INT. TEN NEWS STUDIO

<SFX Pamela tip toes in as we hear Ryan>

RYAN: Okay, gotta stay, just gotta be cool, itā€™s no big deal! Iā€™m gonna be fineā€“

PAM: (SCARING RYAN) HAPPY FRIDAY THE 13TH!!!

RYAN: AHHHHHHHHHH! You scared the cookie crumbs outta my mouth hole.

PAM: Why are you hiding under a blanket?

RYAN: This is a bad luck-proof blanket, because tomorrow is a very unlucky and freaky, freaky Fridayā€“

PAM: Okay, well thatā€™s tomorrow, and today, we gotta start the show. Iā€™m Pamela Kirkland.

RYAN: And Iā€™m Ryan Willard, itā€™s Thursday, September 12th.

PAM: This is Ten Things You Need to Know.

RYAN: Freaky Friday the 13th is tomorrow and Halloween is less than two months away, and the popular costume store, Spirit Halloween, is wasting no time. The company announced that this year, it plans to open a record number of locations across the U.S. and Canada  - a whopping 1,525 locations! That means that there will be 1,525 locations to get costumes, decorations, candy, wigs, candy, caaaandy - uh, what were we talking about?

PAM: Spirit Halloween?

RYAN: RIGHT! As of late August, over 1,100 locations had already been opened, and the rest should be here by the end of September. Until then, Pamela, can you take the next story? I have to do some really important research. <mumbling while typing> Whereā€¦toā€¦buyā€¦giantā€¦bagsā€¦ofā€¦candyā€¦

PAM: Well, Ryan, as excited as I am, too, about Spirit Halloween, there are way scarier things out there than costumes and Friday the 13th.

PAM: Letā€™s now talk about some positive environmental news!

RYAN: This should put you in a pretty good  ā€œmoooooooooooood,ā€ because Iā€™m talkinā€™ about cows. Genetically engineered cows, to be specific. Canadian dairy farmer Ben Loewithā€™s calves are expected to be born next spring, and would be among the first to be bred with the goal of burping less methane. Cow burps are a huge source of greenhouse gasses, and the low-methane trait could reduce emissions from Canadaā€™s dairy herd by 1.5% annually, which could mean that 2050 could see a 20%-30% decrease! If you think about it, these cows are gonna help save the world.

PAM: Environmental issues are a hot topic, which brings me to our next story: the debate between former President Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. On Tuesday, the presidential candidates went head to head just weeks before the November 5th in a debate hosted by ABC News. This was the first, and very well could be the only, time that the two ever actually debate!

RYAN: Thatā€™s right, Pam. With the election less than two months away, this is not only the first time the two have faced off in a debate, but itā€™s also the first time theyā€™ve ever met in person!

PAM: Harris entered the game pretty late, since Bidenā€™s decision to step down from the race happened in mid-July. This means sheā€™s had only a fraction of the time that Trump has to rally support and establish her platforms, something thatā€™s normally done over months and months. The debate gave them both the opportunity to answer questions, appeal to voters, and make a case for themselves in advance of the big day.

RYAN: Another reason people have been watching a little more TV lately, the NFL season opener! <SFX Soccer Ball Kick, then Baseball Bat Crack, then Basketball Net Swish and a Stadium Crowd Roar> Thatā€™s right, the 2024 season is officially underway! Last Thursday, September 5th, they kicked off the first game of the season with a game between the Baltimore Ravens and Taylor Swiftā€™s boyfriendā€™s team!

PAM: The Kansas City Chiefs?

RYAN: Yeah, I guess thatā€™s what theyā€™re technically called.  That first game ended in a win for The Chiefs with a score of 27-20, but this was the first game in a whole series that would lead up to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. The Chiefs are going for a third straight year of winning, but who knows what could happen!

PAM: Wow, Iā€™m excited for the rest of the season. I love seeing everyone rep team spirit.

RYAN: The mayor of France may have everyone beat on team spiritā€¦

PAM: Oh, you must be talking about -
RYAN: - yup, what weā€™re going to tell the Tenā€™ers right after the break!

RYAN: Hey Tenā€™ers, I canā€™t be the only one a little freaked out by Friday the 13thā€¦ Here are two crazy weather things that happened on Friday the 13th

  • On Friday, July 13, 1951, Kansas had a crazy storm and had over 25 inches of rain. The cities of Manhattan, Lawrence, and Topeka were most affected, and over 2 million acres of land were damaged by the flood.

  • Friday, October 13th, 2006, almost half a million people lost power in Buffalo, New York, and the surrounding suburbs when they were hit with 22-24 inches of snow. Snow happens in New York but in October?! Cā€™mon.

RYAN: All Iā€™m saying is, that things can get a little freaky on Friday the 13th! Iā€™ll be watching the skies tomorrow! Okay, back to the show.

PAM: Tenā€™ers, we had so much fun watching the Olympics, so itā€™s no wonder that France is really proud of hosting. Like, really proud. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo actually wants to keep the Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower after the games are over! These rings were installed on the Eiffel Tower before the opening ceremony in July, and theyā€™re huge! Weā€™re talking almost 100 feet wide, 50 feet high, and they weigh 30 tonnes. Thatā€™s about 66,138 pounds!

RYAN: What?! Thatā€™s SO heavy! No wonder they donā€™t want to move them, talk about throwing your back out!

