<SFX Door opens, blowing up balloons>
PAM: Hey Ry-
<Between blowing up balloon>
RYAN: PAM! Thank goodness youāre here. I need your help blowing up these balloons?
PAM: Is that a balloon version of Moanaās raft? And Mauiās magical fish hook? Those are HUGE, where did you find these?
RYAN: I know a guy that knows a gal. I still have to blow up the Pam balloon, the Kap balloon and the Me balloon. Are you gonna help or what?
PAM: Why are we doing this, exactly?
RYAN: I still havenāt been invited to be in the Macyās Thanksgiving Day parade, so Iām starting my own. I just canāt figure out how they inflate those huge ones, I can barely breathe after doing the Midnight the Cat balloon!
PAM: They have machines, Ryan. They use air pumps. You shouldāve asked the guy that knows a gal for one of those.
RYAN: Cool, thatās really great information that I couldāve used YESTERDAY.
PAM: Do you still have some breath left? We gotta start the show!
RYAN: I will always have enough air for that.
PAM: Iām Pamela Kirkland. Today is Thursday, November 21st.
RYAN: And Iām Ryan Willard. This is Ten Things You Need to Know.
PAM: This thanksgiving, thereās more to look forward to than turkey.
RYAN: Of course there is! Thereās also
PAM AND RYAN SPEAK AT THE SAME TIME
PAM: Family and friends
RYAN: Turducken and pumpkin pie!
PAM: Additionally, Disney is continuing the tradition of releasing a new animated movie around this time. This year, itās Moana 2 on November 27th! The first film came out in 2016 and was a major hit, playing in thousands of theaters, bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars, and giving us a ton of songs to sing along to together. <SFX āWhat can I say except, youāre welcome?> If youāre excited for the release, youāre not the only one! One trailer actually broke a record for most views for a Disney animated film. And itās no wonder everyoneās pumped, since it looks like we can expect new songs, new characters, and new mythical additions rooted in Polynesian culture. I even heard thereās going to be -
RYAN: - LALALALALALA SH! No spoilers! I donāt want to spoil this big deal.
PAM: Speaking of big deals, you know what November 23rd is?
RYAN: YEAH! Itās National Adoption Day, National Espresso Day, Eat a Cranberry Day, Aura Awareness Dayā
PAM: True, but November 23rd is ALSOā¦ Fibonacci day!
RYAN: WHAT! FIBONACCI DAY! What is that, exactly?
PAM: The Fibonacci sequence is when each number is the sum of the two numbers that come before it. So it goes 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13ā¦ it can be hard to think about, but try writing it down! Can you find the next numbers after 13? <SFX clock tick> Awesome! The correct answer is: 21 and then 34! So November 23rd is Fibonacci Day because the date is 11/23, the first four numbers in the sequence: 1, 1, 2 and 3. Aside from being fun to figure out, the Fibonacci sequence is also found in everyday life. When you map out those Fibonacci numbers on a graph, it makes a spiral, and this shape is in pinecones, cauliflower, and pineapple. RYAN: Hmm, now Iām hungry, but letās move on to more serious news. Recent satellite images have revealed that record-breaking levels of smog over Pakistan and India are so thick that they can actually be seen from space. Every winter, thereās an increase in pollution because of a combination of farmers burning agricultural waste, power plants burning coal, traffic, and a lack of wind. Since cold, dry air traps pollution, the smog gets stuck. The smog is a health concern to tens of millions of people, resulting in closed schools and public spaces. Between outdoor activity bans and curfews, the government is doing what they can to protect people from the smog thatās already there, and theyāre working on a plan to figure out a longer-term solution.
PAM: We can see this smog from space, but ever think about what can be sent from out there to earth? Itās time to get Out. Of. This. World. <SFX NASA 3-2-1 Blastoff> OR <SFX lightspeed jump>. Last year, an extra cool extraterrestrial project was set into motion when the SETI Institute, a nonprofit focused on the search for life beyond Earth, simulated a signal from outer space.
RYAN: Last year? So why are we talking about this now?
PAM: Because after a year of people all over the world trying to figure out this message, itās finally been deciphered by a father-daughter team! Ken and Keli Chaffin spent thousands of hours experimenting with the message and running simulations before finally cracking it. But! Just because they deciphered the message doesnāt mean they understand it. Thanks to the Chaffins, we know that the message, containing white pixel clusters on a black background represents amino acids. Now, the next step is to figure out the meaning.
RYAN: Amino acids? I know from my science class those are the building blocks of life. Hmm. Building blocks. Does the message mean weāre supposed to play with more Lego bricks? Or play more Jenga? Should I make another marshmallow tower?!
PAM: Okay this could be a while. On the topic of space, why donāt you tell them about the annual Leonid meteor shower?
RYAN: Whoās Leonid and why is it okay if he takes a shower once a year? But when I do it Iām āgrossā and āsmell like a skunk fartsā according to my sister.
PAM: Leonids are meteors, silly! Theyāre bright, colorful, and super fast. Iām talking 44 miles per second fast.
RYAN: Iāve heard about this shower! It happens every year around the month of November, but this year was something special. Every once in a while the Leonids make for a particularly spectacular show with thousands of meteors per hour. This is usually about every 33 years when the parent comet, Tempel-Tuttle, makes an orbit around the sun and it gets fresh material every time it approaches the sun.
PAM: Exactly! Weāll come back to Earth in a minute Tenāners, but first, a quick break. RYAN: Were you born last century? Then this message is for you. Hello, grownups. Giving Tuesday is coming up on December 3rd and we need your help. If you didnāt know, the Ten News is listener supported and your funding helps make this show happen. If youād be so kind, please consider making a tax-deductible donation, so we can keep making more episodes! The link is in our show notes and on thetennews.com. Speaking ofā¦back to the show.
