted to share what our creator, Kap said at the awards show when we won! :

<INSERT KAP SPEECH>

PAM: Awesome speech, Kap! Thank you for shouting us all out, and for shouting the Ten’ers out too! And now, back to the show!

RYAN: <SFX Rollout the red carpet! <SFX paparazzi camera> It’s time for some entertaining entertainment news.

RYAN: A Minecraft Movie hit theatres last Friday, but one of America’s favorite fast food chains has been building up to the film's release. McDonald’s is offering Minecraft meals on their menu, including a Big Mac or 10-piece McNugget with a medium fry and soft drink for the grown-ups or the traditional Happy Meal for Ten’ers like you! The grown-up meals come with one of six collectibles inspired by McDonald’s characters and Minecraft elements, including the Big Mac Crystal, Birdie Wings, Fry Helmet, Grimace Egg, Soda Potion, and the Zombie Hamburglar. And for spice lovers, if you order McNuggets, you can get the limited-edition Nether Flame sauce inspired by Minecraft’s ā€œThe Netherā€ dimension. Happy Meals come with one of 12 movie-inspired figurines or ā€œBlock Worldā€ toys plus a scannable code to unlock an exclusive digital game! McDonalds has been crushing it with the gamer collabs this year, we’ve had Mario Kart, Pokemon AND Minecraft? SCRUMDIDDLYUMPTIOUS

PAM: Speaking of movies, Disney has paused the development of its live-action remake of the animated film ā€œTangledā€. The original Tangled was a success and made just under $600 million at the global box office. But, this stall in the live-action development comes after Disney’s live-action Snow White reported only a $145 million earning at the global box office. The film itself cost roughly $270 million to produce. Doc would not like that dollar gap. Although the new Tangled is on pause, there are plenty of live-action remakes set to debut this year, like Disney’s Lilo & Stitch and Moana, that will be put to the test for whether or not movie-goers are fans of live-action remakes of animated classics. What do you think? Do you like the live-action remakes or do like to stick to the classics?

PAM: Okay for 10 points, what animal is this? <SFX OTTER SOUNDS> <SFX three second clock tick> In OTTER news, two North American river otters escaped from the NEW Zoo & Adventure Park in Green Bay, Wisconsin. One of the otters, Ophelia, is back home safe, but her friend Louie remains on the run. Opheila was captured and examined by a veterinarian before returning to her enclosure, but zoo goers may not see the otter as she’s ā€˜always been a bit shy and enjoys tucking into things to take naps throughout the day,ā€ according to the zoo. As for the whereabouts of Louie, it’s unlikely that he’s very far from the zoo because otters are territorial creatures, plus otters are native to the area. The zoo is receiving support in finding him from a tracker, motion-activated cameras, and sightings reported by local residents. We hope that Louie returns home safely, soon!

RYAN: Up next, a 3-year-old discovered an ancient treasure roughly 1,266 times her age. Ziv Nitzan was visiting the archaeological site with her family when she bent over to pick up what she thought would be a regular old rock that turned out to be a small treasure. The family took the stone to the antiquities authority, where it was evaluated by Daphne Ben-Tor, a curator for Egyptian archeology at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. It turns out the small treasure was a scarab amulet that likely originated in the Middle Bronze Age from 2100 - 1600 B.C.E. BCE stands for before common era. These tiny artifacts, shaped like dung beetles, originally came from ancient Egypt and symbolized new life. The scarab and other ancient Egyptian and Canaanite artifacts will be on display at the Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein National Campus for the Archaeology of Israel during Passover. Mannnn. I am constantly searching for treasure and all I seem to find are old pennies.

PAM: You might not have any treasure, Ry, but we’ve got some Trivia. Let’s go to our Trivia Master, Owen.

OWEN: Thanks Pam! In January, an iceberg the size of Chicago broke off from a massive floating glacier attached to the Antarctic Peninsula. Do you know what it’s called when a big chunk of ice breaks off a glacier to become an iceberg?

Is it:

  1. Shedding

  2. Cracking

  3. Calving

  4. Splitting

OWEN: The answer is… Calving! So, in other words, the calving of the glacier produced a Chicago-sized iceberg, which is unbelievable. But, that's not even the coolest part! When the iceberg broke off, it uncovered 209 square miles of seafloor that had never been explored before.

PAM: A team of researchers observed the seafloor for eight days with the help of their remotely operated vehicle named SuBastian. They discovered species like large corals and sponges and other marine life, including giant sea spiders and octopuses!

OWEN: And, based on the size of the animals, they believe the communities have likely lived there for decades, if not hundreds of years. Pretty cool, huh?

RYAN: Not pretty cool, but VERY cool, thanks Owen! And that was Ten Things You Need to Know.

PAM: So Ry, how does it feel to be on an Ambie award winning podcast?

RYAN: It feels like when I played the Switch 2 before anyone else in the world… ABSOLUTELY TREMENDOUS. I really love our show and am so appreciative when we get recognized. How does it feel for you?

PAM: (INSERT YOUR REACTION OR FEELINGS PAM!) I know we don’t do this show JUST to win awards, but gosh it feels good.

RYAN: It’s almost like, the Ambies gave us snaps…Which reminds me, we should give Ten News Snaps–

PAM: But before that, here’s a quick note for the grownups.

<AD BREAK>

RYAN: Time for Ten News Snaps!

PAM: Over on Spotify, Elliot left us a comment that said, ā€œLove it!!!!!! #1 you are the best!!!!! Love the name my cat is named Squeak!ā€ and a Ten’er named Theo said, ā€œThis is awesome!!!!!!!ā€ and left a bunch of heart emojis. Thank you so much Elliot and Theo! Your comments made my day! And Theo, if your mom is named Kate, then extra snaps in your direction!

RYAN: Our Ten’ers are the best. Doing Ten News Snaps is my favorite part, I look at the comments and reviews every day. So keep them coming and we’ll do our best to get to yours!

RYAN: The Ten News creative team is still celebrating their win at the Ambies and includes Tracey Not a Crooks, Adam the Great Bambino Bernard, Brian Not Ryan Douglas and Carson Not So Harry Potter. Big thanks to Owen, Not Slowin Down for Anybody.

RYAN: And I’m Ryan Willard, thanks for listening to the Ten News.
