<SFX Door opens>

KAP: Hello, Ryan.

RYAN: Hey Kap, you’re here early…is Pam still on vacation?

KAP: Yup. Did you hear that kid takeover on Tuesday? It was really good.

RYAN: It WAS really good! Almost TOO good.

TRACY: Tupelo and Everett are great hosts.

RYAN: WAIT. You’re not, replacing me with Tupelo or Everett…are you?

KAP: We’ll see how well you can do without Pam here, keeping you in check…

RYAN: Well then, it’s time to start the show! I’m Ryan Willard. It’s Thursday, November 7th.

TRACY: And I’m Tracy Leeds Kaplan. This is Ten Things You Need to Know.

ELECTION UPDATE
TRACY: Last week was Halloween, but did you know that it was also the start of another really important holiday? It was the start of Diwali, a Hindu festival celebrated by millions of people around the world including followers of the Jain religion and Sikh religion.  The holiday’s name is from the Sanskrit word “Deepavali,” meaning “row of lights” and the holiday is also known as the Festival of Lights. There are different interpretations of the story behind the holiday, but the common theme is the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. The holiday lasts 5 days and each day has special significance. For more on Diwali and how different families’ celebrate it, check out our episode from last year linked in the show notes!

RYAN: I love it when I get two holidays at once!

And this Monday, there is another one - Veteran’s Day is on Monday, November 11th. November 11th is the anniversary of the end of World War I, and Veteran’s Day is a special day to honor the veteran’s of America’s wars. Ceremonies take place across the U.S. including a special moment at the Arlington National Cemetery, where the president lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The tomb is a symbol of all the soldiers who’ve been lost and not returned to their families. However you celebrate, the day is about showing support and appreciation for veterans, which you can do even if there aren’t any parades or events in your area. A thank you for your service is a great thing to say to any veterans in your life.

TRACY: Ryan, do you ever find something that you’re not even looking for?

RYAN: All the time! I found a half eaten pizza under my bed. It was still warm.

TRACY: Well, a PhD student found a lost city completely by accident!

RYAN: Okay but did that lost city have pepperoni AND extra sauce?!

TRACY: Not quite. Luke Alud-Thomas, an archaeology student at Tulane University, was searching the internet when he came across a laser survey on the 16th page of his Google Search results. That survey, called a lidar survey is a technique that can help us visualize structures beneath vegetation., and in it he found an ancient Mexican city that other’s had missed!

RYAN: What?! Ten’ners, see what happens when you do your homework?! You might find an ancient city!

TRACY: The city, now named Valeriana by researchers may have been home to as many as 50,000 people at its peak, from about 750 to 850 AD. The city was a little over 6 square miles, with two major centers linked by houses and roads. There were also two plazas with pyramids where people would have worshiped, hidden treasure, and buried their dead. And if that’s not enough, it also had a court where people would have played an ancient ball game!

RYAN: So maybe pickleball is older than I thought! Now onto some cheesy news…a man has been arrested for the theft of more than 22 tons of artisanal cheese! The suspect in question is a 63 year old who posed as a distributor for a big French retailer, and went to Neal’s Yard Dairy in London for a monster-sized order. The famous dairy company specializes in artisan cheddars, and was thrilled at the thought of selling so much cheese! The conman ordered almost 1,000 wheels of high-quality cheddar, coming to almost 50,000 pounds of cheese. Alas, the cheese was produced and delivered, but Neal’s Yard Dairy never saw the money they were supposed to get, which was hundreds of thousands of dollars. Although the suspect has been arrested, the whereabouts of the cheeses are still unknown.

TRACY: Ryan, I saw a giant block of cheese in your kitchen the other day…

RYAN: Umm, not sure what you are talking about. You know what, I think it’s time for a quick break.

RYAN: Hey Ten’ers! I’m working on a video game deep dive and want to hear from you… what are your favorite games on the Nintendo Switch, and WHY? Leave us a review or a comment on Apple or Spotify, or drop us an email at hello@thetennews.com. And if you do, Kap will let me play more video games. Back to the show!

TRACY: Cheesecloth, a common and inexpensive kitchen tool, could have a whole new use - helping koalas! Last month, the Journal of Applied Ecology talked about a new data collection method where they could take DNA from an area to see if the cute marsupials were living there. The scientists set up filters made of cheesecloth and after a few days they then analyzed the filters to see if there was any koala DNA. They were excited to find out that there was! This was an important find because Australia's koala population has dropped recently, and other conservation efforts have relied on complicated and costly instruments to detect koalas. This new method is less expensive and helps monitor koalas without needing to disturb the animals, or their habitat!

RYAN: That’s great news out of Australia!

In non-election presidential news, President Biden formally apologized on behalf of the country, to the nation’s Indigenous communities for the federal government’s native american boarding schools. For over 150 years, the U.S. government ran more than 400 schools that separated tens of thousands of American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian children from their parents to assimilate them, meaning stripping them of their own culture and having them follow the white culture where they lived. In these schools, conditions were harsh, dangerous, and unacceptable, and most Americans don’t even know about the country’s involvement in these. President Biden talked about how it's important to acknowledge both the good and bad parts of U.S. history, as part of his apology. Additionally, the president has signed legislation to invest more than $45 billion in tribal nations, focusing particularly on infrastructure and health systems on reservations.