PAM: Welcome back, Tenāners! Weāre just a couple weeks post-election but it looks like the U.S. is in for some big changes in government. Former president Donald Trump became president elect Donald Trump, making history as the first president to leave office and then return. As of this episode, there are still a few races left to be called for the House of Representatives, including Alaska, and some in California, Iowa, and Ohio. But itās projected that Republicans will maintain narrow control of the Housel. Republicans also gained control of the Senate, with a 52 seat majority.
RYAN: Some things are still a little up in the air when it comes to staffing the White House, but hereās a sure thing: President-elect Donald Trump dropped his announcement for his White House chief of staff, and itās
<SFX drumroll>
Susan Summerall Wiles. You may not have heard of her, since sheās known to work mostly behind the scenes instead of making public appearances, but Trump says sheās ātough, smart, [and] innovativeā Wiles was his campaign manager, and is now the first-ever female chief of staff in US history.
As chief of staff, her job is to be the right hand to the president. Sheāll serve as the manager of the White House and have the responsibility of putting together Trumpās staff. Sheāll oversee daily operations and staff activities, advise Trump on policy issues, and will be responsible for directing policy development.
RYAN: Can we head back to space for a minute? A team of astronomers have just discovered a supermassive black hole in the middle of the galaxy, and itās consuming matter at ludicrous speed.
<SFX SPACEBALLS LUDICROUS SPEED GO!>
In fact, itās chowing down on matter at over 40 times the theoretical limit! It might not seem very young, but this black hole known as LID-568 was discovered just 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang, and its incredible speed could help explain how supermassive black holes grew so quickly early on in the universe. Studying LID-568 suggests that āa significant portion of mass growth can occur during a single episode of rapid feeding.ā So eat your vegetables, Tenāners!
PAM: Astronomy is great, but how about a different kind of star - basketball stars, to be exact. <SFX Soccer Ball Kick, then Baseball Bat Crack, then Basketball Net Swish and a Stadium Crowd Roar>. The NBA has looked a little different because of an unusual absence of their star players. This includes Philadelphia 76ersā Tyrese Maxey, New Orleans Pelicansā Zion Williamson, Memphis Grizzliesā J a Morant, Phoenix Sunsā Kevin Durant, and Oklahoma City Thundersā Chet Holmgren. All of them have been sidelined for what looks like weeks! A ton of big-name players have already missed games, and are set to miss more, due to injuries like strains and fractures to playersā hips, knees, hamstrings, and calves. Thatās a huge bummer, but of course, safety is the most important. No matter what team you root for, weāre rooting for a recovery for all players!
RYAN: If youāre sidelined from physical games, thereās no reason you canāt play brain games - letās go to Owen for Trivia!
<SFX Trivia Theme song>OWEN: With Thanksgiving just a week away, millions are getting excited to watch the Macyās Thanksgiving Parade! Which of the following used to be a real part of the Macyās Thanksgiving Parade?
Balloon rodeo, where people could ride the giant balloons
Balloon race, where people would race to catch the balloons after they were released post-parade
Balloon design contest, where people could send in their drawings to be made into balloons.
<SFX 5 second clock tick>
OWEN: Alright Tenāers, did you guess it? The answer is B, balloon race! Back in the 1920s and 30s, after the parade, the balloon handlers would just let the balloons float away after the parade.
RYAN: They included a return address on the balloons, so people could race to find these free-floating balloons. From 1928 to 32, a returned balloon would earn you a $100 reward. $100 back then is worth about $2300 now.
OWEN: But nowadays, youāll have to earn your money in a different way because in 1932, there was an accident that stopped the balloon race.
RYAN: An aviation student saw a giant floating tom-cat balloon but didnāt avoid it in time! The cat got caught on the plane, and the instructor had to take control to save the situation.
OWEN: Everybody was safe, but it did put an end to giant floating balloons in the sky, especially a tom-cat. Ryan? You okay? You look distracted.
RYAN: I just realized I should probably cancel the Midnight the Cat balloon chase that I had scheduledā¦
PAM: And thatās Ten Things You Need to Know!
RYAN: I know Iām early on this, but spoiler alert - I am thankful forā¦ that show we just did. Also the show before that one. And the one before that one. And the one before -
PAM: Iām thankful, too! You know what else Iām thankful for?
RYAN: Waffles? With whipped cream and strawberries on them?
PAM: The Tenāers, silly! Thatās why weāve gotta give them Ten News Snaps!
RYAN: Thatās a great idea! But first, a quick note for the grownups.
[Ad Break]
RYAN:Time for Ten News Snaps! <Grand fanfare SFX>
PAM: A Tenāer named Louisville Genevieve left us this review on Apple podcasts: āButterflies are the best. Donāt be afraid of butterflies, Ryan.ā And then Louisville Genevieve left 88 butterfly emojis.
RYAN: BLEAH! Why?! Why does she think butterflies are the best and why shouldnāt I be afraid of them? I donāt get it!
PAM: And a Tenāer named Sierra said, L. LO. LOV. LOVE.
RYAN: See, that I can get behind. I L-O-V-E that one. Thank you Sierra for leaving a lovely review that was butterfly free.
PAM: And FYI If you want some bonus content, you could join the Tenāers Club on our website. And to our grownups, if you want to help support the Ten News, you can make a tax-deductible donation at the link in our show notes. The whole team thanks you for your support!