PAM: Ms. Hidalgo wants to keep them up because ā€œthe French have fallen in love with Paris again,ā€ and she wanted ā€œthis festive spirit to remain.ā€ Paris residents have mixed feelings about it - some say the beautiful rings add color, while others say the historic monument should be left alone. One thing Iā€™m sure about is that Ryan will NOT be helping move those.

RYAN: You are right about that. Now, we have to come back to the U.S. and talk about something sad that happened last Friday. In Apalachee High School in Georgia, a 14-year-old killed four people, two students, and two teachers, with a gun that he brought to school. An additional nine people were injured, they will make a full recovery. The shooter was arrested and his father has been arrested. The father is accused of giving his son a gun even after his son had made threats to hurt others. It is a new step by law enforcement and only the second time that a parent has been arrested for the actions of his or her child in a case like this. Many people are showing their support for the town of Apalachee. The Altanta Falcons wore Alplacheee t-shirts during their warm-ups in last Sundayā€™s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and President Biden called on Congress to pass new gun control measures to help keep schools safe.

PAM: I think itā€™s time for a very cool Paralympics story. Paralympian Hunter Woodhall has taken home the gold medal for Team USA! You may have first seen Hunter in the stands during the Olympics when he cheered on his wife, Olympian and gold medal winner herself, Tara Davis-Woodhall. This time it was his turn to stand on the podium by winning the 400-meter T62 race. Congratulations to the gold medal couple!

PAM: We all know that mistakes happen and a big one happened to a four-year-old boy during a museum visit. He accidentally smashed a 3,500-year-old jar. The artifact was at the Hecht Museum in Israel and was from The Bronze Age between 2200 and 1500 BC. It was super rare for something to be so old and still in one piece, and it was on display near the museum entrance without being behind any glass. Thankfully, the museum was really understanding of the circumstances. The boy just wanted to take a closer look at a really cool piece of history! A specialist has been appointed to restore the jar and will be returned to its spot shortly. The boy has been invited back to exhibit but he may want to keep his hands in his pockets!

RYAN: Iā€™m not going to be visiting a museum anytime soon because I have some big gaming to do! <SFX Super Mario theme song> OR <SFX PS5 Startup Sound> OR <SFX XBOX Startup Sound> OR <SFX 3x Mario coins> Playstation is having a BIG month: their brand new platformer Astro Bot was just released and currently has a 94 meta critic rating, which makes it one of the highest rated games of 2024. Astro Bot is a continuation of the wildly popular free game, Astroā€™s Playroom, which came with the PS5 that was used to showcase the PS5ā€™s new features. I tested Astro Bot this weekend and I have to say, itā€™s one of the best platformers Iā€™ve played in a long time. And if you are a Playstation fan, there is a TON of nostalgia that feels like youā€™re playing in a Playstation Museum.  And if thatā€™s not enough, if youā€™re a PSPlus subscriber, the three free games this month include Little Nightmares 2, MLB the Show 24, and Harry Potterā€™s Quidditch Champions. Thatā€™s a lot of GGā€™s.

PAM:  Keeping the playful spirit going for the last thing you need to know, letā€™s kick it to Owen for some Triviaā€¦

<SFX Trivia Theme song>

OWEN: Ryanā€™s obviously a little scared of Friday the 13thā€¦but whatā€™s the word for a fear of Friday the 13th? Is itā€¦

  1. Friggatriskaidekaphobia

  2. FreakyFridayphobia

  3. StickaFinkaDipaphobia

<SFX 5 second clock tick>

OWEN: Alright Tenā€™ers, did you guess it? The answer is A, friggatriskaidekaphobia!

RYAN: It might sound like a whacky word, but if we break down ā€œfriggatriskaidekaphobia,ā€ it makes sense! Friday is named after the Norse goddess of wisdom, named Frigg. ā€œTriskaideaā€ is a Greek word for 13, and phobia means fear. Friggatriskaidekaphobia!

RYAN: But thereā€™s another word for this fear thatā€™s WAY easier to say. Paraskevidekatriaphobia! Alright, so not easier, but just as fun, and itā€™s another with Greek roots where paraskevĆ translates as Friday, and dekatria is another way of saying thirteen.

PAM: And that was Ten Things You Need to Know.

RYAN: Great show today, Pam! I canā€™t believe we did the whole thing in the dark.

PAM: We didnā€™t do it in the dark, you just, never came out from under your lucky blanket.

RYAN: And I wonā€™t, until, Saturday the 14th. (whispers) will you please bring me some snacks.

PAM: Of I will. And in the meantime, we should give Ten News Snaps to one of our listeners!

RYAN: But before we do, hereā€™s a quick note for the grownups.

[Ad Break]

RYAN: Time for Ten News Snaps! <Grand fanfare SFX>

PAM: A Tenā€™er named Kid 678 said, ā€œI love this podcast, I listen to it every night, keep making more.ā€ And then added two smiley faces and four butterfly emojis.

RYAN: That is awesome, Kid 678, thank you but also no thank you for those you know whatsā€¦

PAM: And a Tenā€™er named Ben, aka A Gamer1578 said, ā€œFor National Read a Book Day I recommend Grenade by Alan Gratz.ā€

RYAN: Cool recommendation, thank you Ben, and if you didnā€™t know, I am also A Gamer. And FYI, Ten Things You Need to Know drops on Thursdays, and our deep dive episodes drop once a month. If you want some bonus content, you could join the Tenā€™ers Club on our website. RYAN: And Iā€™m Ryan Willard, thanks for listening to the Ten News