TRACY: Let’s head to space for this next story. <SFX NASA 3-2-1 Blastoff> OR <SFX lightspeed jump> A crew of Astronauts have returned to earth after an unexpected 8 months aboard the International Space Station! The four person crew is made up of three NASA astronauts: commander Matthew Dominick, pilot Michael Barratt, and mission specialist Jeanette Epps, as well as cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin from Russia's space agency. They went to space on the Falcon 9 in March, and have been researching things like the shift of body fluids during spaceflight, and the effect of UV radiation and weightlessness on plant growth. The crew was supposed to come home in August and ended up breaking a record by accident by spending 235 days in space. Their return home was delayed because of problems with test flights, and unsafe weather caused by the recent hurricanes. Two other astronauts from a different mission, Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, are still waiting to come home in February of next year.

RYAN: Oh I hope they have some video games to play because it’s time for GG’S. <SFX Super Mario theme song> OR <SFX PS5 Startup Sound> OR <SFX XBOX Startup Sound> OR <SFX 3x Mario coins>  Best known for CREATING the Super Smash Bros. series, Masahiro Sakurai, took a break about 2 years ago to work on a YouTube channel to educate fans and players about how games are made. And he did it for FREE, to inspire the next generation of game creators. Sakurai released 260 videos, more than 19 hours of content, and has racked up over 80 million views. The channel’s final video held some big surprises. First, the content was almost all made at the beginning, filmed years ago, and not filmed weekly or monthly like people thought. The second surprise was that Sakurai had been working on a new project when the channel first started…which means, that the creator of Super Smash Bros.’s next project might be announced soon…I’m already hyped and I don’t know what it is. ALSO, Nintendo just released Nintendo Music which is a new app available to Nintendo Online subscribers. The music app brings nearly 40 years of Nintendo soundtracks to your smart device, featuring everything from Super Mario Bros. to Splatoon 3 and Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild.

TRACY: Sounds like you’ll be listening to a lot of music now.

RYAN: You bet, right after we visit Owen for some Trivia.

<SFX Trivia Theme song>

OWEN: Now with the baseball season over, I’m starting to pay attention to basketball. The University of Florida’s newest freshman, Olivier Rioux, is making history and already holds a record. Which record does Olivier hold?

  1. By being the tallest teenager in the world

  2. By getting the most 3-pointers in a game, OR

  3. By playing the most minutes in a season

<SFX 5 second clock tick>

OWEN: Alright Ten’ers, did you guess it? The answer is A! The Canadian, Olivier Rioux, is in the Guinness record book as the world’s tallest teenager at 7 foot 9 inches tall.

RYAN: Gheorghe Muresan and Manute Bol are the tallest people to ever play in the NBA, and they were a whopping 7-foot-7. With the Florida Gators, he’ll make history as the tallest to play college basketball, passing UNC Asheville’s 7-foot-7 Kenny George by 2 inches.

OWEN: Oliver has always known he’s something special. He was taller than most of his teachers in elementary school, was over 6-foot by age 8, and over 7 feet the summer before seventh grade. But he’s not alone. His mom is 6-2, his dad is 6-8, and his older brother is 6-9.

RYAN: My head hurts…

OWEN: I know, it’s a lot of numbers.

RYAN: No, I’m just thinking about how much I’d hit my head if I was that tall!

OWEN: Ouch! But Oliver has got this down to a science. He has a lot of custom-made items to make life more comfortable, including his bed. He probably has to look really hard for his size 20 shoe BUT he can dunk without leaving his feet and has a nearly unstoppable hook shot.

RYAN: Talk about a big man on campus!

TRACY: And that is Ten Things You Need to Know!

RYAN: Alright Kap, how’d I do? You’re not replacing me with Too Good Tupelo or Extravagant Everett. Right?

KAP: I certainly couldn’t replace you if you washed my car for me.

RYAN: Yeah I can do that! I got a hose and a bucket in my office, I’ll do it right now!

TRACY: Wait, why do you have a hose in your office…?

RYAN: For the water fight… that I’m definitely NOT having…inside the office…Should we give some Ten News Snaps?

TRACY: Definitely, but first, here’s a quick note for the grownups.

[Ad Break]

RYAN:Time for Ten News Snaps! <Grand fanfare SFX>

TRACY: A Ten’er named Lee Academy left us this review on Apple Podcasts, “I like the podcast, but your challenge is to get a laugh a minute.” Wow, that’s a tough challenge–

RYAN: Challenge accepted! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. <SFX laughing> Okay that was more than 10 laughs in under a minute. I win again, Lee Academy. FYI, Ten Things You Need to Know drops on Thursdays, and our deep dive episodes drop once a month. If you want some bonus content, you could join the Ten’ers Club on our website. And to our grownups, if you want to help support the Ten News, you can make a tax-deductible donation at the link in our show notes. The whole team thanks you for your support!

TRACY: “The Ten News” is a co-production of Small But Mighty Media and Next Chapter Podcasts, and part of the Airwave Podcast Network.

RYAN:The Ten News creative team is hugging koalas and includes Tracey Crooks, Adam the Great Bambino Bernard, Kyle Murdock, Hebba Gouda and Carson Potter. Big thanks to Owen for contributing to this episode.

TRACY: Our Production Director is Jeremiah Tittle, and our Executive Producers are Donald Albright and show creator Tracy Leeds Kaplan. That’s me! I’m Tracy Leeds Kaplan!

RYAN: And I’m Ryan Willard, thanks for listening to the Ten News.
